PS3's Torne digital TV tuner / DVR adapter gets 2.00 software update next month
Japan hasn't had a lot of time to get used to the PlayStation 3's Torne digital TV tuner since it launched in March, but it's already getting an update which will add a few more DVR features to improve the experience. Coming in June, v2.00 will enable MPEG-4 AVC compression to squeeze HDTV recordings by as much as 3x their original size as opposed to just copying the original MPEG-2 stream even while playing a game, plus the ability to start watching a program and fast forward/reverse while it's still recording and update the user's PSN status. The free update will be issued in June, until then Torne fans can argue with European and Australian PlayTV owners about whether or not their new features are better than Facebook integration while the U.S. sits out like the ginger kid of a previous marriage it is.

DANG. You just called an entire country ginger.
@SolidSnake Only WE can use that word.
@SolidSnake That was probably the funniest thing I've ever read on Engadget. Strike that. On any yech website!!!
@SolidSnake
when the f*** do we get this feature, ever since i heard about it and i am sick and tired of waiting, ugh come on i wanna record hd shows on my ps3
@SolidSnake We prefer the term "Day Walkers"
@chicagowiseguy
best reply ever
Wish this was in the US, seems awesome.
@Howell Yeah, and we wish we had Hulu.
@Alphathon If I could give you Hulu for one of these, I would. Hulu's max 480P res vs. PS3 DVR (and no more monthly DVR charges from the cable company) and 720p+? I think that sounds like a win-win.
@John D but how would you receive it? You say no more monthly DVR charges from the cable company, but if it were a cable DVR you'd still have the charges surely. Now it it were an over-the-air DVR like this and PlayTV then that might work, but I was under the impression that over-the-air TV wasn't all that good/prominent in the US. Seriously though, you guys over there get screwed for TV - the network system and loads of local/regional providers just causes problems, so it likely just wouldn't work in the US.
Here in the UK we have free O-T-A digital TV (Freeview), Freesat and Freesat-from-Sky; free satellite services, Virgin Media (paid cable) and Sky (paid satellite). That's it. The lack of competition would seem like a bad thing, but in practice it's not since the free competition keeps the prices for the paid services down. DVRs are available for all services (even the free ones) but the ones for the free services only cost a one-off fee, the Sky one is part of the service (I think) so is part of the standard subscription, and the Virgin one costs, but a very small amount (£5(~$7.50)/month; free if you have the biggest channel package). The downside I suppose is that most of our internet is ADSL, so 8Mbps max (I get ~1Mbps) since if you want cable internet you have to get Virgin, and it's only available in cities.
@John D
just buy one of those hauppauge pvr and you can record from your cable box on your pc, playable on ps3 (1 hr HD video on single layer dvd-r)
With sony and google playing nice with GoogleTv heres hoping a Google Tv app that will be added to the Ps3's video bar.
@GuardianAli
that can't really work, there's no google tv 'app' it's a version of the whole android OS. which would mean exploitability, which sony just removed from the ps3 in terms of the install other OS option. besides the fact that i don't think the ps3 has enough ram to emulate android, it's not designed to multitask afterall, it's a gaming machine/media centre.
so unfortunately, no, it probably won't happen :(
@safe travels What do u mean PS3 is not design for multitask?? PS3 can perform multitask pretty well 8 core of SPE and you say it cant multitask. and what do you mean PS3 does not has enough RAM?? PS3 256MB XDR ram is well enough. My droid only have 256 RAM and 512 ROM. PS3 has more raw power than my droid ever does. what do you mean it can't.
First of all, think outside the box, what we see is an Android OS presentation, I'm sure with the right agreement, Sony can extract the vital components and bring it to the PS3.
If you are talking about hardware limitation, droid has more technical limitation that PS3 does.
@safe travels
It's seriously not difficult for Sony and Google to produce an app on the XMB.
@1mc well said man. The PS3 is a power house. The airforce uses them for supercomputers for Pete's sake. LOL
Dude, slap an Google TV into it and it will sell Awesome. Also for god sake, use Chrome browser as PS3 browser, Droid Chrome can run better than PS3 Browser. Since you guys partner so well, slap that in as well man
I'm not a ginger!
But yeah, I do feel like one right about now.
If this saw a US release, it would convince me to buy a PlayStation 3. It would replace my Blu-ray player, be a DVR, and play the two games I might want for PlayStation. If only it had backwards compatibility...
Some day we'll get the cool stuff, America.
This really makes me want to live in japan....except for the whole speaking japanese thing
torne is nice.....i already set to to record the uefa champions league final in full HD since i'll be sleeping that time. But it would be nice to have that update because the recorded files are BIG'!!!!....hurry sony!
Frankly, I am not so sure about the future of PS3 being the home entertainment center any more. See, the Google TV thing announced today seems to suggest that SONY is giving up the dream of PS3 being the hub of our home entertainment.
@Richard Lawlor - the comment system sucks in IE. I have to go into IE7 compat mode for the rating\reply buttons to work, and the 'Add Your Comment' button is invisible unless you remove the #addCommentButton's CSS height tag (it's set to 0px - thank god for IE8 dev tools). Just thought you'd want to know.
@John D Who uses IE?
@10nisman94 inevitably, someone always says that. corporate computer = standard image. one which includes IE.
It's a real disappointment that the the UK and japan get TV on the PS3 and the USA get zippo.
Come on Sony pull you finger out it should work with OTA at the very least!!
@iPaul Tell that to the US consumer sheep that prefer paying Tivo and cable companies for their own DVR. The reason this thing won't be released in the US is the same reason why we don't see blu-ray recorders in the US.
@pika2000 i'd settle for a consumer friendly dvd recorder at this point. wtf happened to digital recorders after VHS!!! we are such sheep.
"start watching a program and fast forward/reverse while it's still recording", but how does it get the 1.2GW????? I can see the show before it's aired??? now, I'll buy that.
@xtasi Sure, it does everything... Including magic...
...oh wait... thats another company...
When euro fall to pieces, cool stuff will come to America.
On the other hand, ps3 is long dead in us territory....
@trihy
Troll much?
PS3 is selling on par mostly with X360 in US. Most of PS3 exclusives have been in TOP10 software sales when they are released.
Heck, some analyst even predicted that X360 version of XIII will sell more units in the US - but guess what? He was wrong. He was very wrong.
@Akuma Fanboy too much? Look at the april hardware sales. Ps3 sold more than 360 three or four months on a 4 year 'war'
Andorid on the ps3 would be sick! With this google tv /w xmb omg i think i just jizzed!
I'm sure Sony would love to sell this in America. I, mean, why would they not want to? the US has the highest number of couch potatoes in the world.
It's the cable companies that are likely keeping this from being sold in stores.
another sign the US has lost...
we are so crippled by the Cable monopolies, the Oil giants, the petty useless politicians, too may lawyers...
DUDE what are all those cables for???
I have a Play TV, and I also have a dual tuner DVR that can burn a DVD. My last DVD Recorder lasted 4 years before dying from chronic overwork. My next one will most likely be a Blu-ray recorder. Am I correct in assuming these things are not available in the US? If not, does it seem likely that you will ever get them? If not, you are missing out. Don't be too sad, you get your stuff at much better prices than down here in Australia.
