iPhone 3G missing a 'select' button on Apple Store, might not be long for this earth
Yes, the "iPhone 3G is dead" rumors are flying fast, and our latest entry is hardly a rumor: Apple's online store currently lists the solitary 8GB iPhone 3G next to the full iPhone 3GS crop, but there's no longer a tasty "select" button below it. Usually if something's out of stock on the Apple store it will just say so, along with a projected time of delay, but with the 4G presumably around the corner this could indeed be marking the end of the 3G's last stand.

Goodbye little buddy ;_;
Hello sexy new buddy ~_^
still on the uk site:
http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=MTAyNTQzMjI
it'll be heart breaking if we have to wait over here for much or any longer than the u.s for the 4th installment.
Anyone else think the iPhone 4 is significantly uglier than the previous models?
@CornerStone I definitely thought so at first, it's grown on me a little. In the end, I guess I won't really decide until I see it. It'll definitely lay on its back a bit better.
@CornerStone
It doesn't matter. You'll still buy it.
@CornerStone It's certainly not as smooth looking, but on the other hand it will sit flat on a table, which I think is a (minor, though not entirely insignificant) shortcoming of the 3GS. I do wonder how it will feel in hand. Anyway, with these damnable 2 year contracts, I won't be getting the 4G model. Oh well.
@CornerStone
It's uglier sure.. but everybody puts on a case anyhow.
Part of the iPhone experience is having several cases and accessories. So change the shape... make more money. Why sell a phone that people can use their old accessories with? Rectangular bottom wont fit in an oval slot for a sound dock.
I don't like Apple... but I really hope they give people adapters with these things so all the hundreds they spent on accessories will still work.
@CornerStone nope, I think this is the sleekest looking iPhone ever.
@deepen03 I think it's much better, it's more in line with what Jonathan Ive aspires to do with design, which is to follow the design maxims of Deiter Rams. Watch the documentary "Objectified" and you can see the parallels between the two.
Apple must have cut you off? It's still available for me. http://twitpic.com/1qxj68
i already saved all the iphone 3gs pages as web archives, incase they upgrade the site soon
I clicked the link and it worked.
also there's a rumor is coming to Sprint!
@pedmart
My sprint rep was talkin up some pretty big game about that too... said he had some insider info bout sprint getting the iphone in sept.
I don't see it happening. If people think AT&T have a horrible network for the iPhone to be on... they won't know where to start complaining about sprint.
Don't get me wrong... I know a LOT of places get perfect sprint coverage with those amazing price plans.. ur lucky if you do. But nationwide there's a reason those plans are so cheap- poor coverage.
You don't go from one place that has bad coverage to another place with horrible coverage.
@schultz Dude I'm on AT&T now in a good 3g area and I have awful service under it so I use edge.
I was with sprint for 8 years b4 coming to AT&T in December 09 and all I have had were dropped calls under AT&T whack azz network. And dear spring roams from verizon so u can take ur lies elsewhere dear.
@schultz Most people don't travel nationwide either. Either you get decent coverage or you don't. Besides sprint has a 30 day no questions asked MBG.
I guess my phones a museum piece.
Thanks, Captain Obvious!
@cardfan
how often do you read engadget?
I'm sorry, but the button is not missing ... I just white color ...
@helopepe it is missing. the 3GS buttons are all available, 4 select buttons. then there is no button under the 3G phone. look closer.
I think people should use the term "4G" with a bit less casually as it has dual meaning. When I first read this I thought I somehow missed an announcement that AT&T was about to launch a 4G network sooner than expected. Instead it's just the 4th gen iPhone we've known about for a while now.
Maybe they shipped them all off to WalMart? Don't they have a deal running?
What a coincidence, I just sold my 3G today :)
In the Australian store it says the iphone 3G is 'currently unavailable'. Let's hope iphone 4G is cheaper/about the same price as the ipad....or at least the 16GB 3GS gets a price cut to what a 16GB wifi ipad costs....
Where's the "Breaking" tag?
@mm
Careful,my comment got deleted for asking the very same thing. -Credibility
My gadget addiction got the better of me. I just bought an unlocked one over the weekend and I am loving it! Yay me.
Given that there are much better phones out there for close to the same price I doubt anybody is gonna miss it. 2MP camera with no video recording and no auto focus. No 7.2Mbps HSPA. No remote control support. Only 8GB of storage. Lower batter life then the 3GS. Less RAM and a lower end CPU/GPU. Not to mention all of the OS 4.0 things that aren't coming to the 3G like multi-tasking.
Just seems pointless to me. Let's get the iPhone 4 and OS 4.0 out already, the first iPhone and iPhone OS that are all around quality, rather then having a number of short comings mixed with the positives. I figure they'll take the 16GB 3GS, throw OS 4.0 on it, and put it at $150 or something to replace the spot the 3G was holding.
@kenny goo
Wow, you are really just the master of the obvious, aren't you. Yes, Apple is going to stop selling this iPhone 3G, which is now almost 2 generations old, because they're coming out with a new one.
Glad you were able to get such a firm grasp on that concept. And out of curiosity, why would they sell the 16GB 3GS for $150 when Wal Mart is selling it for $97? When have you ever seen that large of a price gap between Apple's price and a retailer's price?
@kenny goo Yeah, it's going to go
3G go away
3GS now $99 on 2 yr
New iPhone 16GB - $199 on 2 yr
New iPhone 32GB - $299 on 2 yr
New iPhone 64GB to be released around 5 months after the first two for $299, the scale slides down.
@Jack
...nope. Not gonna give you the attention you so desperately want by actually responding to the points in your comment. Nice try though.
@World4GClear
dude relax, evo 4G will be here soon.
this isn't news, this was expected. they drop the 3G, then they will drop the price for the 3GS to 100 bucks for a 16 GB, then sell the iPhone HD/4G at 200 bucks for a 32 GB and 300 bucks for a 64 GB. just watch.
@deepen03
That seems pretty likely to me.
@World4GClear
1. You need moar prozac.
2. You're a Clear fanboy? Really? That's even more pathetic than being an Android fanboy. I'm pretty sure Clear wouldn't want you in here discouraging people from buying their service because you're such a jacktard.
3. Apple hasn't actually told us what the name of the phone is yet. It's very likely not "4G" anything.
4. Wow. Just wow.
iPhone 4G looks like it might be great, but I'm not getting one because:
A. Been there done that with 2G and 3G.
B. What good is a 4G phone on a 3G only network.
C. AT&T coverage (or lack thereof)
D. AT&T will likely increase pricing again.
E. I have an iPad and an Android with Wireless Tether, what do I need an iPhone for.
F. All of the above.
@Socalfrank
Uh, the "4G" refers to "fourth generation". As in, it's the fourth generation iPhone. It has nothing to do with Sprint's 4G network. Also, that's not the official name of the phone.
Have you seen any of the leaked information about the next iPhone? You have most definitely NOT been there with the second and third gen iPhones.
The pricing on the new iPhone will be exactly the same as it was for the old one, but very likely the storage capacity will double (i.e. 64GB instead of 32) for the same price.
We're all very happy that you have an iPad, but that doesn't mean millions of other people aren't going to buy the iPhone on the day it comes out. And my AT&T coverage is perfect so... what are you complaining about?
@Jack
Uh, yessss I have been there. I stood in line for the 1st iPhone and shelled out $600 for an 8GB version and then bought the 3G when it came out (called that because it was on the 3G network...it was only the 2nd version of iPhone) and saw the monthly rate for using the phone go up by $15/mo based on the previous $20 surcharge being raised to $35 for data and text.
You are lucky that you are so happy with AT&T, but there are millions of Americans who want to se iPhone on another carrier because they aren't as happy with AT&T.
@Socalfrank
That's great, but with subsidization you won't be paying $600, or $500, or $400. You don't have to stand in line either because they'll just ship it to you. And yes, everybody already knows the iPhone 3G was called that because of the network. However, YOU are the one calling the new one an iPhone 4G (look at your first post) and that's wrong.
And again, have you not been paying attention to the leaks and info coming out about the new iPhone? This is going to be a whole different beast than previous iPhones. Your "been there done that" attitude doesn't really apply.
As far as the carriers, you'll have to take that up with them. It's not up to Apple. If you'll recall, Apple shopped the iPhone to Verizon, and Verizon turned them down. Talk to them about not having the iPhone on their network.
@Jack
Oh yes Jack, you are right, I'm the ONE calling the new iPhone a 4G. I must have misread the article above where it says "but with the 4G presumably around the corner this could indeed be marking the end of the 3G's last stand." not to mention all the other online articles where I must have mistakenly read iPhone 4G. And of course if you run a Google search on iPhone 4G, nothing will come up because, I'm the ONE who called it that.
And I know the iphone 4G, (as only I call it) will not be $400,500, or $600, but I only said that to tell you that, yes I HAVE BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT. And in this case, I am not the only one. :-)
W00T!!!
Now my 8GB Black iPhone 3G Jailbroken phone can get a premium on eBay. "NO LONGER AVAILABLE IN STORES"
XD I'm teasing.
Keep celebrating :), how many foxconn employees had to die for the 4th gen iPhone?
Why doesn't Apple hold it's sub contractor to a reasonable standard? Jobs washes his hands of these deaths as he saves up for his next liver.
