Wii Rowing Machine aims to sculpt abs, achieves belly laughs (video)
CTA strikes again! The company known for its unorthodox (and rather silly) game controllers is back with a plastic drawbar / foot pedal combo that is supposed to be "very similar to a rowing machine you would find at the gym," although we highly doubt it. Designed for games like Wii Sports Resort and Jillian Michaels' Angry Sports Resort, this is something that would probably only enter your home as an ill-considered Christmas gift before gathering dust in the back of a closet, alongside your Bowling Ball and Football controllers. But we must admit, even if the company's products are dubious, its infomercials are an endless source of entertainment. See for yourself after the break. As for the rowing machine, it's up for pre-order now at Amazon, as if you care.

CTA Digital Introduces an Inventive Rowing Accessory for Wii™
CTA Digital has been leading the game accessory market with bold ideas. Their recent rowing accessory is the perfect companion for Exergaming.
BROOKLYN, NY – CTA Digital (http://ctadigital.com) has introduced their latest accessory for the Nintendo Wii™, the Rowing Machine.
This rowing accessory allows Wii™ users to add some cardiovascular action to their exercises. It is a basic non-electric accessory, which is quite similar to typical rowing machines at gyms. Users can increase or decrease the resistance of their workouts by adjusting the tension knob. The base of the Rowing Machine has secure foot pedals with Velcro straps. The Wii Remote™ goes into a cradle attached to the pull bar.
This simple to setup accessory takes the experience of rowing games to another level, by adding realism and tension to the actions. Being compact, it does not take up too much space in the house, and is also easy to carry around.
Rowing exercises all major muscle groups: legs, arms, back, abdominal, and buttocks. While legs provide most of the power of the stroke, the upper body adds the rest. It adds flexibility around joints, develops endurance, increases aerobic conditioning, and burns calories faster than biking.
This Rowing Machine accessory is compatible with a number of Wii games, including Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports Resort, Jillian Michaels Fitness, Ultimatum 2009 & 2010, and more.
The Rowing Machine for Wii will be available on Amazon (http://tinyurl.com/3x2drbg) and other retail outlets on June 27th, 2010. If you're curious about how it works, feel free to check out the video demo on Youtube: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6QaxPU9qBI)

AMA approved; Epic Fail... if you want to make working out fun, turn on some music!
@cosmicinglewood
Next: Skydiving where the Wii simulates the parachute. LOL
I laugh at this... Till I realize I don't exercise at all. Then I cry a bit. But then I laugh again cause I think of this video.
how exactly does this replace everything you would have at a gym?
@TTownsend18
and another example that demonstrates how people who use ergometers in gyms have no idea what they're doing.
@wack
Haha, I agree. Rowing actually requires LEG motion as well.
@TTownsend18
Didn't you see the string she was pulling on?
@wack yeah. having rowed though highschool for a top program, it makes me sad when i go to the gym and see all the ergs set at a 10 resistance.
NOTE TO PEOPLE LEARNING TO ERG: ergs don't work like weights, so if you think it's too easy, it's because you're not pulling hard enough. the harder you pull, the more resistance the machine gives. for reference, set the erg around a 3 or 4, and never higher than a 5. i could explain why, but just trust me.
Oh dear, this is so bad. Nothing like a gym rower at all. Who buys this crap?
@Apple Google Microsoft:
Old people who can't lift weight. At least it gets them to move.
@Jordan
Hmmm, I don't think old people will appreciate having to get down on the floor and swing backwards and forwards lol.
@Apple Google Microsoft:
Who says they have to get on the floor? I can see this being done in a chair.
Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of stupid shit for the Wii, but if it gets old people to move - go for it.
@Jordan
Hmm good point. Will they like watching the screen though? I dunno if oldies are that into games.
That looks more like canoeing than the rowing machines in a gym. No that there is anything bad with that, canoeing is less monotonous.
This is kayaking. Not rowing. BIG difference.
awkward motion plus uncomfortable position?
no ty
if it could work the legs like a rowing machiene does then I would probably go for it ...
as is, it might be worth $35 if it came with a great game that used it, or maybe $15 if it was just the station.
It's nice to see that they sprung for the deluxe recording studio.
"Angry Sports Resort" had me laughing out loud. -At work, I'm laughing out loud, seemingly no reason.
I used to row; the only decent rowing machines are from the Concept series.
I guess this might be fun, but I would rather row then come home and shoot stuff.
Or play xbox.
Your fat is MINE!
The Wii gimmicks continue and it works.
@Elliot Bridgewater
"now if you want more tension in your pull"
Somehow the fact that they are so busy "rowing" in the practice mode baffles me. Must be really fascinating!
A closeup of the saucy redhead would have had me more interested. fail.
I haven't paid much attention to the wii in a long while, at least not after I beefed up my PC, gotten a xbox and ps3 that is. Once I got those the only thing I could do is use my Wii as a modified home entertainment... aww shi--- damn you nintendo and your ill-humored name branding!
My knob was under a lot of tension last night.
The worst part is, to me at least, is that a company like this wouldn't be making these products if they didn't sell. Soccer moms will eat this junk up.
Not only is this so far from an actual rowing machine that its laughable, but it also takes out one of the most important parts of the exercise and thats the legs. Rowing machines are large because they have a sliding seat and one of the biggest problems with people who have no training on rowing machines is that they don't use their legs effectively and they put too much strain on their backs. I only see this causing more back problems if used incorrectly so maybe its better if it just sits in the corner and gathers dust. It will probably help more that way.
Rowing is done seated backwards, she's paddling... incorrectly, but still paddling.
Just like the gym, but no resistance.
hmmm $80 gym membership for a few months or $80 faux rowing machine... Decisions decisions...
I find it Great !!! All the others that you think the opposite, you are just too lazy
@aelaos or maybe i find it stupid because it's nothing like a real rowing machine (usually called an "erg," short for "ergometer"). if you know what you're doing, using a real erg can give you the most difficult workout you've ever done.
sex is a better work out than this oh! yeah! we're on a geek site my bad...
@K3vino loving making is better than this*** sex is dangerous as it can be done between any two beings, and can transmit diseases know to cause cancer, pain, misery, suffering, death and pose a widespread burden to our health care system; F that Noise and jerk it or find one person that you like, become friends, fall in love and then make love; sex is for idiots- love making is for real people that have functional rational brain!
@K3vino but I agree that bumping and grinding is a much better work out than any stupid shit they sell for this whack bung sissy dill soccer mom gaming system--- wii wii.... on those french fries !
A Non-Electric Wii game with no set up required? Does that mean I can use it without power and that it will set itself up for me?
And how does that thing change how you do sit-ups?
just saying i rlly hope tht this is a joke or something......
@colts2713 http://proselyytti.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/thats_the_joke.jpg
Something tells me that a rowing machine with 0 resistance won't do much for ones ab work out.
this belongs on the onion news
attempts to break your neck while trying to watch your "canoe" on the tv...
people buying this is the same ipad buyers
hum... I admit I wanted to buy this because I don't have a gym close to home, but then I realised that your butt doesn't move as in real rowing machines, and so your legs stay in the same position, so this is a really bad bad device.
