Verizon to offer 'up to' five LTE handsets by next May, Android tablets from HTC and friends
Verizon had already said that it anticipated launching its first LTE handsets in the first half of 2011, but as we're rounding third base toward the launch of Big Red's first commercial 4G markets, it's shedding a little more light on how it thinks this'll all go down. Basically, wireless chief Lowell McAdam says we can expect "up to" five handsets by May of 2011, exactly a year from now -- which could mean anywhere between zero and five, as far as we're concerned -- and that Motorola, LG, HTC, and RIM are all in the running to serve up that first volley of hardware. What's not clear is whether these will make voice calls over CDMA exclusively (a la EVO 4G) or if they'll be compliant with the IMS-based (and GSMA-friendly) voice the company expects to eventually roll out on top of its LTE network, but either way, it's good news.
Turning our attention to Verizon's recent tablet hullabaloo, McAdam says that although "there's no reason [the company] couldn't have an iPad," the first tablets it offers will be Android-based -- yes, "tablets" plural -- and that most of them will launch in the fourth from companies "including Motorola, Samsung and LG." Interestingly, this dovetails rather conveniently with an NVIDIA-powered Motorola tablet with Verizon branding that was briefly (and quietly) shown off at CES this January, so we wouldn't be surprised if that was the unit we ended up getting. None of these devices might end up with the iPad's name recognition, obviously, but an LTE-powered Android tablet with HTC's good design sense certainly can't hurt.

Well I am sure that reoccurring cost of this tablet and the data plan for your phone will catch up with you... VZW r a p e s its customers.
In the hood, we would say "Verizon is eating AT&T's food"! At&t you need to step your game up! I do not have 3g anywhere in NYC wtf!!! At my college everybody has service (verizon) except me..
All these devices Verizon is coming out with. Hmmmm, sounds like vaporware to me. Not to mention, they will figure out how to disable features in phones, and charge 50% more to use what they leave in.
Nothing says "wish in one hand - shit in the other" than telling people something you plan on doing in the next year. If they did it and had the hardware I wanted, I'd be on it like flies on poo in a hog-pen.
Wont the fact android is a smartphone OS always hinder their development as a tablet OS, Google needs two different branches, one for Tablets and one for smartphones.
P.S. Does down ranking even work? I find myself always clicking to see what comments nobody likes.
@Mexicutioner45
ChromeOS was supposed to be their tablet OS, but it's obviously not done yet. I don't think adopting a smartphone OS is too bad, although there definitely will be adjustments to be made (one is resolution, since Android is limited to 854x480 right now, which may be a bit small for some of the larger tablets). The iPhoneOS is a phone OS and it was adapted to the iPad fairly well.
@Mexicutioner45
p.s. does your display name mean you are racist towards mexicans or does it mean that you are one bad ass mexican?
either way peace my friend
@LOVEISPEACE2012EVOLUTION
Badass mexican, who might be a little self loathing.
@LOVEISPEACE2012EVOLUTION I bet you dollars to donuts he's a Mexican with a kick ass name! Big ups mexicutioner haha!
suddenly HTC becomes the next ASUS wtf?? lol
Looks like AT&T will be in last place as always. Behind on cell phone technology and not moving into 4G till next year. Feel like I'm going to move to Sprint this Summer.
@Inspector Gadget80
i feel you my friend, att does suck
The timing of Verizon's comments are so self evident. Whenever a big event or wave of news around Sprint's 4G network or EVO is released they immediately do a press release about their upcoming network or the fact they'll have 5 LTE handsets... blah blah blah. That latest on the LTE handsets is just stupid. Who just comes out and says that? May is a year away! But of course they're a little worried that someone is actually stealing their thunder.(sprint of course)
If you recall they did the EXACT same thing with the Pre release last year. The week before the launch they leaked, on purpose, that they would be getting the Pre at the end of the year of course hoping that people would hold off and just get it on Verizon. Now they're coming out saying they'll have 5 LTE handsets a year from now... give me a break. Really what they're trying to say is, "Why don't you just sit around and wait for a year for us to come out with our own handsets. We're pretty sure they'll be cool like the EVO."
I can't say i really blame them but it's just becoming so obvious
@XBKC Sprint really has nothing on Verizon, the EVO might be coming out, but, it is just a marketing scheme to distract from the fact that 4g is not everywhere yet, so while sprint might be screaming "come get the 4.3 inch screen" the phone is pretty much useless, add to it the fact that Verizon is number 1 and sprint is number 3...
@Rimz007, how many markets does Verizon have 4G in... Exactly!!! By years end Sprints 4G footprint will cover 120 million people. Again, where is Verizons?...
@scorpeo Yeah, but Verizon did not release a phone claiming it supports 4g? Verizon is releasing phones next may, so realistically speaking Verizon seems tho have thought this through more than Sprint
@Rimz007, do you have any idea what next generation wireless is? When 3G first rolled out, it was in spots, the same number of markets. Now look how big Sprints 3G footprint is. 4G will be similar. It has to start some where. Verizon will not roll out 4G all at once, it will be in small markets.
@Rimz007
Depends on your viewpoint there. Sprint may not have the market value, but from a consumers standpoint they have a lot on VZW. Sprint has great coverage at a much better price.
@scorpeo
By years end VZW will cover approx. 100 million people. How long has Sprint been working on WiMax?
@NKTizzle
it's easy to sit and talk about the possibilities of the future. We could sit and do that all day long, but get no where. Current facts are what stand out.
android could have been soo much better. had google ditched moto, lg, and stuck with htc designing their phones ONLY like the nexus nd used vanilla for every android phone with optional attachments from other companies (sense widgets) it would have removed fragmentation and made the platform more unified.
thats what i admire about apple. instead of making 50 tablets that dont stand out they could have made 1 that has htc's wonderfful hardware and be in direct competition with the ipad.
@HTCAndroidTre
Apple being on only one phone is whats hurting them now. See, this is the first time there is actually competition to the iPhone. WinMo tried with, on multiple phones and got spanked. BB is kinda not in it since they are more business type phones. I wont even comment on Palm....
Diversity is needed...ppl get tired of the same ole same ole.
@HTCAndroidTre
And only HTC? I dont think so....what you consider great hardware , someone might not. Some ppl have bad experiences with a certain brand they stay away from it.Every forum I go to I see Motorola, HTC, LG, Samsung are the greatest and worst phones ever made...lol
@jroc74
lol i didnt mean for google to only make one handset. im just saying that android should have gone with ALL of their phones having and sleek smartphone look. and it seems that htc has been the only company to do that for android so far. hero,eris,nexus,desire,inc,legend etc. and moto has the droid.
but all the other android devices look like... feature phones. like the moment,cliq,g1(i know its htc made but YUCK),ally(sort of),devour,backflip etc...
but your completely right. i guess it all comes down to personal preference.
but android imo would be better with vanilla os and palms eyecandy thrown in.
Look cut the bull on sprints everything crap.
70 bucks is for anytime mobile and only 450 landline. + 10 for evo + 30 for tethering that's hey.....$110 + taxes 135 $ month and it's not unlimited. So all you broke college boys suck on that.
Ohhh and they should have bought palm and integrated it in to vanilla android
Me too!
Required data plans can suck my gadget, greedy network dill do's! LTE or not, mobile data is a rip off, especially when there are free wifi hot spots spread out almost everywhere!!!! LTE looks tight, and 4G in general sounds cool--- how about some free data....! in a free country, were advertisements can pay for things like data, and should pay for things like cable TV access.... Where TF does verizon or any other carrier get off overcharging so much for data..... Splice that cable~
Up to 5 handsets?!? By next May?!?!
Are you kidding?
I'm always hesitant to buy a new smartphone because it always ends up the "be all/ end all" smartphone is just a month away from being leaked/spied/released.
If Bug Red wants to entice me with something for next May - I'll bite. Where do i pre order? By next May I'll be able to pick it up on my hover board.
The t with the 3 beams coming off it in the copyrighted LTE logo sure looks an awfull lot like they ripped you off Engadget! Word.
Good thing I only took a one year contract with my new Incredible... Wait.
Even though I'm an Android lover and a current owner of the Nexus One, I still believe Android tablets will have a hard time competing with the iPad. Its realllllllllly nice.
Well, I got my Touch Pro2 knowing that my NE2 would be up in May 2011, and thinking that LTE devices would be out by then.
Love it when a plan comes together, but hoping that something with Android, 1+ ghz, and TP2-like QWERTY will be one of these 5.
Excited to see the 2011 manufacturer roadmaps leaking around November/December/January.
Hopefully the Storm 3 will be LTE
