We've known RIM has had a
WebKit-based browser in its rear pocket since Mobile World Congress, and with confirmation that
BlackBerry OS 6.0 would have traces of WebKit throughout, this discovery was simply inevitable. The
BlackBerry Bold 9800 (polarizing design and all) has just made its most interesting appearance yet, this time showing off a purported WebKit-based web browser with a trio of tabs collected up top. Never mind the fact that whoever was using this clearly wishes he / she was browsing on an iPhone -- it's the 100/100 Acid3 test result that really titillates. 'Course, that could very well be a JPEG loaded up to fool us all, but we aren't losing the faith just yet. Head on down to the source for a few more teases.
First.
Engadget, you sure are some BIG TIME Apple fanboys.
But what's new?
@KBatFLORIDA
The first to blow it, yes.
@KBatFLORIDA. Into OBLIVION you go, slave!
@Lord Vader
Gaylord vader strikes again.
And since that was my 500th comment. It will hurt 500X as much
@futurerheza No he is not, Lord Vader is amazing..
@HarolD. It's ok CommanderHarolD. The human rights activists are always trying to bring down the morale of the Empire. Luckily we have equipped our Death Star with a new improved Oblivion Ray. There will be no one to stop us this time
@Lord Vader Yeah, it works flawlessly I can't see him anymore. He was sent to the oblivion dimension.. lol
It looks so... ugly.
Either that or I've lost my taste.
@MegaJapan While it's definitely not trend setting, or going to win any fashion awards, it kinda follows blackberries design. They cater to corporate users. The device is clean, functional and looks professional.
@MegaJapan
It looks like a 9700 would if you made the whole face a screen. The 9700 is one of the nicest looking phones out there, and so this should look good in the flesh.
I'll buy.
@MegaJapan It *is* ugly! Looks like the same form factor as one of those old Palm PDA devices.
@MegaJapan
the more i see it the more i think it would be bearable to use in person
id probably rock it, but thats because i dont need to have a 'sexy' phone to fit in
@d889
Most of those sexy phones e.g. iPhone. Look like they were made for women to me.
@MegaJapan I think more important than the design (which seems to be very polarizing) is the quality of the slider. That will make it or break it for a lot of people.
@MegaJapan
not sure what RIM is planning. They had The Tour but killed it and made the BOLD CDMA+GSM and then now it looks like there about ready to shoot the strom and make it the BOLD also.that means users will be left with Bold, curve, peral. not looking to good, on selection.
I actually think the design is very cool. Best of both worlds.
@xavierpr14 I thought. I was the only one to think it doesn't look that bad
I actually like the design. Best of both worlds.
They bought that one company who was making a webkit browser for WM, it would only make sense.
What does Apple have to do with this? I clearly see 2 ipads and not iphones. Also that could be Engadgets front page, with all the Apple coverage. The Apple website and Engadgets do sell the same products. (I know engadget dosent sell stuff, except broken dreams, still waiting for a winmo client)
@Einlander Clearly you can see that is Apple's website, he simply made a joke about that. Why all the hate and you are not even commenting on the article.
Back to the subject. I like blackberry's like the bold 9700, but I dont like sliders unless they are landscape sliders.
Haha the tab is a page for apple, I get the joke (claps palms)
Blackberry already lost me and any hope I had for them when they launched the Bold 9700 and actually said the browser was a "great web experience."
@GeneralThade
agreed... I feel like they are delusional. Giving Canadians a bad name.
The thought of a Blackberry with a touchscreen (no SurePress), 9700/Bold hardware keyboard, and WebKit browser excites me. Not the best looking phone but I am definitely buying one.
Speaking of Apple, why do they have to be in every conversation. Great products, over-priced, over-hyped. We're all buying into they hype machine whenever someone mentions Apple. Enough already! Stop riding the Steve Jobs pole, people.
But on the topic... bye bye iPhone (good riddance actually!), hello BB 9800. Might get a 4G to replace my old and tired 3G until the 9800 comes out, then sell asap. This BB Slider cannot come out soon enough July or Sept seems soooo. faaaaar awaaaay.
@poppajohn Did you not look at the picture?
@Oghowie Duh. What's your point?
EDIT: You know what, the more I look at it the more I like it. Professional, slick, not futuristic yet a hint of modernity, big screen. The slide-out part needs some touch-ups though. It also doesn't look like it'll have SurePress, the top part is very thin in other screenshots. Wouldn't mind it though. I hope it has a rear camera & front facing camera to compete with the 4G though!
What a ulgy ass phone...
RIM jobs anyone?
@Lopez
Blackberry owners have been getting one for the past decade.... I think they've had enough.
i actually like that design but i don't love it. i don't even know if rim should come up with a drastic design change i love the ,,minimalistic" usability over fanciness design of a bold but with this one they didn't get that, almost brockhaus like design i used to love.
With all honest, I've been on the BB for over 3 years now and I've already used 4 different models... and truly, even though I like the S2 more than any other, BB and RIM aren't even at the same level as the competition. The phone is extremely slow... every install and uninstall you have to reboot which is a full reboot for iphone owners (so about 6 minutes) and you have to keep waiting for it to un freeze so you can work... when my contract is over, I'm def. moving to either Android or iPhone if it comes to VZW.
@zrome oh i don't run in this kind of problems as bad as u do. i do a reboot once a day( bold 2)the system itself is running smoothly. but i'm using the bb most of the time just to write emails, use the bbm or texting as a whole( a iphone for surfing and reading.....)
i feel better about this than the storm and 2 already
This is a very fartworthy phone! Verizon please!
I'm not sure if the web browsing experience is going to be any better than it is.
I guess we need to see some video of how it works out.
Gawd help me I think I like it.
Blackberry has had a 100/100 acid3 test browser for a long time already, the Bolt browser. I gave it up for Opera 5 mini.
have to see
A bit bulky for my tastes. They could learn a thing or two from the Pre, but still a nice handset. I think it's a little weird how curved the bottom of the unit, but I'm sure you'd get used to it. Regardless, I give RIM props. Good job.
I want it! Does anyone know when this will be released, will this be available on tmobile?
