Nokia updates N900 to version 1.2 in UK, closes door on MeeGo
And after much speculation, Nokia's also admitting that MeeGo will not be officially supported on the N900 once the Intel / Nokia OS is device ready. Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo OS, however, as demonstrated by today's update. Regardless, we're sure that the N900's active fan-base will deliver a MeeGo update outside of official channels, especially since the N900 is already being used as a platform for ARM-based MeeGo development.

GET AN ANDROID FOLKS AND IF NOKIA EVER DECIDES TO MAKE ONE NOT FROM THEM
@Atlantian
What?
"MeeGo will not be officially supported on the N900 once the Intel / Nokia OS is device ready"
Well, simply because Nokia wants you to buy that new device. If they supports MeeGo on this, less sales for the new device. Typical Nokia.
@pika2000 Well, people who bought this thing knew they bought a Maemo device. They didn't buy a MeeGo device. And "Nokia will continue to support the core Maemo OS, however, as demonstrated by today's update." Typical Nokia.
@pika2000 Just remember Nokia is not Apple.
@pika2000
I don't know why you're being downvoted because it's true. If you want a new Nokia with new features, buy a new Nokia. Their firmware upgrades have generally been rubbish (they introduce new bugs or don't fix current well documented bugs). I'm excited about the N8 but the closer it get's to being released, the more I realize that it's going to get the typical v12, v20, v30 firmware upgrades that fix 3 bugs and introduce a new one.
The 5800 is the only phone in Nokia's history that's received substantial updates. N97 is close with kinetic scrolling.
@corduroy
And now the N900 got a very substantial update.
this is the last time i buy a nokia device... what a royal screw up!
@semiloose
amen!
@semiloose
Well, to be fair, no Nokia device has ever gotten a "new" os, just upgrades to the existing one. This is what the N900 got now, and will continue to get. MeeGo is built for capacitive screens anyway, so I am not sure why you are so disappointed? This 1.2 release has many improvements and features, how is that screwing up?
For people not in the UK but can't wait for the OTA update, you can download the PR 1.2 image from: http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php and flash it using flasher 3.5... I've just updated mine, it works flawlessly...
Personally i have been quite dissapointed with the n900, mainly the fact that its still after several months of usage i cant handle the situation where i have something in my left hand, and have to call someone, for some reason its really hard to make a quick phone call by using only one hand, one major fuckup is that the phone is always upside down when you get it out of the pocket,and flipping it over with one hand over concrete is not worth the risk. Also the fact that the phone still isn't 100% portrait compatible will cause me to ditch it and buy the n8 once it comes out.
@Zeddy
I have no problems using the phone, scrolling is fine, alphabet is fine, typing is fine, recent calls is fine. I guess maybe they could add an onscreen portrait keyboard, but that would be real cumbersome 1-handed. In fact I'm pretty comfortable with one-handed operation in general, even in landscape. I guess this aggravates me because it's one of the non-factors people harp on while neglecting the fact that the n900 is the most convergent, featureful device ever, and it's cheaper than the other phones that aren't even up to it's level. Video calling, done.
I don't know how anyone can trust Nokia. They lurch around from idea to idea leaving their consumers holding the bag.
vodafone UK are being tossers again, not releasing this firmware for vodafone branded N900.. assholes!
Me love my n900. Just sayin'
relax people, maemo or android (take your pick) will still track very nicely with meego's feature/performance count for "at least" another year.
I fact, in many ways they'll prolly be better for much of that year...
