Samsung demos 19-inch transparent AMOLED display
We don't know what kind of display-making genii Samsung has locked away in its R&D labs, but the Korean giant is once again demonstrating a world's first. This time we're looking at a 19-inch transparent AMOLED display, taking the technology up from the 14-inch model we saw live at CES in January. The company has now achieved a 30 percent transparency on its designs, and its ideas for how they may be used are fittingly futuristic. Samsung envisions storefront advertising, à la your favorite sci-fi movie, as well as HUDs for helmets and car windshields -- maybe if TomTom can secure a supply of these screens, the dedicated GPS device can find a way to live on after all.

I don't get what's the point of making this. Even LCDs, LED LCDs and plasmas are luxurious nowadays, this is nothing much more than a conceptual show.
Transparency FTW. (at least in some scenarios)
Down side driver distruction equivalent to DUI
So, is there anything that we saw in old Star Trek episodes or movies that we're still waiting to be invented? Other than the Transporter maybe?
@16915V
Still waiting on a good power source that for one thing can power a star ship. I think the transporter is much closer to a reality.
@16915V - Phasers, photons, warp drive, impulse drive, food replicators, etc. Maybe the first starship?
What will be, if put one behinde another? and another, another another....
@Cubensis itll just be a mess if you ask me - a trippy one at that
@Cubensis
3D trasparency! I think you may have just made halogram. Patent it.
whoo-hoo yeah!!
I was envisioning this happening ever since Iron Man came out. And this looks promising. Another step towards computer screens integrated in walls and on Car windshields as well as on tables and on school desks to make school education more fun than books
Very cool. This used to be - and to an extent - still is the stuff of sci-fi. Now all we need is to combine that with a touch-screen interface and then you're into Minority Report territory. Definitely agree with engadget that you can picture this being used to project adverts on the glass displays of shop fronts. I wonder how far off we are from that moment. I'm surprised we're at this point already...
Go sammy
if they made a crisp clear 4 inch version this is surely the next steps towards the device Tony Starks uses in IRON MAN 2.
What will it take for you to make that happen samsung? Ahh yes the slick OS.
And I can expect my cell phone with photovoltaic cells behind the screen when?
Not to mention advertisments in big shopping malls and business enterprise offices! and the next gen touch screen OLED tablets and TVs
Next up from Samsung: holograms!
Augmented reality in your glasses ftw.
Your watch could be the computer and it could send info between itself and your Transparent Super AMOLED display glasses using bluetooth.
You could be looking around and have info about the whole environement around you, you could look at something in a shop and bring up a list of price comparisons...the possibilities are amazing!!
@Kromatik
...minituarised high-zoom cameras in your glasses so you can take a better look at that lady's lovely boobies.
I can't begin to express the number of times that I've sat around just wishing to the Powers That Be, how much I neeeeed my screen to be semi-transparent, just so I could dismiss that tired old high visual image quality and get items on the screen mixed in with an un-focused image of stuff across the room!
What the hell were they thinking when they made screens opaque to stuff on the other side of the desk?
I only hope that movie theaters get wind of these new developments and start installing giant windows into the parking lot so we can watch movies and keep tabs on our parked cars at the same time.
Better yet, this new tech will let me put a 27-inch monitor right behind my 24-incher, so I can easily and simply watch two things at once. Later, I'll add a 30-incher and eventually a 40, for even simpler viewing.
Now there's my idea of Rich Media!
This is unfortunetly not as cool as it looks, because when they make it fully transparent (which we all want), nothing on the screen, not even that chick will be visible :(
stack them please!!!
should be a better form of 3D than current tech, just make sure the back one isn't transparent
I would love to see them make this using a flexible, transparent material - not just on glass or whatever it is they are using.
on your car window?
So, Tony Stark's gadgets become more real everyday...
This is so stupid, worthless and useless.
BUT I STILL WANT ONE!!!!
Imagine a 3-D TV without glasses, but instead about ten transparent tv's in a row and normal one in the back; True 3-D!
Seriously though, I know the tech isn't quite there yet but I feel like a genius!
The actual content would be almost impossible to make, but if camera's could somehow capture this, it would be amazing :D
@fef714
Just read the other comments and realize my idea wasn't so original :(
But it's still AMAZING!
I hope this comes out soon, I can't wait to find out what someone's power level is
Doesn't anyone remember some of the early laptops that had transparent screens for use with those old overhead projectors? Granted they only had 16 colors but still. Thats more than enough for a HUD.
This is awesome! I want my phone with this thing on! FUTURE! Love you Samsung!
this is seriously badass
