LG Ally release pushed back a week for reasons unknown

You remember those Android 2.1-powered LG Allys that were supposed to go on sale with Big Red earlier this week? Yeah, well, they didn't, and Verizon's site is still showing them as pre-orders. We're not sure what's going on there, but pre-orders are being extended through the 26th with sales commencing on the 27th; folks that have already pre-ordered the phone are apparently getting emails explaining the situation and letting them know that they'll be "the first to receive the phone upon initial availability on or after May 27th." The "or after" part there seems to be giving them a loophole in case they need another delay -- so this could be a last-minute software issue, supply problems, some sort of wacky marketing stunt, or a stunning heist involving the theft of every Ally that has been imported to the United States thus far. Your guess?

Maybe there upgrading it to 2.2! Maybe LG wants to be first for once...lol. But really...this IS odd.

I doubt it is 2.2, the Nexus One didn't even get it yet. Usually there is a lot of testing by of the manufacturer and the carrier before updating a phone. Plus I don't think LG has ever even done an Android update for any of their other Android phones (at least over in the UK).
I blame Apple.

If they were stolen, they would probably be on ebay right now
Final version of Froyo hasn't been completed yet so it can't be that. Plus, there's typically extensive testing before an OS update is applied.

no final version of FroYo hasnt been released to any phone, or dropped to AOSP, doesn't mean its not ready for release.
The real question is, who would buy this instead of a Droid or Droid Incredible?

A usable keyboard.
All I ask for is a new phone with the power of the Incredible or EVO, but with a keyboard as nice as this Ally.
(and before you even bother, the Droid's keyboard is worthless)

The droids keyboard is great.
It makes no sense to me why people hate it.

to make things clear. i would buy this over the droid strictly for the nicer keyboard...
lol they ad this phone as the iron man 2 phone. i was kind of disapointed as i learned it doesn't have a transparent multitouch display then i read the specs and thought that wouldn't even be enough advanced for mr stark's electric shaver....

Well, considering they are two weeks behind on Incredible orders, this is no surprise. They probably need to get the incredibles out first before they can handle more shipments.
@brettlewis they don't have Incredibles to ship out. Samsung has a shortage on the touch screens they're making for HTC. Some stores haven't even been able to order any in yet and we're closing in on a month since launch.

@ewlung exactly, and moreover Lg doesnt have any custom skin apart from some crappy Iron Man shit, which will work on 2.2 anyway. I think we will see it, it should be easy for 5-6 engineers over 3 days if they work their butts off.
I don't know why LG is bothering with this one. Doesn't impress.
Who in his right mind would by this phone on verizon when they have an Incredible other option on version as well ?

If shipments to customers have been delayed does that mean that Verizon stores don't have any demo units to check out either??
The reviews for this phone have ranged from OK-to-lackluster, and while the hardware might be 1/2 a step behind the fastest hardware, many of us might still be willing to give up some speed for the luxury of a good keyboard.
If only some phonemaker - I'm looking at you HTC - would figure out that a fast phone with a good keyboard would sell like hotcakes.

@Hazdaz Thats actually a marketing ploy. If they make something that everyone wants or the best, then people will be hesitant to buy newer stuff down the line. That's why there's no such thing as a perfect phone. Sales would jump in the short run but the long run would fail.

I think you are reading a little too much into it. I don't think it's some kind of "conspiracy", but lack of knowledge and understanding of the market/demographic/user-base.
There is no such thing as a "perfect" phone because what is supposedly perfect today is outdated next week. Look at something like the EVO.... today it's the King of the Androids, but give it 6 or 12 months and it's going to be considered mid-range (or even low-end). That's already happening with the N1. There is absolutely no fear that a high-powered phone with a good keyboard will stop future sales because there will always be new features added to upcoming phones.

Maybe they're deciding to take it off the market, since, you know, there currently exists a better phone for the price.
Hoping for 2.2 on this thing is stupid, because N1 users haven't all gotten it yet, and they will be the first ones.
