CE-Oh no he didn't!: Sony's Sir Howard says 'when you beat Apple, you're dominating'
Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer has always been delightfully direct, and he didn't hold back at Google's I/O conference: talking about Sony Ericsson with Eric Schmidt during the Google TV launch, Sir Howard noted that the Xperia X10 is the best-selling handset in Japan, and that "when you beat Apple, you're dominating -- it's the new definition." Strong words from a gadget titan -- we'll leave it to you to debate their veracity.

That's what you get Apple for suing everyone.
@metaesapuet
This is why Sony is sinking. Second yearly report in red. Please change management or Sony will die.
lol I can just picture the RAGE going on at Engadget now, "how dare he say that about Apple!"
Two iPhone 4's, iTouch with camera, iPhone 4 cases, and now Sony CEO being mean. I bet Steve needs a hug.
@Xtole
Actually, Nilay has a nerd crush on Sir Howard!
I secretly still hold out hope that this relationship brings to life that PSP Phone with Android on it... I so wish it would!
Sony is not going to be this happy when google decides to apply the famous back stab and they come out with their own tv hardware NEXUS-TV.

@Wiizer Really? OMG that's soooooo going on Twitter!!!!
@Drago
as a Sony buyer, I'll be waiting on the Samsung version myself.... Cheaper/Better Picture SOLD
@Vaio
It's a reasonable quote when talking about the smartphone market. As much as I hate to admit, the iPhone is the top dog. If you can beat back the iPhone (or iPod) then yes, that is a victory.
Now in other spaces beating Apple is not such a big deal. And of course, he is referencing one device on it's own home turf. It's something to be happy about but the Xperia is hardly a global phenomenon.
@Drago lol
@Xtole
I think you have confused this site with Gizmodo
@elijahblake But no Bravia Sync. Who else has that kind of integration (although still not perfect)?
@metaesapuet Next artile will be, Steve going to modify some report and show that there numbers are dominating than Google's (Android), with some alteration
@Xtole
I don't know about "how dare he"
rather, it's funny that beating the computer company with 7% market share means you are dominating.
Or what's Apples share in mobile, 1-2% of global handset sales. Oh yeah... Dominating
come back and tell us when you've crushed Nokia or Dell and HP combined now that would be dominating.
Beating Apple is kinda meaningless in either market. And in what measure anyway, units or income.
@Xtole I know, this is really funny, just thinking about it makes me chuckle :)
@dcornibe
no need for Bravia sync, i hit one button on my logitech harmony and it changes everything for me..
@metaesapuet So it doesn't matter that (while Apple has a couple higher profile lawsuits) Sony, Nokia, and Samsung all have more ongoing lawsuits right now than Apple? Of course if you compare it to say HTC, it might seem like alot, but HTC only has 12 patents (according to google patents) compared to the thousands (or hundreds) that most other companies have.
@metaesapuet I think he is talking about what happen in Japan. 75% of smart phone in Japan is iphone, if you can outsell iphone in Japan, you are dominating. That's what he meant. I agree but I still believe X10 sucks since it's still using 1.6... that's like 3 generation behind. 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2
@treats HAHAHA! +1
@bjsguess
Yep the Xperia is just selling very well in Japan and Europe so not worldwide at all !
@Cy Starkman There's no denying that Apple obviously isn't top dog in the game right now overall. But you really need to look at it from the perspective that they have 1 type of phone that's been around for 3 years, on 1 single carrier. Nokia, Motorola and even RIM have been with numerous carriers for FAR longer and have hundreds of models between just those 3... not really comparing apples with apples... no crappy pun intended.
You also can't deny the fact that Apple has made a HUGE impact in the smart-phone marketplace and literally caused the industry to wake up and change their focus and flood the market with phones similar or 'better' than the iPhone. They've set the pace and others are catching up, or as some might say, finally passing...
@metaesapuet He is correct! As google said, you can't control the whole mobile industry with one man only. In the end, it will be Apple Vs Google. http://j.mp/apple-google-battle-inevitable
@elijahblake You meant to say "victim".
When you're not, you blew it.
Oh snap.
They hardcore trolled Apple today.
@aaronbustillos
Flash possible for mobile, apple tv failure reference, and a meeting with the justice league... how could it get any worse?
@aaronbustillos *shivers* I can feel the fanbois going into an immense tizzy over this article.
@N900
OOOHHH i smell a flamewar brewing!

don't be shy, I brought plenty to share =)
@N900
Looking at the comments on this thread, it seems the 'fanbois' aren't the ones getting their knickers twisted.
You hear that noise? Yeah, it's the sound of 500 13 year olds riding a bandwagon
@skyblaze
I saw you cut the hole in the bottom.
I'M ON TO YOU.
@aaronbustillos
Nobody buys these kind of smartphones in Japan anyway... Sony wouldn't have to sell many to overtake the iPhone, Japanese dumbphones do more than our smartphones.
@aaronbustillos hard apple-core?
I can feel Jobs burning through that new liver of his as we speak. ;)
@AuggieBenDoggie And here we have example of A of the internet bringing out the worst in people. It's not even funny. How would you feel if it was you or close friend or family member?
@AuggieBenDoggie: On the contrary. He paid Jobs a very high complement, conceding that Apple is top dog.
@xyglyx
Unfortunately his comment about Apple, as simple as it is to comprehend, goes over the heads of most Engadget readers
@AuggieBenDoggie Are you implying that hes drinking heavily?
@xyglyx The are many things to admire about Steve Jobs, but his anger management skills aren't on of them.
@Dshark
Lol, nope. Just poking his notoriously bad reaction to criticism or even mildly disparaging comments. Something he has in common with his groupies.
On a side note when is froyo out again? all these updates and no one has mentioned about release date :(
@commenter7
They said Q4 2010
@GenericMessage
that was for gingerbread :/
@commenter7
"in the coming weeks" is the word around xda
@commenter7
right after the Microsoft Courier & the HP Slate Get released!!
@commenter7 June for the N1 and the Moto Droid. Gingerbread (2.3? 3.0? Who knows the number) is due in Q4...
When you beat Apple, they blew it!
@DoctarPeppar. When your planet explodes, I blew it
