Twitter for iPhone (Tweetie 3.0) slowly going live around the world
So look -- you've got a plethora of options on the iPhone to keep you connected to the Twitterverse, but if you're looking for something a touch more official, the wait is nearly over. A few short weeks after Twitter acquired Atebits, the creators of the Tweetie app, the company issued the first official Twitter app for Android; tonight, it looks as if a revamped version of Tweetie (3.0, obviously) will claim that same crown over on iPhone OS. It's tough to say exactly what changes are coming, but a few sporadic tips are coming in from far-flung corners of the globe saying that it's already available. If we were the betting type, we'd say it'll finally pop up in the US app store right around midnight. Pins and needles, we know.
Update: It's live in New Zealand, and the full changelog is after the break. Hang tight, everyone else!
Update 2: We're seeing scattered reports that it's now available in the US. Thanks for the image, Danny!

- Tweetie is now Twitter! We didn't just do a name change, we've added a bunch of new stuff.
- Search has been reorganized, now you can search all tweets and find users in the same spot, view Top Tweets and Browse Suggested users.
- Search results now include Top Tweets, try it with Trends...winner combo!
- You can now use Twitter without an account! Search, Browse uses, view trends and top tweets.
- Sign-up is now availabile within the application as well, complete with Suggested user list.
- More tab has been re-organized to accomplish all this. Users with one account can add a second account under the Accounts and Settings button here.
- Actions we've found people use most, like Retweet have been moved to the main actions bar.
- Minor tweaks were made to tweet rendering so they match Twitter.com tweets
We're receiving the first screenshots, and the app has a new icon. Images courtesy of @sam_symons.

why are these articles in /exclude/apple? if i wanted to read about apple news i wouldn't be using the exclude system.
@saturnblackhole
HURRR DURRR HURR DURR HURR!
@mukatuna how can just going to a website infect your pc?
oh…
Is it me, or is tweeitie not listed on the app store anymore?
@Techgeek94
Not you. It was in my wishlist as I was waiting for it to go free. Not there or in the App store anymore.
@summerboy18
Uh? Sorry, man I don't get down like that
Just tried downloading, this is what i am getting
http://www.flickr.com/photos/42750747@N06/4620175643/in/photostream/
download it, used it, delete it...i'll stick with my TweetDeck, allowed me to update my facebook at the same time...
Ugh, the update shows up but its not letting me download it. LAME!
why isn't /exclude/apple working?
@FitFan Its not an Apple post, it's a twitter post regarding an iPhone app.
@illmaticstill Mmm ... ok. How about the post about iPhone OS 4.0? Is that an Apple post?
@FitFan U got me on that one champ, just bringing light to the current post...didn't mean to offend.
@illmaticstill
Champ? Haha ... I haven't heard that one in a while.
@FitFan They must have forgotten to tag them with 'Apple' :P
I wish they would update Tweetie for Mac to support the "tweet your location" feature. I don't like having to use the web interface to do that. Anyone know of any Mac twitter clients that support that?
I held of buying Tweetie 2 for this. I hope this comes out as better than that one. I've been an active Twitter user for the past few months since I bought by iPod Touch and I've been using a lot of free Twitter clients and hopefully this one turns out better than what's currently available.
This better be upgrade not a downgrade.
Tweetie 2 is the best Twitter app for the iPhone. I only hope that now its been officialised they don't mess it up. Plus it would be nice if we got a refund for our purchase, but thats dreaming really isn't it? Wasn't in my App Store updates this morning.
Yawn. For the rest of us who don't care about iPhones, can they now get back to working on v2 of the desktop version that we were promised, please?
Where the heck is it. It's 5am pacific time USA and iTunes says it's not available on my country (the iTunes link in the article)

It still amazes me how so many people can come into a thread and post "I don't care about this". "I hate Twitter" in this case. If you are so narcissistic that you need to see your words in print, then I hate to break it to you, you'd LOVE Twitter!
On topic (sorry), I am looking forward to this. Tweetie 2 was the best Twitter app. Only thing I'm not seeing here is whether this will be a universal iPad/iPhone app or just an iPhone app for mow.
I was able to download the app by clicking "FREE APP," but it says that it isn't available in the store if you click to go to the app's page.
just downloaded, awesome app
Its available in UK now.
what is that bell shaped icon doing next to the battery % notification - any ideas anyone?
never come across it !
its def not the alarm clock cos its on the left of that icon..
