Viliv's AMOLED Prime P3 media player sports both Android and Windows CE
We've never been comfortable with the fact that Viliv's many fun and fashionable PMPs have yet to gain a real foothold in the states. Maybe this will change with the Prime P3 media player. As near as we can tell (our Korean is a little rusty) this bad boy sports a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, has both Android 2.1 and Windows CE 6.0 partitions, and supports 720p video. But that ain't all! Connectivity is via microUSB, and additional storage comes courtesy of microSDHC. Rounding things off are an 800 MHz ARM Cortex CPU, accelerometer, and WiFi -- all in a pretty classy little package. Available in flavors up to 32GB, we have no idea when this will see release, or for what price. We'll let you know as soon as we get a heads up. For reals.

My Zune 120s battery is fucked. I'll get this or an HD, whichever gets 128 gb first.
@n8equalsd Speaking of batteries, this is touting a reported 16hour video and 160 hours of stand-by
최대 11 시간 (동영상), 최대 160시간(대기모드)
@n8equalsd
Zune HD? Worst decision of my life. Sold it 6 months after I got it once I was tired of waiting for apps.
@dmshocker Well, if you bought it for apps, you should have done your research beforehand. I bought mine for the media capabilities and honestly couldn't be happier.
@n8equalsd
By the way, what's up with having two OSs? It seems pretty cool but I don't get the point.
@n8equalsd Do you use a PC or Mac? How man OS' do you have on those?
As for the Viliv, it looks quite teh hot.
@Teslanaut
I have a pc that uses vista, but I don't see how that's the same as a pmp having more than one os.
@dmshocker
Really? I have a Zune HD and as far as apps and games go I'm completely content.
@dmshocker
you bought a media player to run apps. good job. aside from the lack of apps the zune hd is a great media player.
@n8equalsd
Keep waiting. The first 128GB device isn't coming until next year at the earliest given that today the cheapest 128GB flash drives cost $300 in and of themselves.
well hello where did you come from?
@SteveyAyo It was at CES...
@jayayess1190 wow i really let this thing slip by unnoticed... not sure how, its gorgeous
@SteveyAyo Hello? Is it you that I have been looking for?
I wold buy this in a heartbeat.
@Firehazel yeah im thinking i might have to buy the android version of this...
Only up to 32 gb? Damn. Guess this isn't a viable option for my 42 gb and growing music library (95% of it which isn't listened to). Might have to upgrade Zune hd 32 to 64.
@Diggler I have no problem storing up videos, but I try to actually make my music stored on PMPs song's I'll never skip, so 100% is listened to on a 2 day trip, but I'm not always listening to it because I keep NPR for more change of pace. I definitely prefer hearing all my favorites rather than having an abundance, but I believe myself to be in the minority there.
@Diggler Just noticed it has microSD card, so if the 16 is internal and it supports expansion you might be able to cap out at 48GB, though you wouldn't be leaving yourself much breathing room.
@Diggler
Ahah I hear ya, if anyone doesn't experience this, what the hell are wrong with them
I kinda like this.. It's supports that indecisive side of me when it comes to mobile operating systems
At last... a device to unite both android and WM fanboys...
@chasing statues
Long Live Andows Drobile
@WilliamNighthawk damn, that'd be an awesome username, or babys name.
is that coverflow I see someone call apple I smell a patent infringement lawsuit coming
@Console fanboy
nope no copyright infringement there ... same style like on Android 2.1 (maybe earlier versions as well. dunno that part)
DMB option, a lot of battery for video playback, microSD and loads of audio format support. I'll look for Korean pricing.
@juanvaldez I'm seeing a blog listing as 370-390K won (starting at less than $350) but it's a bit hard for me to tell how much they are speculating versus hard facts and most sites aren't reporting a price, so it's probably conjecture. The interesting part is later in the blog they reference an iRiver player in the same spec class that runs for about $100 more, so the rumor/conjecture/other might have some legs.
Does this play FLAC or anything? Allow for quick playlist creation while listening to music? I'm really not seeing anything special about this besides its crazy specs
@DustbinK FLAC, yes. Special, I'd say Android is close to special in an PMP (mostly assuming marketplace support which I actually would guess it wouldn't have if tablets are a good precedent, but, oddly enough, they do show pics of the games from the marketplace), though Android is not for everyone. Besides FLAC it seems to have other good format support and a few stickers to put on Audio quality (bring that back!) SRS, TruBass, FOCUS, HD audio, limiter and 10-band user adjustable EQ. DMB option, possibly a Korean market exclusive feature though. In any case, it has potential.
@DustbinK I've always wanted to know why people use FLAC. It seems like it's just become an excuse to need more storage space for music and leads to bizarre 50+ GB audio collections. I'd really love to find a blind test that shows people choosing FLAC over lossy formats with a medium-high VBR. Most tests Google took me to were low-rate comparisons, which did me no good.
Believe me, I'm a purist about a lot of things (coffee) where you can actually tell the difference, and I went through my FLAC phase years ago, but I ditched it when I realized that even WMA with a high VBR sounds no different to ANYONE (unless, mysteriously, you happen to tell them it's WMA beforehand, which somehow magically makes it suddenly sound like crap).
Blind tests! I demand blind tests!!!
And it looks like I sort of somewhat a little bit found one:
http://www.businessweek.com/idg/2010-05-12/audio-compression-may-not-be-so-bad.html
But I doubt anyone on a tech site would take it seriously since it claims music professionals graded WMA higher than the other formats in the test, and WMA is generally a target of audiophile hate.
ive been watching this since it was first announced...i knew then it would be my next player
@juanvaldez...you mean 11 hours of videos
it also calls for 30 hours of audio
just hope it gets released in the states and soon....and if it has to wait...i hope itll have froyo by then
@bdroc That's a fair assumption, but I think my translation plus the fact that its literally referenced right next to the stand-by time makes me more likely to be correct. For you to be correct they have to be saying that it takes exactly 1GB for a 720p movie (which actually isn't referenced in the spec line) per hour, while in reality they might have the desire to state that you can store approx 40 hours of movies ripped from DVD (it's like when you talk about having FLAC but quote the audio storage capacity in 128kps rips, it's just marketing to talk up stats.)
@bdroc After re-reading 3 times, I think you're right.
@bdroc
Even more important than froyo is whether this will have access to the Android Market. Has Google reversed their stance on not allowing the android market on non-phones? I've heard rumors that they are going to allow some pmp access, but they want quality control. Until Google treats pmp's as first class devices, I think the Ipod touch is going to eat Android lunch in the pmp market. This is a pity as: 1) Android devices have better screens and (this one at least) hd out-- perfect for a pmp. 2) Apple doesn't exactly treat the ipod touch as first class, in fact they are rather mean about charging for updates. 3) I'd like to try out android without a high priced data plan.
What is up with the busted screen. Look at the upper left.
@MJCS
Are you talking about that line running down? It looks like software. It goes away when he turns it on the side and it goes into the cover flow mode.
@Dafrety No thats hardware. It doesn't appear when rotated since that part of the screen is black. Trust me it is a hardware problem.
This thing is sexy. I want it to have all of my children.
Looks promising
Heres the pricing and release date. ( I wish someone can read Korean).
Price is same as iPod Touch.

@rehan716 available in 6 days or to name it after the 31th of May 2010
@theswiss I think that's actually part of a special offer on pricing, financing or something, I dunno, my Korean is a WIP. But, it directly contradicts the top line which was much easier for me to understand where it says it was launched on the 20th of May (err, I think.)
@rehan716
here's some of the specs from the link:
launches 5/20 (in Korea)
3.7" amoled display 16.7million colors
0.98cm thick
10.5 hours video/30 hours music
dual-boot os windows ce/android
wifi
dmb
voice recording
electronic dictionary/translator
fm radio
tv-out
micro sd slot
internal speaker
10 band equalizer plus presets
Wish it supported SDXC.
2 Koreas. 2 operating systems. Makes sense. Western man not understand to his folly
@AstroSeven Hans Brix?
Wonder if it sounds as good as a Cowon player.
@hated one Well, by that logic audio quality and format support are overrated to, right? As is price? I think 2 things about the success about the iPod, it's app store and its UI. Before the iPod touch Apple had massive sales, so it was just people staying with the brand they knew and loved.
App Store, UI, brand-loyalty; those are the reasons. If Apple had used AMOLED and in it was still the most successful, it wouldn't mean that Super AMOLED would be an inflated spec..right? Success isn't always a means to judge the quality of a spec, there's more to it than that, IMO.
@hated one Whats up with you posting irrelevant shit all the time???No one said shit about what the sheep want. Kill yourself
