The
Core i5-540M is still quite rare on the ground, but we're hearing word that Intel is already prepping the assembly line for its successor. A new Core i5-580M has been dug up by the sleuths at
Notebook Italia, who say it'll run at a default 2.66GHz and ramp up to 3.33GHz via
Turbo Boost when needed. Those numbers compare favorably to the 2.53GHz and 3.06GHz of the 540M, and if Intel and company get their timing right,the 580M should be stealing some of that Core i7 thunder just in time for the back to school shopping rush. Won't hear any complaining from us if that turns out to be the case.
Im absoutley flabbergasted.....
@TehSilentWolf I'm completely thunderstruck.....
wat
Sounds perfect for a m11x :). Then it could be a viable option to the Sony Vaio Z!
@BoxBabaX
The Core i3s, i5s, and i7s are all going to be ULV types.
The i5-580m probably draws too much power :(.
You have to adore Intel for the "Turbo Boost". K.I.T.T. must be sooo proud. :-)
@SeeKo I wish there was a 3.3 GHz one than can turbo boost to 4GHz
I guess now I'll have to wait before I upgrade my laptop. Thanks a lot Intel
I'm skipping 32nm, my moore's law 8th sense says the next refresh will actually be worth the upgrade.
@dds1043
Wow. 8?
Let me guess. Your 6th is seeing dead people. lol
But what is your 7th?
That would be babbling nonsense.
@Bahumbug Repugnant gas. ;)
Still waiting for that dreamy 2.8 Ghz, (Turbo 3.4) processor on my laptop.
cross my fingers
@eternity0022
I know, I want that super-light Toshiba laptop with the Core i7 to get announced so I know how much to mortgage my home for.
@Dante of the Inferno
Now that's extreme. Mortgage a house just for a laptop. Damn I guess I gotta put my forehead up for ads and make some serious cash and then buy me a sweet lappy!
Meanwhile, in a little house in the UK ones laptop is a measly 1.49GHz, hopefully getting a new one with Intel's i5 for my birthday!!
I've been searching my perfect laptop for quite a while now, and not finding one that's powerful & affordable enough. The affordable ones look like crap. The pretty ones are at the $2K price range, for a comparable spec.
Now it gets even harder.
hmmmmm my i5-520M might have to have an accident so i can upgrade to one of these babies
This is exactly why I'm sticking with overclocked c2q for now- I remember jumping to core duo only to be pissed about core 2. Next spring I'll reevaluate.
The reason I don't buy these Intel chips not because of their price but their onboard video chip really sucks bad in terms of temperature. Now they even cramp the chip inside the CPU and left me no choice, so I guess AMD is the camp I am moving on to...
Isn't this essentially a re-branded i7-620m? It has the same clock speeds, and the same turboboost speed. Or is the tdp lower?
Whatever happened to 4.5 GHz or 8 GHz? According to standard growth curves, we should be in 12 GHz-land by now.
I want my 20 G's!
