You are not mentioning anything about Apps. The problem is not if Froyo doesn't run on latest device. Apps who will require 2.2 to take advantage of latest APIs won't run on that device.
@memeslayer Exactly what I think. It will be frustrating for users with no knowledge of Android versions when they come to get an app and get told it won't run on their device meanwhile just about every app currently still runs on all iPhones and it looks like WP7 will be the same.

That's just progress. Unfortunately, Google went a little quicker than the OEMs and carriers could handle. I have no doubt in my mind that fragmentation (especially when it comes to the app market) will be less of an issue in months and years to come.
