Android 2.2 SDK goes live, developers likely unable to crash Google's download server
Giving devs access to freshly-announced versions of mobile operating systems on the very same day that they're announced is pretty much the way things work nowadays -- the first version of Windows Phone 7 understandably excepted -- so we're pleased to see that Google's kit for Android 2.2 Froyo is now up and running. You start out by downloading a modest 18-odd megabyte package that just contains tools with no target platforms, then you open a separate app to pull and install only the platforms you want (you can go all the way back to version 1.5, if you're so inclined). So kick off that download now while you grab lunch -- we hear the lobster bisque they're serving in the cafeteria today is pretty good.

Can't wait for XDA to get their hands on this so I can root my Hero to 2.2!!
Bye bye 2.1... nice knowing ya for 5 days since you were leaked...
@jroman28
At least this answers my install to SD questions. It's the developer's choice and a new variable in the app manifest.
@Evan
Seriously. Today Google responded to requests from users and developers with that, auto updates, etc. These were behind-the-times issues, just prefered changes. It really makes you wonder why Apple made people wait 2 years for freaking copy/paste, a feature that already existed everywhere else.
If I was a developer, I know what OS I'd be moving forward with.
@steel
Correction: these were *not
Lol very minor, right.
Froyo & Cyanogen...yum!
@firerock LOL okay, I had to go look that one up.
I
@Mr Blue
wtf? i tried to write 'i heart google'
@Mr Blue Like this?
I ♥ GOOGLE!
Unlikely to crash servers because there are barely any Developers
Since every other platform has at least a billion developers, what's 100,000?
@MoonWalkerCTE
Um, 175,000 developers are registered for ANDROID. And now 50k apps.. yep.. no developers at all.
@MoonWalkerCTE
Wow, no developers you say; well I must applaud Google on making an OS which can code its own apps.
@MoonWalkerCTE Ohhh, you've been down ranked cause you said something stupid, didn't you? It's ok it's ok, papa Jobs will read you a bedtime story and tell you that it's innovative, don't you worry now. Who's the good troll? Yeah, yes you are.
@spielnicht It;s okay to be yealous it's okay. We know you are all fanboys who cannot face the truth and of course i'm downranked I knew that before I commented, it's obvious when theres 1000000 Fanboys who hype everything related to google because they try and make it look like they dont care about Apples success and Achievements. I remember the same thing happening when the Palm pre came out. Haha you fanboys give me a good old laugh from time to time, how you can cheat yourselves into this big lie.
@MoonWalkerCTE No reply? It's okay you dont want to face it I will let you enjoy your pretendings
@MoonWalkerCTE
1000001 Fanboys )
@HellFlyer
1000001... is that like... 65 in binary???
@Guimo

Time to work on a quick, dirty SDK image port for Dream
so how do i get this puppy on my Nexus One...stat?
When will this be available for N1 users?
@d3sc3nd3ncy "in the coming weeks" from developer blog.
@Timmmmmm
I WAN IT NAO
@Timmmmmm
:(
@GeneralThade Haha damn you your wish is fulfilled :)
With the developer kit does this mean that they will be able to run Froyo? ie, once XDA gets a hold of it, are they going to be able to (possibly) port it to the N1 and other droid phones?
I have the Sony x10i arghhhhhhhhhh
When are the latest phones getting Froyo?
Any Nexus 2?
WindowsUglyStupidDoomedPhone7 DOESN'T MATTER... IRRELEVANT
downloading now
@misterhearn Same here, and getting about 1Mb downstream. Touche, El Goog.
What about the G1? They should get some love too...
@worldbfree4me Nope it;s very rare for andriod phones to actually recieve an update usually you will just need to buy a new handset with the new version on it.
@MoonWalkerCTE
What are you talking about? Lets see.. Motorola Droid, Droid Eris, Samsung Moment, HTC Hero.. in the past month all these phones have been updated to 2.1.. and there are more I have missed. It is NOT rare for Android phones to be updated.. Get a Blackberry if you want that..
@MoonWalkerCTE
You quite obviously don't know anything about android.
You know something is wrong with an OS when you have to rely on 3rd party devs to roll out your device updates
@djnick
Actually not really. Plenty of updates have come out for most android devices. Its just that its an open platform and people don't like to wait. And the fact that it is an open platform has led to some awesome achievements by communities like XDA and developers like cyanogen.
Because of that, my sister's phone (htc g1, first android phone ever) is running the newest (2.1 and 2.2 as soon as it comes out) android version smooth as butter. And my htc magic is also running it, and overclocked to boot. And I can still get a day and a half of battery out of it.
So tell me again why 3rd party developers are a bad thing?
Bring it ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon!!!!!!!!!! 2.2 baby!!!!!!!!!! iPhone 4.0 can kiss my assss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmm, the only thing requiring change for me was that ANDROID_ID was no longer null on the 2.2 emulator so I had to change emulator detection.
Why no source link?
(I've seen this in many articles, which is why I ask / have asked before.)
