So there's no question that Apple is selling a
ton of iPads, but would you have guessed that it's actually selling more iPads than all Mac sales combined? That's the case, at least at the moment, according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, who says that Apple is currently moving about 200,000 iPads per week, compared to 110,000 Macs -- though it still trails the iPhone, which is apparently racking up sales of 246,000 per week. Of course, we are just talking about analyst estimates here, and things could potentially swing back into the Mac's favor once the quarterly totals are added up. If true, however, it'd sure be a whopper of a milestone -- one that we'd no doubt be hearing plenty more about in, say,
three weeks time.
@darksharpie. Because some other pretentious metrosexual who's bigger than you might say something mean and take it from you, along with your lunch money?
@sferic2000
Even if that was the case.. I don't know a single person who owns one in the first place. And I know a guy that worked at Apple.. sooo ya.
@sferic2000 You have some pretty serious problems- Im sorry you don't understand the concept of carrying a computing device in a bag :)
@ajwoodhouse
720p is not standard definition. It's high definition. Just thought I'd clear that up for you.
@HighestRanked2
I think you are trying to trick the readers into thinking that Engadget tries to trick them into thinking something. ;-)
Btw, Engadget reported about higher Mac sales just a few weeks ago:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/15/npd-mac-sales-up-39-percent-in-january-and-febuary-as-ipod-sale/
Okay numbers for a manufacturer And software company with a small percentage of the overall PC & Mobile phone market. Better numbers are the fact that Apple's quarterly and annual revenues are quickly approaching the largest desktop software maker Microsoft. Apple has small market share but influences 3 distinct markets; computers, phones, & media players.
@newsjunkie. Please. Apple's market cap is equivalent to Webvan or Pets.com. Short it now if you have any sense.
@sferic2000
haha. You know Apple is 8 times bigger than Dell, right?
Well considering the latest LONG-AWAITED laptop updates were very underwhelming (uh, I'll keep my 2+ year old C2D MacBook with a real firewire port running, what .2 ghz slower than the current 13" MacBook"Pro", and a usable screen, thanks). And that the cultists in Europe have yet to line up for their magical iPads & discover they can't see half the web. It's not surprising. Apple, you won't be the Windows 95 of the mobile internet, please quit ignoring the Mac. After all these years, you finally created the Mercedes Benz of personal computers, now (like the 190E) you're outsourcing it to Indonesia. FAIL.
really wow!! consumers are so weak minded.
@iPaul. Yep. Twinkies & Doritos sell great too.
@iPaul
Yeah, that's the best response you can come up with in light of the iPad's huge success? You sound like you're just feeling a little stupid now because we told you this would happen and it did.
@Jack
Damn it with faint praise.
If you actually ever bothered to look at the numbers, you would see just how much of a non-compliment this whole article is. So the iPad has manage to best the Mac. So what? Short of the AppleTV, it's Apple's poorest selling item. Apple sells many more ipods and such.
The fact that they need to compare the iPad to the Macs in order to gain some positive spin is actually quite sad really.
@jedi No, what's sad is that you talk about the Mac like Apple isn't selling any of them.
For a device that was said to be "USELESS because I have a real computer," sell more than "real computer" is impressive. All of you geeks and nerds still think your the majority, huh?
I lol'd when I actually read your name.......jedi XD
@Cold Dead Fingers ya know I don't care about the sales figures of Apple, they are insignificant! Consumer's who buy the iPad are weak minded sheoples with no clue about the power and use of a real computer.
Apple have done a great job creating "APPLIANCES" for these newly created "TECH SHEOPLE".
In the mean time MSFT Windows OS & products have outsold everyone and everything and yet the CEO of Apple, Steve Job's claimed the "END of PC's". Someone is in total denial!
@iPaul
Do you know what's really insignificant? The number of apple hating, android loving geeks such as yourself, bitching and whining about how apple products are inferior, then getting all angry when they sell well. Of course the only thing you have left is to preach that everyone who buys apple products are sheep.
Sure, you might claim you don't care about sales, but in reality it's eating you up inside hence why you resort to petty name calling.
Rave on troll, rave on....
@GmanC hope you've been enjoying your HDMI?
1984
@hated one. Yes.
@cherryboom. "Fuck Android" and some totally unsubstantiated dollar figures that would never be made public by any sane company. Wow, do you have a PhD in Business? You MUST be a professor at Stanford. Your arguments are so compelling, informed, and detailed.
@sferic2000 And your arguments show that you have the industry know-how of a lump of concrete. You probably shouldn't be commenting on other people's comments :)
@sferic2000
I like how your reply was even less compelling, informed and detailed. Hypocrisy much?
@sferic2000 Android will go places MSFT have failed to grow into.
Android will run on your Phone, TV, Remote, Fridge,Cable Boxes, Your Car & pretty much any device you can think of.
This will allow more flexible communication between devices.
Android is here and will conquer all appliances,platforms & devices.
@iPaul
Fanboy much?
F'kin moron
Because they realize macs are crap systems and ipads are actually useful? Oh and lower cost also, who would have thought that. Lower price point = more sales. Amazing.
@Amusednow
Ah, and you're amazed the the price goes up with...screen size, accessories, keyboard, etc?
iPad =/= MacBook
Back to Harvard Business school with you, fool!
@skyblaze
"Easy, people... He's a Joystick regular" So fckin what? is that a nobel prize or something?
... and actually, here on engadget, the anti-apple comments are the norm.
not surprised. there is always a peak for new products and then the inevitable climbdown before the next launch.

James

further proof, if you ever needed it, that Apple fans don't actually like computers - they want appliances that constrain them to do what the device maker intended and nothing else
:-P
@speculatrix
Yes, everybody is stupid but you. That must be the explanation. I mean over 50 million iPhones sold? What possible explanation could there be other than those 50 million people are stupid?
Clearly these people don't know that they're living in your universe.
@speculatrix
@jack
I never said ipad users were stupid, you're putting words in my mouth, I said they wanted a device to consume media, and they don't like general purpose computers (perhaps because they offer too much choice which is confusing)
and you missed my smiley, but you're probably an apple fanboy who gets enraged at the slightest HINT of negative commentary and has to rush in and flame the person who made that comment
:-P
lol... this going to blow up in their face...lol
@TheLight
Um... what?
This is just classic spin. iPod sales dwarf Mac sales. At this point in time, Apple is more of a consumer appliance company than a computer company. Their sales have been dominated by ipods and iphones pretty much since those devices were introduced.
The iPad is just an overgrown iPod. So the idea that yet another iPod is going to dwarf the Macs in sales is not terribly surprising or even meaningful.
It's just more nonsense for the hype machine.
I wonder if ipads will cut into the sales of Macs....
oh doom and gloom, the end of Apple...for the 35th year in a row.
Apple = Sheople Tech.
Apple was right! A cheaper computer does caniblize the sales of their over-priced, aluminum and glass encased PoS! PoS isn't really the term that best fits, but I want to be a lazy PoS right now and point out the obvious cheap shot.
Nice sales figures, Apple. A way to go to catch up to 700,000 Android handsets per week though! Check it out:
