A report over on
Digital Daily this morning reveals something that may not come as much of a surprise -- people on other carriers (in this instance, Verizon) want the
iPhone. Recent research out of Morgan Stanley shows there is "significant" demand for Apple's cellular delight -- with about 16.8 percent of Verizon's subscribers having "extreme interest" in the product compared to 7.5 percent in the overall population. What does this mean? It means that, if given the chance (i.e. if the
iPhone came to Verizon), about 17 percent of current users would switch. That's a pretty high number, to be sure, and Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty estimates that such a deal could move around 7 or 8 million iPhones annually. Of course, all of this comes from an analyst, and it's based on an unscientific survey, so take it with a grain of salt. Still, what's the deal, Steve? We know you love money -- make it happen!

monopoly: A situation in which a single company or group owns all or nearly all of the market for a given type of product or service. By definition, monopoly is characterized by an absence of competition - which often results in high prices and inferior products.
did you mean the iphone policies or windows?
Meh iPhone. I would never go back to it after using my rooted Droid. The downgrade in features would be too immense. It would be like a PC gamer switching from Windows to Mac xD.

Hhahahahahhhaha
Somebody needs to unplug from the Engadget Ustream chat
@hated one
After some phony marketshare numbers a while back, and now this, they're going to be freaking out in early June.
What Verizon needs to communicate to its customers is how most of the Android phones they currently offer are levels above better than the iphone. They need to communicate how the iphoney is levels inferior to current levels of Android and WebOS. That way Verizon can leave steve sitting on his plastic high horse with ATT. A marriage made in insanity. Friends don't let friends become ilemmings
If they are so "extremely interested" in iphone why don't they just go over to ATT and get one.
@hated one
I know... I hope SJ grinds the shit out of them (on their contractual terms) for the bullshit ad.
The iPhone isn't compatible with Verizon's cell network at all. Verizon would have to offer GSM tower cell service to get the iPhone, like what happened in Canada. That is why there is the iPhone on more than one carrier in Canada.
I do appreciate the iPhone for spawning a phone war and pushing innovation.
Fact: the iphone WAS the best phone on the market since it came out.
a year ago (even six months ago) if someone asked whats the best phone OS out, people would mostly say iphone. and if they asked whats the best phone hardware out, they would most likely say iphone
BUT THINGS HAVE CHANGED. now the iphone is no longer the best. you can say its ARGUABLY the best, which i think many of you are saying, but it use to JUST BE THE BEST.
Now android offers just as much if not more then even the next update of the iphone os. and hardware wise the EVO is gonna be just as good, if not better then the iphone; and be out before the iphone
I recently upgraded from the droid to droid incredible. i was blown away with how great the droid was, but if you have an upgrade on verizon the incredible is 10 times smoother and polished then the droid.
I wish that verizon truly showed its consumers how the incredible really comares to the iphone. its just as smooth and powerful. with extras you dont need to root your phone for.
yes the next iphone will be better then my incredible, but good thing for google, android phones dont just come out once a year. i will only have to wait a few months to have a new android phone on verizon to have better hardware then the new iphone, with 2.2 already being better software.
whether apple consumers like it or not, or whether they want to admit it or not, android has truly caught up, especially with the incredible. and is advancing at a faster rate then the iphone. if its caught up now, what where do you think google is gonna be in a year?
@carlosriosness
Pssst.... Apple is suing HTC for infringing on 20 of their iPhone patents. iPhone wannabe's, time to meet your maker.
@Wesscoast
yeah, and? that doesnt mean that apple is still the best. lol. other companies are still innovating. I love my htc, but maybe its moto that makes the next best android. (the droid 2 is rumored to be pretty good)
sorry apple fans, iphones run of number 1 is over... but it was a good one.
(ps im not saying apple sucks or that they will never be the best again, im just saying they arent HANDS DOWN the best, apple CAN NOT SAY the have the best phone anymore).
@Wesscoast
Psssst.... Apple is suing everyone. Next they are going to patent blinking and we're all in trouble...
@carlosriosness
Amen. Iphone is simply the anomoly of history and will go down as the gimmick that fooled a nation by doing less, being an inferior product but was able to lure people through marketing. Go beyond that to how terrible the warranty is on the iphone, what a pain in the a$$ itunes is to use and people will see how unfortunate it is to be an iphoney lemming. I just feel bad for people who buy the iphone now without really taking the time to see that there are far better products out there offered by far more supportive companies.
@Thor e
All mobile phone companies are suing each other. Lawyers win!
Of that 17.8percent how many of those are valready vzw subs? Not all of them would "switch to verizon"
Since when is 16% extreme interest?
i can say one thing if Verizon does get the iphone next year i plan to make the switch all this news make me think really hard about it. also if they do i hope that apple doesn't let them mess with the specs like Verizon did with the phone i did because they really gimped the phone that i got from them i want the iphone in all its glory.
As well they should be because nothing compares to a jail broken IPhone.
