Hearing Google say that
Android 2.2 would be filtering out to the Nexus One
in short order was no huge shock -- after all, it's Google's
first smartphone. But for those who purchased Motorola's first heavy-hitter since the RAZR, it looks as if they'll be close behind in enjoying the spoils. According to a Motorola spokesperson quoted at
Slashgear (full statement is past the break), the company is expecting the original Droid to get Android 2.2 "in the near future," though he / she wouldn't go so far as to provide specifics beyond that. Better still, the same person stated that
Motorola is excited about Froyo in general, and it's "looking forward to integrating it on [the firm's] Android-based devices as [the software] is made available." We hate to read too deeply into anything, but "device
s" sure gets our digits tingling.
[Thanks, Alex]
"We're excited to see Google's news of the next version of the Android operating system and look forward to integrating it on our Android-based devices as it's made available to the open source community."
While I can't comment on specifics, we do expect DROID by Motorola users will receive Android 2.2 as a software upgrade in the near future."
@JONNNathannn
The significant hardware differences between the Moto DROID and other Android handsets caused the delay in rolling out v2.1. With those lessons learned, v2.2 shouldn't be quite as delayed.
Now that they've worn out the word "soon", Motorola has resorted to using the phrase "in the near future". I half expect to see this update hit my Droid in 4-6 months. Any earlier and I'll believe it when I see it.
Hopefully Motorola can get a good solid update to VZW for testing quickly after the source is released. If it drags on in to Q4, I doubt VZW has much motivation to do testing on it since the Droid's successor is due out then.
@Fuzzball
There are a lot of droid and milestone owners out in the wild (both US and europe). If each were to chip in $1, write a cheque and shove it to Motorola and tell them "we rather pay to see shit get done, punctually", because from the way I see the counter-arguments, it always has been about the money.
Still waiting on EPE54B Nexus one Froyo upgrade here =\
Oh, I sympathize with you all =]
Like we haven't heard this before...
Re: the painful staggered updates with Droid devices
I believe Moto's Droid received a staggered upgrade schedule for the 2.1 update was Verizon's attempt to avoid a 3G network overload. Keep in mind that the Android updates are over the air (OTA) compared to, say, the iPhone's iTunes updates, which occur with a USB cable. The carrier did not want too many users simultaneously downloading large amounts of data, compromising their network.
When Motorola releases the update for the Droid (as opposed to the Google's Nexus One, for instance), is a separate issue. The staggered release for individual Droid users, however, is an attempt at avoiding network overloads.
I'm almost positive it's gonna take tbem a while to get this out. Gotta love being rooted, there's already some developers working on it for their custom roms.
So... I guess I will be buying a Motorola Droid after all. I'd wait around for the Incredible to get back in stock, but why wait?
As long as the Droid gets 2.2 by August, I'll be satisfied.

Right, in the near future? 2012? We all know the broken promises again and again... please don't make anymore promises until you guys sort out all the problem and then surprise us with a confirm date for upgrade..
I'm also a happy user of the Milestone. It's great as anything other than a Phone. I've had it for about a week and find the OS to be great. Ofcourse it has it's flaws, but I knew that. Before I got it I was looking at both the N900 and the Milestone. Both have a fairly new OS so I thought I'd try either one. Also from the reviews I read here, the Droid/Milestone seemed to be the best one out there. Especially since I had to use it as an everyday phone for work.
Unfortunately exactly that part is pretty bad about it. Calls being dropped non-stop. Incoming calls where I can't hear the other person or the other way around, that sort of stuff. I can accept if this happens now and again, but I actually find myself cheering if I finish a phonecall without problems. Something I did not have with even the cheapest of Nokia's or Sony Erricsons.
It defeats the purpose of having this device a phone and the painful truth is that a lot of people adviced against me buying another Motorola. But no, after years and years of advicing against buying a Motorola I thought they had changed, made an effort to get back on top, but unfortunately I am now stuck with a phone that looks great on paper, but is unusable in real life. I actuallly regret not buying the N900 for it's stability, and that is saying something.
Hope the update fixes some of these problems, I couldn't care less about the extra functions, just make it work and I'm happy.
ADVANCED TASK KILLER!!!

Sweet, my app is in that screenshot :D
For phones running stock Android, there's absolutely zero excuse for it to take months to release 2.1 or 2.2.
The only thing holding them back is pure laziness.
@Johnny Rockets
Yeah, I actually don't understand why wouldn't the Droid update to 2.2 same time as NX1, doesn't it run stock Android? And if it's a matter of the network pushing the update, isn't part of the idea of Android, that if you're running stock, the updates are OTA direct from Google?
Still, the manual update is almost trivial. I mean, if someone really wants 2.2 on Droid, even without much technical knowledge, one could totally do it themselves.
I just want an exact date
I still love my Droid, and this update will only sweeten the deal.
whenever I see a screenshot of Android, I'm reminded of my old sony ericsson w810i. I mean, can't the update the icons and menu with a little shading or something to make it at least look a little nicer?
Here's hoping I can get the update on my Milestone all the way up here in Canada.
Get 2.2 now :)
