Archos 8 Home Tablet just a 7-inch display according to FCC docs
Get a load of that bezel. With chunk like that we can only be looking at the Archos 8 Home tablet, a device that just lumbered its way through the FCC in a rather unflattering (even for the FCC) photo spread. Archos calls its Model 7800 an Android MID throughout the government docs, but given the bezel-to-display ratio we're guessing it'll pull primary duty as a $199 picture frame with the ability to track down the occasional recipe over WiFi. Other details include the same plodding Rockchip RK2808 SoC found in the Archos 7 Home Tablet and a HSD070IDW1 resistive touchscreen display from Hannstar with 800x480 pixel resolution, 25ms response, 500:1 contrast, 200/300 nits brightness, and poor 140-degree left-right and 110-degree up-down viewing angles -- easy to see where Archos cut out the cost, eh? Oh, and get this, Hannstar says that its display is 7-inches, not 8-inches as Archos claims. Either Archos made a mistake in its FCC submission or the company is hoping to mask reality with that giant plastic border.

too small
@Benaus
I don't want to sound like a geek, but if this is an actual photo of the Archos 8 and these are rulers measured in centimeter, then the screen is about 16cm x 13 cm, which gives you a diagonal of about 8 inches.
@Benaus
Your right, the bezel is too small.
@Benaus here's the inevitable: "that's what she says!"
So they removed the keyboard, used all the surface you get from a netbook keyboard around the screen for no usable purpose. This deserves a... Doh!
Looks like a digital weight scale. And probably it is everything is intelligent nowadays.
@Benaus
And I thougt the iPad had a huge frame.
@Niklasnick Same!
@Benaus
The next revision uses a 3.5" screen and a 12" bezel.
@abedinthehouse
yeah i agree, i bought the apple ipad i was thinking what was the one thing this was missing, more bezel! my prayers have been answered!
My bezel is bigger than YOUR bezel!
@tklr08
Now the iPad bezel seems small, huh?
@tklr08 Suck that, iPad!
@tklr08 I like big bezels and I cannot lie...
That thing needs to lose some weight...errr bezel
Wow, I don't think anyone can complain about bezel again after this thing. That things bezel is godlike. It is what other bezels wish to achieve. Haha.
Maybe its compensating for something? :p
Bezellissimo!
Epic Bezel Fail.
Bezelicious...
needs moar bezel
Holy Bezel Batman!
Well, at least no one's going to have problems with smudging the screen.
You might have trouble *finding* the screen though.
Archos isnt even trying.
Isn't that bezel a little wide even for a picture frame?
haha... it's not a screen with some bezel... it's a bezel with some screen in it!
It's not a tablet it's a photo frame.
@anotherworld
I think you need to speak up: IT'S NOT A TABLET IT'S A PHOTO FRAME.
its a might big bezel to go into a tablet - sure do hope they have LEDs in those to make up for lost space
How does archos stay in business with all these crap products? They've obviously got some money to throw around, maybe they should actually try designing something good.
@Luffy
Actually they don't. Archos revenue:
2006 - 124 Mil. Euros
2007 - 102 Mil. Euros
2008 - 74 Mil. Euros
2009 - 58 Mil. Euros
Doesn't look good at all.
@SeeKo and looking at this monstrosity I'm not surprised... oh wait I am surprised that they make any money at all...
@Luffy
I don't think they do have money to throw around. This is low spec and low on technical innnovation. They don't appear to have good designers and engineers working for them because they probably can't afford to pay for good designers and engineers.
iPhat !
My God - It's full of bezel!
The goggles! They do nothing!
disgusting
this thing will only going to make my iPad wielding buddies more obnoxious :(
Suck my bezel.
Yeah, ease up! It's not a rubbish tablet - its an amazing photo frame!
Wait till you find out they're putting Android 1.5 on it!!!
One bezel to rule them all !
The only way I could justify that bezel is if the tablet was running webOS and it had a giant gesture area :-/.
If I purchase this will I be guilty of em-bezel-ment?
@Twest1283
ahhh that's a stretch, but I'm gonna give it to you. +1 internets.
more cow-bezel!
One of my picture frames just jumped off the table and ran to my laptop and screamed "BEZEL!!"
The wide bezel is to accommodate the ambient lighting bars surrounding the display. Archos counts these in the display size since they're active.
I'm normally the one to complain about how Engadget talks about bezels never endingly...but even I'll admit this is ridiculous.
Holy Bezel, Batman!!
yay for the metric system (see rules).
Hey, knuckleheads, the bezel is intentional. This is intended to be some sort of picture frame-ish device. I quick look at the Archos website shows they also have a 7 inch device with a much more reasonable bezel for portable use.

I kind of like Archos devices. They are great for portable video viewing.
