Nokia's Instant Community lets you socialize with those around you without actually meeting them (video)
Talking to people is hard, and talking to strangers? That's, like, really hard. Nokia has a better way: the Nokia Instant Community. It relies on ad-hoc WiFi connections from (Finnish) smartphones to create dynamic communities into which people can join. Once connected, trendy but introverted festival-goers can chat, exchange photos, and even download each other's bootlegs of the very show they're attending! It's the work of the Nokia Research Center along with Tampere University of Technology, and while it's just a prototype at this point, you can get the full walkthrough after the break -- the full, monotone walkthrough.

and the point of this is...?
@boxieblue Don't you read?
@boxieblue: ...socialize with those around you without actually meeting them. ;) just kidding, i don't get the point of this thing too.
@boxieblue
The point is that Nokia is trying to make your mobile phone, social networks, IM, maps, basically everything location aware. This is another piece of that puzzle. Horrible walkthrough, great technology.
@boxieblue
Most things that are fun to do don't have a point.
I wish people would stop asking this. It just shows lack of depth.
@boxieblue It is research center... Do you know the meaning of RESEARCH?! Might be used in some funky cool things in the future.
@Engadget those little jabs you throw at Nokia are very funny.But be careful cos in the end when Apple decides to put you guys in the jail (like with gizmodo )because you guys talked about iPhone, Nokia wont help you :D Remember the syphilis comment. :D
the video summarizes Nokia's problems... why is a cutting edge research project using a stylus?
@rsramkee: because they can?
@dartox The point is to have event-based, "ad-hoc" social networks that go away when you leave the event. No need to log on to Facebook and search for a FB group that you hope someone created for the event you are actually present in, only to find out there isn't one.
@aubreyq
Yes this is the point. Great for social events where everybody doesn't know everybody.
@Mr w00t
Isn't it amazing how every Nokia article has a snide comment or two embedded in it either as a backhanded compliment or just making fun of something totally irrelevant. Is this what they call fair unbalanced journalism? Furthermore, I am amazed that Engadget editors feel it is perfectly alright to make fun of other people's English speaking abilities - just remember those Finns can speak better English than you can speak Finnish, so who is the xenophobe+nincompoop here? Guys, seriously take some journalistic ethics and language courses at your nearest university and stop propagating the image of an arrogant ugly American who makes fun of non-American people who don't speak "American" - God knows Dubya has already done that enough for us to last a century. Also remember, not every #1 company has to be an American one.
@naashak
+ 1000
@naashak What is strikes me the most is that they dont mind giving snarky comments about companies/people they disagree with but as soon as I touch their wound with my comments they feel compelled to remove my comments...
Some geeks never grow old :(
@aubreyq thanks mate, my previous comment was a bit immature :)
This app totally makes sense after i looked at all the videos...totally beats any bluetooth communication app we currently have...
kudos to Nokia!
@World4GClear: have fun with your evo ;) but don't be jealous when the n8 arrives ;)
mm isn't this called facebook?
@annoynimous
If Facebook would be location aware then yes. But it is not.
@annoynimous
your facebook friends (esp Mark Z.) spams you, but not here coz it will work offline.
@annoynimous These are event-based, "ad-hoc" social networks that go away when you leave the event. That's the difference.
@JFH if facebook was location aware it ould be called big brother.
@Flix C
:)
@dartox The ONLY problem I have with S^3 is that it isn't as attractive as other OSes out there. Otherwise, it looks like it works plenty well, has all the features I could want and soon is going to be coupled with some pretty kick-ass hardware.
It just annoys me that Android is so "exciting" and "cool". Now, Symbian has widgets (and well-implemented to boot), well-implemented multitasking and very finger-friendly operation. Is there anything really wrong with it?
Sex. The driving force behind most technological achievements.
@A25i
"Tampere University of Technology"
the force is strong here
@A25i
Hammer hits nail.
@A25i
Win.
@A25i Also, the socially inept. The socially accepted get sex without technology.
@The Madman
Socially accepted people then use this technology to show off their succes. Same fundamental driver.
@World4GClear: well, if you can handle carrying a tv-sized-phone in your pocket and if you HAVE to use 4g, then go for the evo. it's the better option for you ;) but the "step your game up Nokia"-part is outdated with the n8 announcement.
@The Madman: just go for it (n8), you wouldn't be disappointed in any case. seriously.
@World4GClear
So...right now you have no phone? Why not wait for the EVO to come out BEFORE dumping your phone.
@dartox Aye. If I was only interested in looks, I'd be typing this on a Mac. :P
@World4GClear bammer
@World4GClear
MY android phone is replacing the N95 I had for over 2 years...I don't ever recall charging it via the USB port.
This is the charger that came with my N95/96 so I'm baffled with your story.

@World4GClear
You called that port a USB port...surely you know it's not a USB port. Next, I mentioned I had that phone for several years. It never bothered me. You'll find Nokia has the most handsets in people hands in the world. For a company with flimsy build quality and lack of durability they seem to have done well for themselves. Seemingly BILLIONS keep buying their easily broken phones. What fools they must be.
Or you're an isolated problem and one of Nokia's record selling smartphones had excellent build quality.
When would you ever use this?
99% of the shared content is going to be scat/midget pr0n renamed as other things.
@cashclientel
Being honest, I'd really like this if the fundamental idea of it all works if I'm gathering it correctly, as I haven't really seen the video (writing from work).
I've just always believed there is some sort of constant underlying phobia of people who haven't said hello to you yet. People are afraid of talking to people who will be afraid of strange people talking to them.
Hooray, yet another social (crap) feature that I'll never use.
But those around you must also have horrible taste in phones.
I used to do this on my Nintendo DS at comic con
@World4GClear
ehhh i was going to write a witty comment but lost all interest two words into it. .... long story short .. you're an idiot!
@World4GClear ahh...but this won't be just restricted to Nokia. Once research is complete, it would probably work as a software. true, it will initially be only implemented in Nokia Symbian devices, but i am sure other platforms won't be too far behind in copying the functionality.
@boxieblue ummm...just found this statement (on SlashGear): "it’s been developed as an open platform – on top of which compatible apps can be built"
so there....your much loved (hyped?) HTC Evo might just get to use it somewhere down the line
dont you love the excitement of those guys...
we hope you like it... OR ELSE...
