Sony's rollable OLED display can wrap around a pencil, our hearts (video)
Nothing says "future" quite like a rollable display. Today Sony's giving us a glimpse into what will one day be with its 80μm-thick organic TFT-driven OLED display. The 4.1-inch display integrates Sony organic thin-film transistors and OLED technology onto a flexible 20μm substrate lacking any rigid driver IC chips. As such it can be wrapped around a cylinder with a 4-mm minimum radius. Display specs include a 432 x 240 pixel resolution (121ppi) supporting 16M colors while exceeding 100nits brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast. It's still research, but it's clearly advancing towards product... someday. See it in action after the break.

Very impressive
"ooooOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!"
.....was literally my impression.
When can I get a second mortgage to buy this?
@abedinthehouse
forget about my morgatge, TAKE MY LIMBS!!!
XD
i cant wait for this kind of thing to be commonplace :)
@FiveseveN
In the future you will be able to roll it around your wife while in bed so it displays Jenna Haze.
How about bending in another direction?
@FiveseveN Nice that it's rollable, but can it be unrolled and rolled repeatedly without permanent damage?
Oooooo.. next vers of PSP is gonna be awesome.
@abedinthehouse that's too expensive for a pencil.
@FiveseveN
WHERE IS MY NOKIA MORPH!!!???
@Kurian
MEGA!!!
@FiveseveN Soon you can watch p0rn on your condom.
@Kurian
Yea, but at that point in the future, Jenna Haze will be "mature"
@jubjub It seems like the job of that there machine to find out.
@Edmunn i was thinking the same thing, i think it´s not possible...
Stick these in fortune cookies, it'll make them more interesting :)
@oproski
"Worth a fortune" cookies?
@oproski in bed?
@Coufu
and LG is filing a patent for this?
@oproski have u actually had a fortune cookie? how do u think they got in the cookie? those papers are baked along in the oven. putting those chemicals in your cookie could mean lead poisoning.
@oproski "Help, I'm stuck in a fortune cookie factory."
The future in the making.
@WenJam
8 micrometers thin though? How are they gonna manage that, h4x0rs & a1mb0tz???
@WenJam
why aren't more people digging this?! more people need to see its awesomeness!!
awesome
Really amazing how fast innovation seems to be happening these days.
Just 10 years ago this was the stuff in sci-fi movies. 10 years from now it will be standard issue in car windshields, high-end eye glasses, etc.
@Jon Niola You can thank the crash in Roswell for that.
@Winters75 don't you remember? They're reverse-engineering Megatron!
@Winters75
Area 51 will always be my answer why these tech exist.
@xaduurv
NBE1
@Jon Niola
I'll never be satisfied until I can buy a hover car.
hope i can take this to class why powerpoint is on so I can watch some office or simpsons and easily put it away after!
Digital Scroll
I am truely blown away!
New way of cheating on test?
@AlienSix Alex, why are you looking down your pants?
Answer: I have a screen on my penis.
@Teslanaut
Screenis?
@NHAnimator
So much WIN here LOL!
@Teslanaut
I was just thinking about discounted condom packs...courtesy live ad placements!
Throw in some touch-screen gesture controls and we're talking gravy.
@Faceless Troll
Not unthinkable, is it? With Super-AMOLED the touch sensitive layer is integrated directly into the screen itself. Maybe in a few years it will work with this one too. :-)
@SeeKo
Mmm, gravy.
finally we might get a way to have nice big screens to work on AND have them portable!
@took
I remember seeing other prototypes of flexible displays, the problem there was that you could roll it up about 4 times before it went dead.
Being so thin, it is likely this has the same problem.
Let's hope they get it fixed soon, but even with a restriction like that there are tons of possibilities already.
The new fruit roll ups.
@Massive Poop
...as in rollable iPhones. Smartphones on a stick that you unroll like miniature Venetian blinds.
Imagine one day being able to waltz into a room with a scroll, unroll it and hang it up on the wall as a TV screen.
Kickass.
@WenJam You sir, are full of win.
@WenJam You'll spend half an hour getting it to stay flat against the wall after un-rolling it.
@fpad77 not necessarily, if you mix the roll-able properties with some thing that when electrically charged hardens it (which in my ignorance right now I know exists, but can't recall the name of it). Oh and can we say PSP Flat?
@WenJam
I'm looking forward to laptops that look like small keyboards with a scroll next to them. Small enough to fit in cargo pants pockets. Then take it out and unroll your 22" widescreen monitor.
