Google claims Froyo has the world's fastest mobile browser
You heard it here first, folks. Google has just come out with the strident claim that the web browser in Android 2.2, aka Froyo, is the world's fastest for mobile devices. Having implemented the V8 JavaScript Engine that's already made an appearance in its desktop Chrome browser, Google's reporting JavaScript performance that's somewhere in the vicinity of two to three times better than what you can get from previous Android versions. We'll give this geek cabal some style points for the double equals sign up top, but will certainly be putting its bold assertion to the test in the very near future.

Seeing is believing, plus there is still no actual release date..
@nomistake
Just like back in the day when car companies said "Our cars are the most fuel efficient in the world!"
I cant wait for HTC to put their load on Froyo.....
@nomistake
Also, will Froyo provide Android with TRUE HANDS-FREE Bluetooth operation?
As of today, Android phones do not allow the simple ability to voice-dial or voice-command your phone from your headset.
Rather, one must physically dial, or command, directly from your phone.
The Droid doesn't, neither does the HTC EVO, HTC Hero, HTC Incredible, Nexxus One, and others.
Does ANYONE know why this problem exists?
I love Android (Have a Hero and WinMo TP2) but this PHONE issue needs to be addressed.....especially for those of us who live in states where the law requires any operation of a phone while driving, be hands-free.
All the whiz-bang tech is great, but at least provide users with this simple PHONE operation which is currently available on non-android phones.
@nomistake
They did show it. They did a side-by-side comparison showing Froyo vs. Eclair vs. iPad. Froyo kicked butt.
@Ted S Because bluetooth is for tards...
@mr88 cosign.
@nomistake I saw, and I believed. The demo was like Michael Phelps on steroids.
I knew what to expect once he uttered the words: "V8 javascript for Android".
@Ted S Froyo will allow voice dialing over Bluetooth. Check the developer site.
@MowDownJoe
Thanks!
This is great news!!!!
Thanks again!
@nomistake True, and once some independent reviews come out we'll now more but I suspect that it will be quite the speed improvement.
Great Scott!
@Emmett Brown 1.21 gigawatts!

Bored with characters from books/movies/tv get a life.
Smokin' fast!!
Wow, big jump in performance there.
Dayum!
Meh.
Why is he using a Macbook?
@Dead Man Inc
Why would google have anything against Mac PCs?
@Dead Man Inc
Whats much funnier: They used a WiFi-Only iPad to show the new Hotspot-feature...
@Dead Man Inc
Because Google folks are techies, not MS slaves?
@Dead Man Inc Only people who are pseudo-techies hate Macbooks. Programmers who like to use shell-scripts etc use Linux (mostly) or OS X. OS X has UNIX guts. Macs are well-built. I love the trackpad and the many gestures that it supports. Also, love the magsafe power connector. Yes they are more expensive but you have to pay for quality and more importantly for me... customer support.... bar none.
@Dead Man Inc Macbook users are Google's highest dollar spent per click ad customers, so of course they like Macbooks.
@JojoMojo Erm no. Most programmers would have a mac, PC and a Linux box. You can guarantee that they'd have a PC. Linux and Mac are less likely. The idea that programmers all have macs is bullshit, seeing as that is the platform least programmer friendly, and most expensive, and also has a small user base. I know Linux has an even smaller user base, but it is the most programmer friendly, and it's totally free. PC is ubiquitous, and sits in the middle for programmer friendliness and cost.
@JojoMojo Customer support must be great if the nearest Apple store isn't 50 miles away.
When your laptop breaks they don't collect and return like every other PC maker.
The magsafe doesn't last long thanks to crappy small internal springs (On my 3rd at £60 a pop) The plastic macbooks crack like crazy, I'm on my 3rd top, which has just cracked again, and the macbook never leaves the house or gets carried around.
I'll be replacing it with a VAIO or an ASUS laptop soon since they come with a 2 year warranty.
I don't hate Apple and still love my iMac but I have found support to be poor. I live in Edinburgh the capital of Scotland and we don't have an Apple store.
I'm sick of arguing with them on the phone then driving 20 miles to leave it to a 3rd party service center only to collect it a week later, even HP who I also refuse to go back to could do repairs in 3 working days by courier.
So they lost a customer.
they will show it on their next video with shooting potatoes...
Blah...
My mind is in the clouds this morning - looking at that pic it seems like he's DJing.
@Rainier
lol
I thought the exact same thing. The portion of the Engadget logo even looks like some kind of childish, cartoony bass effect.
Since they used a double equals sign it's gotta be true.
Today is like Christmas. All these improvements, Google is kicking it into overdrive.
@JONNNathannn yeaa dude! these google fellas r really rocking it hard!
@JONNNathannn You do realize that Chrome and the Android Web Browser are both based on WebKit, right?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_web_browsers#WebKit-based_browsers
@das
so what?
@das It's not WebKit that is providing the massive speed increase in Chrome & the new Froyo browsers, it's Google's V8 Javascript engine. Check out the geeky video for details http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTkTBKSnqbA
Hopefully they packed some UI improvements into the browser as well. Either way, this should be great.
Anyone else thought at first that it was Steve Jobs doing the demonstrating? I almost passed out.
JAVASCRIPT V8 FOR ANDROID..... WOW
Finally... I've been wanting this ever since I switched to Chrome.
its oooooooooopen source... Palm uses the same engine for web-os. For the browser and their javascript apps (which is most of them. 3d games don't use javascript, but most other apps do)
as a pre user i'm really happy since my pre will
improve, and I might one day be an android
user. I still like webos way to much, but unless
palm (and soon hp) steps it up it's going to be falling behind.
android is becoming a bigger, and bigger threat to apple, so iphone users should be happy cause then apple will be more competetive. Price, and feature wise.
@Nimer55 Android and it's partners are just doing what developers and their partners in the industry have always done and the concept is simple; Build and Share ideas to bring to market then build on what they have learned. Kind of "ol school" but it is what grew this industry.
My favorite thing is the guy is the pic is using an Apple computer! lol
Those charts show how google just rapes everyone with speed
Google become more evil. They want conquer everything. Watch Out!!!
I bet the BlackBerry Bold 9000's browser is somewhere near the bottom. If you so much as fathom the concept of turning on Javascript, pages can take as much as 45 seconds, sometimes more to render. This is on WIFI.
Great to see how far mobile browsers are coming!
Even better than Opera Mini?
This will be interesting!
@Johnny Rockets I wondered the same, I assume without delving deeper, that this is for full renders -not sure if that's the perfect terminology, but essentially not utilizing compression on Opera Mini.
I just loaded RealLifeComics.com in under Five Minutes!
