N-trig's Digital Pencil plays pen and fingertip roles, claims mastery of both
It's hard to justify rolling into summer school with just an electronic wooden ruler, but pairing that with one of N-trig's new Digital Pencils just seems like a match made in detention heaven. The company responsible for pushing out that snazzy DuoSense technology back in 2008 is hitting back with yet another digital writing instrument, with this particular one designed to work with multitouch devices. Being a part of the DuoSense family, the battery-powered device can actually act as either a fingertip (you know, for those capacitive screens) or a digitizer pen, enabling it to play nice with a smorgasbord of third-party peripherals. The company claims that the two-pronged approach will give users far more flexibility, and the DuoSense software identifies the position of the Pencil and the pressure level, removing the need for an excitation coil within the DuoSense digitizer. Curiously enough, there's no public mention of a price, but we're guessing it'll sell for far more than you're willing to pay here in just a few days.
N-trig DuoSense® Pen Solutions, Bringing a More Personal Element to Hands-on Computing®
Pen Solutions Are Key Components of DuoSense® Hands on Computing® Combination Offering Users Choice in How They Connect with Their Computers
KFAR SABA, Israel & AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--N-trig today announces the general availability of its battery-powered Digital Pencil™, an integral part of the DuoSense® pen solution combined with capacitive true multi-touch.
"The compelling combination of pen and true multi-touch offers users the freedom to select the input method of their choice, whether it be the pen or their fingertips, when interacting directly with their slate, tablet, notebook or other computing device"
N-trig's DuoSense pen solutions are comprised of the Electrostatic battery-less pen, and the battery-powered Digital Pencil™ and N-trig holds multiple related patent applications for these solutions. Both pens correspond to the same unique hardware, complementing the inherent true multi-touch capabilities. The DuoSense pen offers the return of the lost art of handwriting and together with the true multi-touch solution opens up a whole new world of personal choice for the user in deciding how to interact with their computing devices.
"The compelling combination of pen and true multi-touch offers users the freedom to select the input method of their choice, whether it be the pen or their fingertips, when interacting directly with their slate, tablet, notebook or other computing device," said Amichai Ben-David, CEO, N-trig. "The choice between either or both pen and multi-touch provides users with new levels of flexibility and personalization for a more natural and Hands-on computing experience."
The pen combined with the true multi-touch capabilities suits a variety of activities whether at work or at leisure. The DuoSense pen offers the comfort of jotting down an idea as soon as it occurs, requires no use of paper, and results in a more efficient, productive and mobile computing environment. Students can easily take notes in class, children can play games, artists and designers can make sketches or draw directly on their computer screens and the corporate user can answer emails or work on a spreadsheet as they move between meetings. The possibilities are limitless, as more and more application developers understand the power of the pen and multi-touch combination - for example, picture a unique way of sending personalized handwritten notes on Facebook, or even the fun of playing Farmville by drawing in your own crops or scarecrows.
N-trig's DuoSense pen solutions include:
* Electrostatic pen - An integral part of the digitizer, maintenance free and therefore ideal for the enterprise market. Using a conductive capacitor that is integrated as part of the pen, it connects to an electromagnetic field generated by an excitation coil in the digitizer. The frequencies of the conducted electromagnetic waves are controlled by the computer system, which enables a smooth handwriting experience.
* Digital PencilTM - A wireless power-efficient electronic pen, suitable for long life battery use. The DuoSense software identifies the position of the Pencil and the pressure level, removing the need for an excitation coil within the DuoSense digitizer and can be used either as an integral part of the solution or as an optional after-market accessory, enabling OEMs to offer system upgrades, making the Digital Pencil ideal for the consumer market.
The pen capabilities provide new levels of accuracy and precision, and a more personal and intimate approach to computing, ideally suited to today's fast-paced, on-the-go lifestyle. The pen will always have a place in translating thoughts into immediate expression, providing people with a strong and effective tool to write down their story, give directions or even play games. The pen provides a whole new approach, whether at school, at home or the office, resulting in higher sales for OEMs as a result of noticeable user gratification and a more fun, natural and intuitive Hands-on experience.

Niche.
@tobsmonster2 I love how they wrote "great work!" pointed at the largest downward trend on the chart. I can't believe that no one in their marketing realized this since you would think that marketers have to use charts like that on a daily basis.
Vry niche, but never underestimate the power of the pen.
Nobody ever claimed the finger was mightier than the sword.
@Kamalot
you can just cut the finger off with the sword! you hear that Steve, fuck off with your finger only world... fingers are only good for orgies... hahahah
@Kamalot YEA! Nokia can now make more capacitive screen devices
So this works on any capacative screen then?
@Bjorn
no it works only on n-trig screens as far as i can tell.
i think they want to make the screen it self cheaper (by omitting the excitation coil) so this technology can be used in consumer devices (as a finger touch only device) and the consumer itself can decide to buy such a pen later
@Xstream
" enabling it to play nice with a smorgasbord of third-party peripherals."
I think this means that if you have a non pressure sensitive capacitive touch screen, the pressure can be sensed by the pencil (a la N-Trig Drivers) and the location via the third party screen. Sounds like nice compliment to some of those win7 slates we have been hearing about if you ask me (ExoPC? Hanvon? HPSlate W7 version). Hopefully N-Trig will have sent its team to "drivers' ed" by then.
"pushing out that snazzy DuoSense technology back in 2008"
Yeah but in 2010 I'm still waiting for a decent driver.
@Jimbob
yeah the first drivers were pretty crappy but i can't really complain about the newest couple of drivers for my dell xt2
i don't really use paper in the university since i have this great little thing.
the only thing i would really like is pressure sensitivity support within photoshop but thats also partly adobes fault.
@Xstream Actually check out the N-trig page. In the support section they have a Win-Tab fix that supposedly gives pressure support in photoshop. Havn't tried it on my XT, you need 32-bit OS, and I am currently running 64.
@Xstream
Only last month did they finaly make a 4 point Windows 7 64bit driver for my TX2 and it's still got issues. Sometimes it does'nt work at all, othertimes if, for example you use paint and pull four fingers accross the screen it goes nuts tracking all over the place.
@Jimbob
Really? Mine is working flawlessly which came as quite the surprise after 7 months of doing battle with this darn thing. Every time i windows update I sit there and pray that my N-Trig drivers still work and each time they have. I honestly believe its because I'm not using adobe reader which many users say messed up their drivers when it would update (how this makes sense I have no idea).
Can I finally order the ipad?
strange... my comment disappeared...
Does this mean, I can finally order an iPad?
@Nice
No it didn't disappear.....
@Nice
But it will shortly ;-)
@Jimbob
They even downranked both... :) But I'm still very longing to know if this works on an iPad?
Great job!
I like how "boss" thinks that the massive decline to pre-bubble numbers is "great work."
THINK DAMNIT THINK!
You know what would be more helpful than all the links Engadget puts in the articles to their *own* (other) articles? An actual link to the product or product site.
You know what would be better than including the dry press release? An actual description of the product and what it does.
Microsoft must be in ecstasy right now: somebody promoting digital ink AND ribbon UI!
This is actually really cool. For navigating around ur gadgets I think finger use is the best, but as an artist who doesent want to carry sketchtbooks around this is beautiful. A super thin tablet plus this pen, whoop ti whoop!!! :)
they blew it
/s
@napdaddy Just wait until they announce their new task manager.
I don't care what Apple thinks about pens. I would love a tablet device that worked with a pen (stylus) for note taking.
