Google Wave opens doors to public, asks old friends for new chance
To think, it was about this time last year that Google first unveiled its collaboration tool Wave, and today the company's taking out the invitational step and opening it to the public at large -- which begs the question, did anyone not have an invite that wanted one at this point? It'll also be now available in the enterprise-centric Apps suite for no extra charge. On the developer side of things, expect some more open source code be unleashed, including most importantly the rich text editor. Can't say we've really dug around in the service ourselves since its beta launched, but co-creator Lars Rasmussen tells us we should be giving it another go. He further acknowledged that they've got some work to do on educating users on the best ways to use the service, which at this point seems to be mid- and small-scale collaboration. To that end, expect some new tutorial videos, and with any luck, some amusing animation.

Every time I used the service for collaboration with students and instructors, there was massive lag in just typing - AIM was a faster solution for all of us.
@Tommy Five
Same here. I used it for probably a week. Then nothing. Same with buzz actually. C'mon google! Release some real important things, like Quake in the Browser! oh wait...
@Tommy Five
I use Wave a lot for collaboration. Haven't experienced the lag issues that you noted.
Wave is a solid tool with some pretty major issues still. My guess is that the technology behind Wave will be useful in the future, but the app itself will fade off into the sunset.
@Tommy Five Google Wave would work MUCH better if it were a standalone application, instead of being browser based. When i signed for an invite i honestly thought it was an application. But in its browser form, it's just too buggy, not to mention compatibility issues, and security issues (phishing)
@Tommy Five The lag is simply unbearable on my work computer. I have noticed that it works better in a webkit based browser such as Safari or Chrome. It does not work well with IE or FF.
So how do you get a Google Wave account? Just sign up for a Gmail account?
@Tommy Five
the lag becomes unbearable after a wave hits 30 or so blips (what they call entries/posts). after that it's easier to start a new wave or delete all old information (which essentially ruins the continuity and the point of using wave).
until they can fix the lag issue it's too frustrating to use for extended conversations.
@Ryan Deen Yes, signing up for a gmail gets you an account with everything. It's handy.
@bjsguess
same as you, it works wonderfully for me
the only problem i have is that only a very select few friends use it, i mean, not many people see the need for it
either way, i love wave, though, i want real time spelling check, and translation!! last time i went on these still hadnt been implemented :'(
damn it!! *logs onto wave*
Cool beans.
I seethis being invaluable during my Junior year.
@SolidSnake
It wasn't all that impressive. I liked the idea, but as others have noted, it had issues.
@vanmankline Yes it had issues, but looking at it now, it looks much more polished. And I am sure that it will only get better. I see this as becoming a great tool, so long as people use it.
I had thought this project had died. Good to see they are still trying to expand it.
where the damn GOOGLE I/O 2010 live feed???
@inspiron41
I've been watching it for 15 mins... here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/GoogleDevelopers
Don't rely on Engadget to post it. They already ignored the news that Google purchased a VOIP company for Android video calls, for 60-something million $$$.

Not ignored...
@inspiron41 IF this was AN APPLE EVENT THEY WOULD BE ALL IN EL JOBSOS ASS! LITERALLY
What a joke. I guess Topolsky's too busy practicing his Late Night TV speeches for the new damn iphone
@inspiron41
Are you guys dumb? Watch the live feed, I've been watching it for the last 30 minutes, it's boring as fudge! If you follow tech bloggers on twitter, they are pretty much singing the same tune. Also, Google has said that day 2 will be the big keynote.
Engadget Reader: Why is the Google I/O feed not covered on Engadget
Josh Topolsky: Steve is awesome...err, you said something?
Isn't Google's I/0 conference today? I was looking forward to some Android/Google news.
I'm a sad panda now T__T
@NaeemTHM
maybe they thought it was the Apple event and went over there....
@NaeemTHM
Same here :(
@NaeemTHM
It's 9am where Google's I/O event is. Just relax. The news will come throughout the day.

Gizmodo has a live feed going on now, don't know what engadget is doing.

Sorry I'm on the east coast...you know how anxious we get about this stuff :-P
I'm the same way when Apple has their conference as well. Guess I'll continue to F5 every 5 minutes!

No they didn't. Get your facts straight, just because you missed it doesn't mean they didn't post it.

I haven't logged into Wave for AGES.......
Good to see them correcting their mistakes. I hope facebook follows suit and reverses its recent move.
google is going to take over the world

Google I/O should be breaking new...where the heck is it??? i think endgadet wasnt invited or something. or perhaps steve job prevent the live streaming over their Apple laptops...
@inspiron41: Go here for the Google IO conference live
http://www.youtube.com/googledevelopers
@216
thanks for the tip, but i tried. it looks like the video streaming is too congested for me to connect
Google I/O livestream here:

Engadget is not covering Google I/O?? What the clusterfluck?
Keynote for the I/O should be starting about now. No live blog?
Google wave is a good idea, I hope they can actually make it work
Google I/O is going on right now?! meh, Not even a peep from Engadget.
Compare that to any Apple event and you would find all editors breathlessly liveblogging about what color T-shirt Steve J. is wearing (black, again), shoes (New Balance, again), coffee beans stuck to his half-shaven straggly beard (Peets, again), any trivial iProduct being launched (Revolutionary and Magical, again).
2 days ago, an upgrade of the Macbook battery was considered "Breaking News".....
@naashak
I, as well, am surprised at the lack of live coverage.
I was thinking about this the other day.
Man, such a crazy fad. Everyone wanted into Wave, then a month later no one remembered what it was.
I want this to be success so much
It's nice to see Google showing support for Wave.
I've been using it on a near daily basis for about 2 months (just to keep my head above the water with my personnal projects and data actually). It lacks polish, and some important functions, but still. I think it's a cool way to work.
I'll say this until blue in the face, face to face in person in the same room collaboration is the only way. Most successful companies out there (that are not featured on Engadget or Techcrunch) are run that way. People need people and there is nothing better than a whiteboard to enlighten the talented masses.
@cherryboom
are you high?
you know, I got an ivite, passe dout a ton of invites and guess what, never once did anyone reply when i tried to start a wave... I have never been able to use the service.
Open or not Wave is still a useless messy piece of shit.
I am all for Google and what they are planning to show but to all those crying about Engadget not covering the event live, there's really no need. Seriously, it's all boring for the average consumer, if you're a developer, I"m pretty sure you're eating up all the stuff they're dropping into your hands.
For consumers though, our day is day 2...tomorrow.
