iPhone 3G missing a 'select' button on Apple Store, might not be long for this earth
Yes, the "iPhone 3G is dead" rumors are flying fast, and our latest entry is hardly a rumor: Apple's online store currently lists the solitary 8GB iPhone 3G next to the full iPhone 3GS crop, but there's no longer a tasty "select" button below it. Usually if something's out of stock on the Apple store it will just say so, along with a projected time of delay, but with the 4G presumably around the corner this could indeed be marking the end of the 3G's last stand.

Bring on iPhone 4!!
@Snarf101 Bring it! Announced June 7th, probably be available a week later if Apple sticks with the prior releases. I'll be waiting impatiently.
"The 3G's dead, Jim."
Awwwwwwww!
@Snarf101
Just in time... for the 14-day return window! 1 week til announcement, 2 weeks til the release... noone will "buy the 3G and return when it's released and tried it"
@Snarf101, I might as well start thinking on selling my 3GS at street price and see how much left to get the 4G, unless another sexy Android device seduces me before I do.
@futurerheza
I don't really see this as a negative. For those who already have an iPhone will surely be getting the upgrade to the soon-to-be-announced iPhone, or at least I would think. And those that may(or may not) have so much cash, a 3GS would be a good alternative since they'll be able to update the software to 4.0. I see it as a win/win.
might not 'be long' for this earth as 2012 approaching?
I completely agree. The 3GS isn't a bad pick up at all. Esp. w/ the new price change in effect. But I'm kind of happy I passed on the 3GS. I can't wait to get this new iPhone. It's been toooo long. My 3G is dyin' over here.
@Snarf101
I love how it still says "Amazing price."
And then not only does it not have one, it's also not for sale.
Hey, they're giving them away?!
@KidRobotXXIV
It depends. I have a 3GS so I'm not eligible for a fully subsidized price on a new iPhone yet. I'd have to pay the full $599 or whatever. So I'm probably going to wait until I am eligible for the subsidized price.
@futurerheza crap me 2!!!!
@akbc The return window for AT&T and Apple is 30 days. Then again, it might be another 17 days between the iPhone announcement and the release of the iPhone.
@Snarf101
Please stop confusing the new iphone with a 4g phone. The iphone is not a 4g phone, att does not have a 4g network. The only 4g phone, in the world, is the htc evo 4g on sprint. Thank you.
@neoelectrex
I'm pretty sure most people who say 4g iPhone are referring to the 4th Generation iPhone which indeed it is, not a 4G network.
RIP iPhone 3G.. you've done me well these past 2 years!
@Snarf101 Yep, this just proves that the iPhone 4 is very imminent. I guess the moment of truth will be on the MWDC. Hopefully, rumors about that iPhone 4g verizon will surface. http://j.mp/4g-verizon-iphone-dream
My 3G is weeping over its impending obsolescence...
@demonicpascal Time passes so quickly doesn't it?
@demonicpascal I cannot WAIT to dump my 3G.
Kudos to taking it down early so no1 feels the buyers remorse.
The iPhone is dead. Long live the iPhone.
@Cameron
that has got to be the greatest comment ever
@Cameron
But why didn't they take it off completely. They just removed the order button. Is that so we can mourn longer? Is that a kind of obituary thing? lol
@SeeKo
Cuz its... subtle?
whos gonna buy them now anyway...
@Mll4eveR iPhones had been able to keep their market share for quite a while, all of that isn't just sales of 3GS. There will always be people who don't know that Apple is on an annual update, not sure how many, but they'll exist in one form or another.
@juanvaldez I know multiple people who bought the 3G in the last month. I told them that the new one would be out in June, and the S would be at the 3G price. None seemed to care. None were people who knew anything about the tech-world. They just wanted an "iPhone" to play Words with Friends, The Moron Test, Doodle Jump and have their kids play with Elmo's Monster Maker, and browse funny YouTube clips, and update their Facebook status. You know - the largest part of the consumers in the US.
@juanvaldez There certainly are one of my friends just got a 3GS this week before I had chance to tell him to just hold on a month for either a price cut on the 3GS or an iPhone 4.
Dude, it's been dead since 2009.
They blew it..?
so....is anyone still buying the 3g? Surprised it wasn't removed a year ago. Why do we care that a 5 year old phone isn't for sale anymore? Did Motorola stop selling the razr too?
@dswatson83
I was going to reply to point out all the inaccuracies, then I realized you're a troll!
@BigJayDogg3
what? Inaccuracies? All I did is ask if people were actually still buying the 3g since the 3gs has been out for years. I didn't make a single statement that could be inaccurate. Man, ease up...I didn't diss your beloved iphone.
@dswatson83 years? the 3GS was released last July - it hasn't even been a year. And the 3G isn't 5 years old...it's almost 2.
@dswatson83
3gs been out for years? As in, plural? Actually, it's been out for LESS than ONE year. There's an inaccuracy right there. Also, since when was the 3G a 5-year old phone? What phone was equal / better than that in 2005?
@TomSawyer Well the iPhone is just now getting multitasking and a front camera. The android phones been there done that
next
oh yes and I'm on 3gs and will be buying the next iPhone HD but when I'm into a year of my contract with whack arse AT&T in December I will be going back home to my sprint. Talk about a shytty azz network I never had this many issues with sprint in my life.
Still there on the UK site so we'll probably get it later than you yanks, just like the iPad.
@jamiepgs
O2 are out of stock of it according to the UK Apple Store, and I imagine Orange are low on stock too - even 4 months ago when my girlfriend bought a 3G, she was told that Apple aren't slowly sending them less and less of the 3G.
@Chris7197 mighta had something to do with people buying less and less of the 3G :). Before anybody barks down my comment, just saying that whether the iPhone is growing in the UK or not, no knowledge either way, obviously the sales of the 3G topped a while ago.
Did they have to take the store down to do this?
Hmmm... thought not...
Haha went into my local radio shack to buy a headphones adapter and the guy at the counter trying to slang me an iPhone 3G....really!!! Hahahaha. You a funny man sir. Bring on the 4G!!!
Give me a steep price cut on the 3G off contract and I'll pick one up. I'm talking $150 ish.
@BigJayDogg3
Bet they won't, though. :)
@AuggieBenDoggie
I'm sure they won't. And if they do, it surely won't be advertised. But I have no problem not buying one. I'll just wait for my sweetheart, the Dell Streak, to be released.
@BigJayDogg3 haha, more expensive for a used (non-contract) model these days. Also, crushing the resale market would prevent some people from counting on that money for their upgrade, which would hurt sales of their higher margin flagship device.
@juanvaldez
But many people buying the used 3G-s are from countries that don't yet have official access to the iPhone.
Wow, what a surprise! I relieve never saw that one coming. Come on Apple. What more surprises do you have? A new iPhone next month, maybe, maybe???
Although it has only been three years since the first iPhone, I see why they would like to phase out the 3G.
@bravokiloromeo Of course, could've seen this coming a mile away. No reason for them to sell 3 models. Even pretend for a second that they wanted to keep the 3G, if the 3GS is going to sell for $99 in a month, then they'd be cutting into their profit for each person who opts for a 3G in place of a 3GS because the 3GS doesn't cost that much more to make. Also, imagine if they want to even chop that $99 price down, I wouldn't be surprised to see a $0-$49 device to really put the competition on edge, I think that'd actually do even more for impulse buys and emerging markets...even though I don't expect it to happen I'd respect the move if they made it.
Wait, so they updated the store without taking it down? I thought Apple couldn't do that?
