Confirmed: Apple's next iPhone will have video chat, feature to be shown in ads directed by Sam Mendes
Well this can't be tremendously surprising. Apparently American Beauty director Sam Mendes is in the process of putting together a series of commercials for Apple's next iPhone, which according to a tipster is being referred to internally as the Mammoth / N90. Besides that tip (with a handful of juicy details), a trusted source has confirmed to us that the ads will feature at least one spot where a mother and daughter are having a video chat conversation using the new front-facing camera that's been spied on the face of that iPhone floating around Vietnam and Northern California. Adding weight to this story, a cursory search on Twitter revealed that there's at least one actress who is up for a role in the "f***ing apple commercial" in New York, and another fellow who is auditioning for spots in California. We don't know much more than that, but we're fairly confident that this confirms video chat is coming to the next iPhone, and that that said iPhone isn't very far from our grasp. Remember folks, June 7th is just a kiss away.

Wow, when will their head be on a platter for this announcement
@AlienSix
I was thinking the same thing! I guess shes definitely not getting the part anymore..LOL!
@AlienSix
not least because she doesn't seem to enjoy the job placement
"fucking apple commercial" spoken by the actor in the commercial, haha, classic. top marks i say. :D
@SPENone
LOL she's definitely cut...and may even be sued if she signed an NDA.
@DoctarPeppar
She should just wave goodbye slowly to that job offer.. Cuz that Jobs guy, he's a vindictive guy, I'll tell ya.
@engadget
THIS SAYS NOTHING TO ME ABOUT MY LIFE.
@futurerheza
Well, nobody has come up with a solution that people actually use, at least on mobile devices. The floor is still open to anyone that can produce a slick, easy-to-use implementation. Guess who's probably going to have that :)
@SolidSnake
Jobs is downright CRAZY...he's the sole reason why Woz walked away from Apple...he couldn't take it anymore. I can't imagine what it's like to work there -- they forbid you from blogging or talking about work to your friends, so I've heard...it's like Jobs thinks Apple is the CIA or something, lmao..
@ebgolfin
Guess you haven't been to europe or asia in the past 5 years.
They have had video calling there forever.
It works fine...but it's based on an old standard.
What Apple brings to the table isn't necesarilly the hardware itself but (most likely anyways) a global service to accomplish the task of video calling over cellular data (hopefully won't be limited to wifi?).
@DoctarPeppar @AlienSix
Why is hear head on a platter and why should she be sued? She simply stated that she is auditioning for a Apple commercial. She didn't write for what or what the plot was. Apple does new commercials all the time. So what's the secrecy?
@SeeKo
I said *if* she signed an NDA she would be.
@AlienSix
10 bucks says the new commercial features this chick video chatting with the most beautiful floating plastic bag you've ever seen
@DoctarPeppar
Woz resigned from most of his duties at Apple after he was in a plane crash in '81. Read up before posting.
@AlienSix What's with her strong language? The amount of f***ing airplay the commercial's gonna get, she should be excited. Unless I'm missing something?
@AlienSix She's not necessarily in Apple's bad graces. Neither Twitter post features the world "iPhone" at all. I mean, I don't trust Apple not to overreact, but it's not really called for.
@safe travels
She must be enjoying her unemployment checks a little too much...
@dorothymantooth
If you have watched the movie pirates of silicon valley, it shows why he really left. The plane crash was part of it, but he could have came back to apple when he was healthy again -- but he didn't.
He could not take Jobs' ego anymore, and he could not stand how he was treating the employees and tearing the company apart. This is the same reason why Skulley fired Jobs.
@naashak Honestly, if Engadget has a strong iPhone bias, I'm not seeing it. It seems to me that Engadget will just report on news of anything relevant, and the iPhone just so happens to be relevant to a lot of people. A lot of people who come to this site could care less about the Evo 4G or the Droid Incredible, and when it comes to phones, all they want to hear about is Steve Jobs' baby. To their credit, I believe Engadget does a great job catering to those people, and to people who either want to hear about other things amongst the iPhone news or people who just have no interest in the iPhone at all. Look at Engadget's Evo 4G coverage, and then go look at Gizmodo's. Gizmodo is an example of a strong bias, since they hardly cover any phone without an Apple logo on the back. At least Engadget gives everything an equal oppurtunity.
Sorry for the comment hijacking, but here's that girl in the first picture

@ebgolfin
I'm actually somewhat inclined to agree... but mass video calling? in AT&T's current state?...................
Did you hear that just now? a cell tower just exploded from testing
@MrPacMan36
Nice find. She's done for.
@DoctarPeppar
Nope, no I haven't. Here in America nobody uses video chat. I thought that was implied but clearly it didn't go over well.
Video chat discussions always go this way. Everyone says it's worthless, and then you have somebody that just HAS to chime in about how popular it is in Asia :)
@AlienSix Wow, Twiiter is actually useful for something... I kid. She's gone... Nice knowing her for these like i don't know 2 minutes?
@AlienSix
Someone's not getting a F***king role...
@DoctarPeppar
The Pirates of Silicon Valley was a docu-drama, based off the basis of an event but not the actual facts. After the plane crash, Woz decided that he only wanted to resume work at Apple in an engineering position, because that is the area he loved. After narrowly escaping death, he didn't want to waste the rest of his days. He still does occasional engineering work for Apple (he's on the payroll) and he was instrumental in consulting Jobs over the development of the Mac platform in '98. You can find out this through any number of recent interviews that he's done, or you can just check Wikipedia. ;-)
@DoctarPeppar
And Scully fired Jobs simply because Jobs posed a risk to his position. Steve did create a sibling-like rivalry between the Mac and Apple II teams, but that only improved the innovation of both sides. Jobs saw that Scully was treating Apple more as a business than an engine for invention, and was planning to ax him, but Scully caught wind and used his influence to push out Jobs.
@AlienSix
who the f even wants video chat?
@skyblaze It's anyone's guess how AT&T's towers could handle the bandwidth hog that video conferencing is.
*boom!*
@AlienSix I dont know what's the big deal with front-facing cameras on cellphones for video conferencing? HTC EVO is making a big deal and the iPhone is making the biggest deal.
My 3 year old Sony Ericsson P1i has a front facing camera.
@skyblaze
People text because they don't want to actually talk via voice. What would make you think that they actually want a close-up of someone else's face?
I would use it. But then again, I'm a nerd. And so are most people here.
@ebgolfin It's not popular in Asia either.
@Katoejoe
ughhh dude did android really have to get pulled into this??
@Mike10010100
And... what if you want to voice-chat with someone... and they don't? Imagine you call your friend:
Person 1: "Hello?"
Person 2: "Wanna voice-chat?"
Person 1: "Ummm... why can't we just talk? We can have a conversation without looking into each other's eyes, ya know..."
And remember... Person 1 answered the phone by putting the phone up to his ear. Now, he's gotta take it down, activate some software or something... and hope it stays connected.
Luckily, AT&T supports voice and data at the same time. And that will come into play here... because the call originated on the voice network... then will have to seamlessly transition over to the 3G data network for the video.
It just seems like a lot of hassle for something that no one will use...
@SeeKo Because Apple is a bunch of dicks led by an enormous prick. Not why she should be sued, but why she will be sued.
@DoctarPeppar
She's never going to get to audition for Apple again. Apple makes everyone sign an NDA. I had to sign one for Sprint, the other day.
@MrPacMan36
I can see her now in the commercial on a videochat with her mom: "mom, I got the F***ing job!"
@Katoejoe
Relevant doesn't mean one starts pasting every fiddling news items for any iThing with the word "Breaking News". In case you didn't notice today we even had Jobs appearance on WWDC classified as "Breaking News". Whom did they think was going to appear on WWDC - Mickey Mouse?! I am all for fair coverage but this is not what shows up on this blog.
Moreover, interesting isn't it that Engadget simply deleted my comment (the one you responded to) even though it has no profanity or personal attack - I guess we cant have anybody criticize the Big J and his company esp. since he might take offence and administer a spanking to whoever owns Engadget. Ofcourse its perfectly alright to say the same stuff about other companies but for the holy "A" the rules I guess are different.
@AlienSix What's the point of blurring the names? You can just search twitter for that tweet and find it if you want to know . . .
@AlienSix Criteria: You better ****ing not tell anyone about the iPhone 4G.
@Billy I get it, one person will be in California and the other in Vienam.
@AlienSix
the announcement of a commercial? ...
*shakes head
@AlienSix
Well she didn't capitalize apple, so there is still the chance she is auditioning for a fruit commercial. She did capitalize F***ing though...
@AlienSix
Bad move Steve, apple fanboys hate deeply video conference, thousand of comments support this
@DoctarPeppar .. I have LIVED in UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and Australia. I have never, ever seen one person doing a video call.
So I don't know WTF you are talking about.
@safe travels
I think she is saying fucking a positive way, if that makes sense. In a kind of "fucking A" type way. Like, I'm in a fucking *Apple* commercial - can you believe that shit?
@Engadget "Remember folks, June 7th is just a kiss away"
And June 4th is closer. Counting my days for the EVO!
@taligent
Yawwn. I for one have enjoyed using video calls on my mobile in the UK for about 3 years now..
@DoctarPeppar Yah, here in Asia, many people still reacts.. iPhone? Ah yes only in USA. Hopefully, they will talk about that guy Hogan who found that infamous iPhone of gizmodo. http://j.mp/iphone-stealer-impressions
@AlienSix Her Twitter profile has been deleted :)
@DoctarPeppar
The 'Pirates of Silicon Valley' is not gospel, and actually it was way off in some instances. I remember when that movie came out, and the guy who wrote it admitted that he wasn't even into computers or tech, but then got intrigued the the business of it all & wrote the story. It was one man's version of stories you can read about elsewhere, with different interpretations. I noticed that movie has been referenced before. It was a made-for-TV movie, not a history lesson.
For a better reference, I suggest you watch 'Triumph of the Nerds: The Rise of Accidental Empires' by Robert X. Cringely
Also, Noah Wiley is not really Steve Jobs either.
