LG's Windows Phone 7 phone caught in the wild, looking good
Been wondering how that LG proto unit debuted on The Engadget Show is doing? Pocket-lint got to see the QWERTY slider up close and personal in London yesterday, and their takeaway from the meetup was that the device and OS are well on their way to stardom. Calling it the LG Panther, they delve into its deep Facebook integration, which throws up status updates when you hit on a contact in your address book, ability to recognize addresses and provide relevant links to Bing maps, as well as its quick and clear Zune media player. The latter was accompanied by confirmation that the Zune Store will be hitting the UK in time for Windows Phone 7's release, which could happen as early as September -- it all depends on who you talk to. Hit the source for more imagery and impressions.

Damn thats sexy.
@furquanatique
Hmmm, really? It's certainly not bad in any way but it's a little boring to me, like most of LG's stuff. They're like the HP of Korea - respectable design but pretty drab. The sexiest thing about it is that it's the first WP7 phone we've seen more than a couple pictures of :)
@furquanatique
good news to my fellow gadget lovers in the uk. i've seen in a lot of comments you've guys have been wanting the zune hd, but since the service is launching in september, well ahead of the ''holidays'' window, and i know there's gonna be a zune hd2 which will be fully compatible w/ the wp7 platform and apps, i would assume that maybe you guys will finally get access to it.
@furquanatique
you said it. As long as its not on at&ts network, ill buy it. 80 bucks for a stupid data plan with 600kb download in NYC is laughable. I had 2-3mb down with Sprint last year and NO dropped calls. Just say no to AT&t
@furquanatique The fake Omnia HD with WP7 has also been snapped in the wild: http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2010/05/18/live-picture-of-samsungs-windows-phone-7-prototype-phone/
@chrisrottan I don't know what your talking about cuz I download at 3.5 Mbps and sometimes 4mbps... I believe you confused yourslef with ur crappy sprint network cuz my brother has sprint and he downloads at 6 to 700 Kbps.
@tonicboy Agree. And I STILL don't get the blue box UI. How is this intuitive? It will take more than a casual glance to even know what you are selecting. After using touch interfaces for 2 years in real world conditions, I think this interface will suck.
@johnnydfred ... the boxes have universally-recognized symbols on them and most boxes have animated multimedia to them. What more do you want complainer?
@johnnydfred
you forget there's already a boxy & simple ui everyone seems to adore and thinks is inovative.
@furquanatique: This phone is "sexy?" Are you serious? And Highest Ranked? Are the rest of you serious???
I gotta say, I'm not digging this UI. It takes an incredible amount of screen real estate to provide simple info. iPhone, Android, RIM, and Palm show you everything W7 is showing on this screen, plus, oh, another 10 app icons or so. :(
This reminds me of one of those cell phones for kids/the elderly with the gigantic buttons. Microsoft ditched functionality for style. Daily usability does not look promising.
@HotFuzz
You must have a different iPhone OS than what's on my Touch. My Touch doesn't show me previews of emails received on the home screen. It doesn't show status updates on Facebook on my home screen either (both of which WP7 can do). And that's just the beginning.
Now, if you really want a home screen then the best out there is Manila 2.5 for Sense. Multiple easy to read clock choices, up coming calendar appointments, weather, and a launcher that will kick off a call to a contact, an application, or a shortcut for a particular web page. Oh, and it's completely customizable (especially with plug-ins like Cookie). It makes virtually all other home screens look pathetic, especially the iPhone.
@tonicboy Agree 100% with tonic on this. The device is a bit uninteresting, as LG phones often are, but the OS is what makes us excited. I really am looking forward to seeing more devices with it soon.
@furquanatique I disagree, but I also think it will be a great phone.
agreed
so nice. They changed the IE logo to white
@account5
But its still IE
@HellFlyer
and? I use IE8. its safer than firefox by a mile. IE was the first browser to integrate features that protect you against phishing and malware, and the first to embed domain highlighting, Cross-Site scripting protection, InPrivate filtering—the list goes on and on. It involves a lot of technical jargon, but the point is, IE8 is the only browser to offer this level of security right out of the box.
so what were you saying?
@account5
He's saying that it still is god damn slow and ugly
@Stengo
its not slow. A lot of Firefox and Chrome advocates like to cling to micro-benchmarking page load claims to measure browser speed. But in most cases, these differences can only be viewed by slow-motion video captures, and they just don't represent real world examples.
@account5
Wow dude, you're sucking Microsoft's... lollipop pretty hard.
@account5
Well I've tried them on my own, believe me. And last time I checked (I believe it was a few weeks ago when I formatted my hard drive) the IE was noticeably slower than my current browser (Chrome).
But after all we are just talking about desktopbrowsers right now and they have no relevance for the mobile version.
It could still be a great mobile browser in WP7.
@Stengo I add to this. In Javascript-heavy environments IE8 is noticeably slower. It's not as if you lose toons of time, for most pages you don't notice, but in some productivity environments (Web 2.0 CRM etc) it really helps using another browser. I still prefer IEU, though, for home use, for the way it can automatically filter cookies you wouldn't want. In Chrome and Firefox there's no similar option (there is in Safari).
But all these arguments are kinda pointless when we talk about the mobile version of IE-WP7 will have a new version, we cannot know already whether it will be better or worse from the competition. And I trust Opera will manage to get an Opera Mini app to WP7.
@tecgoblin
You just killed your entire argument by using the phrase "web 2.0"
Im a web dev, and a most devs know that anyone who uses this buzzword is a clueless person.
@tecgoblin
lol jk
@account5 Well the buzzword was used in yesterday's Google I/O....
@HellFlyer Whats the problem with IE? It is not that slow at all...you can browse the Web very well and it is super secure...i am a Opera user but if there is IE8 on a system i have no problem with that...
@bluefisch200
When I install a fresh copy of Windows I use IE....To install Firefox
@account5 Are you serious? IE8 safer than FireFox??? Granted they may both have the same adobe vulnerabilities, but everytime someones machine is hosed, it's usually because of IE8. I stick FireFox with adblock on there and disable the adobe integrated plugin and I rarely hear back from them again.
If you're a content dev, have you ever tried to use IE with a mapping app or an app that uses canvas? It's extremely slow, especially when you try to add content to it. Even Microsoft acknowledges just how slow and outdated it is : http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/benchmarks/SunSpider/Default.html
See the big blue bar that's nowhere close to anyone else...that's IE8.
@tonicboy
Insert hateful Internet Explorer comment.
Follow up with recycled security flaw issue.
Optional: Google various statistics and post them in order to sound scientific to emboss your opinion.
@HellFlyer if you ever use a zuneHD and check out the browser, its phucking great. and its the same kind of browser on the windows7 phones. i hate explorer but that new mobile browser is sweet.. try it on the zunehd b4 u bash it
@account5
I dig the IE6 style logo. Give it a bit more flare, for Christ's sake.
@account5 Actually, Chrome is the safest because of it's children's play area. And by that, I mean sandbox
just get rid of IE and set.
@AdmAckbar
or how about you dont buy it if you dont like it, we dont want whiners using this good phone
@AdmAckbar IE is fast...ever seen IE9 Benchmarks...Fx is a joke against him...
@account5
We also dont want crap, archaic web browsers on this good phone.
@bluefisch200 IE Mobile is not based on IE 9 though it's somewhere between 7 and 8
LG Panther. You guys didnt even write the name in the artcle.
@account5 Yes they did "calling it the LG Panther" -- it's coherently named.
@account5 RTFA
Seeing that big blue IE symbol in the bottom corner has just made me much more interested in Android. MS is trying to exercise more control over the mobile experience with WM7, and they get enough wrong (e.g., IE) that I want to stick with the platform that leaves me in control.
@mhhd
it has pieces of IE9 and IE8 in the new mobile IE. it also has sub-pixel positioning to zoom in and have the text appear perfect
@mhhd
I don't understand your argument. All mobiles need a default browser... it only makes sense for Microsoft to incorporate their own. Apple does it for their iTouch/iPhone... Android does too. Why can't Microsoft?
@mhhd
lol Amen
@mhhd
"big blue ie logo" looks like a white logo to me. Are you blind?
@Vimono well said, I pressed the little plus button for your comment :)
@Vimono "Why can't Microsoft"
Well duh, it's Microsoft. Anything they do is obviously and therefore automatically wrong. I mean it's not like Google has ever failed before! The Nexus 1 was a raging success, remember?
@Walker Touche. Remind me to use you for my next law suit.
@mhhd Its already been stated that other browsers (like opera) are welcome to enter windows marketplace...
@account5
Dude you got upranked! I'm impressed.
