Google: jabs at Apple 'in a spirit of good fun' in fight for developers (video)
In case you missed it, you really should go back and check out Google's Vic Gundotra roasting of Apple during the Google I/O day 2 keynote last week. Hearing a VP from a major company in the consumer electronics industry so ruthlessly lampoon Apple was refreshing to say the least. TechCrunch sat down with the man post I/O and asked Vic about Google's relationship with Apple, particularly after the flurry of jabs Google made in the direction of Cupertino. Vic responded as follows:
When pressed on the jabs and particularly calling Apple "closed" and Google "open," Vic responded:"It wasn't necessarily jabs at Apple, we have a deep respect for the innovation they brought. And places where Android has gone further we're very excited to show those off, we're very proud of Android. And I think in the end consumers really benefit from healthy intense competition that leads all companies to elevate their game. And it was done in a spirit of good fun."
We'll see how much fun Google thinks this is when Steve Jobs unleashes his RDF onto the world on June 7th. Until then, watch the TC interview after the break -- the good stuff kicks in at about 5:35. Oh, and we've also tossed in Vic's notorious "draconian future" dig for reference."We do like to draw sharp distinctions between our various approaches. But let's be clear we're two competitors competing for the hearts and minds of developers and we're trying to have some fun while doing that."

Jobs wont have anything to come back with, so yeah itll still be fun for google.
@fel We should get Steve Balmer, Steve Jobs, and Erick Shmidt on the Engadget Show to have a Tech Debate that would be Epic....
@liftedngifted1
We should get Steve Balmer, Steve Jobs, and Erick Shmidt on the Engadget Show and then have Hell in a Cell.
@liftedngifted1 Do you. Raly think Jobs would attend something like that? (Well shit this droid isn't letting me fix my typos)
@fel I'm just waiting for beacauseitsnotgoogle to chime in and get downranked like a boss, once again.
@fel
What is pretty amusing about this is that Android seems very much a hobby to Google (keep it up it's a great hobby!), whereas iphone is like oxygen to Jobs...
@liftedngifted1 Well I believe Jobs and Ballmer will both be at the D8 conference.
@fel
"We'll see how much fun Google thinks this is when Steve Jobs unleashes his RDF onto the world"
Seems like someone other than Jobs and Aple received the jab.
Engadget as always.
@fel Jobs will be like "Screw you all", to Google and Adobe.
@fel Apple could have a really good comeback concerning Googles desire to control all data in the world.
if Apple is Draconian then Google is Big Brother with its constant data collection and monitoring.
Personally I'm more concerned about who has my data, how they are compiling it, and how they continue to sneak around under a cloak of "good & openness" in order to monitor me than I am about a lack of hardware/carrier choices.
@fel
Steve Jobs:" We are now the bigest tech company in this country...... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. We win"
Vic Gundotra: "We wish we were you :("

Ok for people like you market capitalisation does not equal size! You know in 2008 for a few days Porsche became the largest company in the WORLD (by market capitalisation) through its market manipulation.
Now even you should know Porsche has never been as big as GM, Ford, Toyota, Shell, Exon, etc, etc.
@fel Im a huge fan of both Android and iPhone OS. But I have to say, having one company, with one OS and one device DOES mean that there are no issues with software updates and all owners immediately being able to upgrade to the latest software and features. There are still some android users stuck at 1.5 and 1.6 due to manufacturer dithering!
@fmc159 and how is MMS on the original iPhone and Multitasking on the iPhone 3G working out?
@synthesized
Market Cap != Size
Microsoft still has a higher revenues and net income than Apple, despite what the stock market thinks. AAPL's P/E is not typically for a company who is currently losing marketshare- overbought in my opinion.
Might be good for a flip if you wait until the new iPhone. Market goes crazy over Jobs' keynotes...
@Apple Google Microsoft Hard to think of Android as anything other than a hobby when they don't directly appear to make money from it. It's all about getting their search and application market into users' hands.
@fmc159
It also means that all of my legacy data is treated like a second class citizen. Moving around what data the device will accept is much more cumbersome than it needs to be. Certain features commonplace to all computing devices since the 1970s are missing. The ability for disruptive innovators to help build the platform into something more is gone.
Something with all of the rough corners sanded off is an apt description of the Big Brother platform from 1984.
@liftedngifted1
Sounds like "the morning after the night before" syndrome , these bigwigs shot their mouth off at google i/o and are starting to think they might have gone a little too far now eh?
Someone needs to tell these exec's thats the trouble with shooting your mouth off when you really haven't got the balls or the convictions to stand behind what you said!!!
@fel
i just loved the day 2 keynote. . not just for the apple jabs.. but the whole thing !
@Pusta
MMS works on all iPhones!
Multi-tasking works on 3G too but Apple have decided to restrict it due to their attention to detail of "User Experience".
Its all well and good having "open" systems and allowing developers and manufactures to have a free reign as Google & Android promotes, but I for one am glad that a manufacturer like Apple has the self respect to say "you know what, this is not going to be a great experience for the user, whilst we are going to continue to develop the O/S, there comes a time when you just have to say we're going to have to call time on this particular feature for 2 to 3 year old hardware".
Your slate Apple for this and are the first to moan when your ageing handsets crawl to a halt because they're trying to do things developed on new/unreleased hardware!
@digitizedsociety
Exactly. The Android fanboys are giddy over every thing google does, meanwhile they cannot see past their own noses to see that thery are basically targeted all the time.
Google is not this "do no evil company". Every thing they do has a motive to drive more ads into your face.
@fel With Google everything that's serious to Apple, turn out to be just fun.. and that's great! Soon it will all be about Google V Apple now. http://j.mp/apple-google-battle-inevitable
@digitizedsociety Google is Big Brother? Then what is Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg? The Antichrist himself?
@Apple Google Microsoft
you're right, apple should just treat the iphone like a hobby, that would keep quality high, i like google, but i dont want to buy a device from a company that just makes it "for fun"
@stoffer Yes.
Both basically get as much info about you as they can, so they can sell ads.
@sendgadget why not? if they are doing it because they are having fun with it they would be most enthusiastic and creating things everyone can enjoy. i for one am highly supportive of a company that is creating products because they have fun with it rather than a company who is dishing out new products just for the money and bring no real personality to it.
@fmc159 Yes, this is a true caveat. However, with multiple manufacturers you also benefit from lower prices. One manufacturer w/ one OS telling you the price vs. Many manufacturers with one OS competing on price. I'll take the latter...
@digitizedsociety who cares who collects data about you? You think apple doesn't harvest information from the people who use its products? What matters is what they do with that information.
@Billy And please go home? Please?
Jabbing someone with a metal pointy rod, is going to hurt alot, even if its only for fun ;)
@mattisdada
Steve would counter your stylus with a multi touch gesture.
@fais
MAGICAL multi touch gesture
@8th Gamer Google's gonna "jab" Apple while Apple's gonna spear them in return.
@all of you
that's what she said
@fais lol, I got the image of Jobs miming at Schmidt.
That video is great.
@cloud858rk
The first one seemed to have an awkward interview angle.
@cloud858rk The interview wasn't :/ They have 10mins with Vic and they ask the same questions that have been asked/answered at the IO/Android Q&A...such a waste.
Wait, what? Isn't this a bit of kettle calling the pot black? While Apple may be closed, Google is the biggest Big Brother at the moment.
@jubjub Is this the kettle calling the pot black? No, not at all. Do you even know how to properly use that phrase?
@jubjub Are you joking? Do you know anything about Android at all?
@ChuChu I think he's referring to the google search engine as supposed to Android
@tomer It's still the incorrect use of the idiom.
like it or not
Apple is the new opiate of the masses
@Bort Simpson Yep... And also Engadget's.
Seems that hurts them, deeply, to see Google ripping Apple off. Meanwhile Jobs does the same thing about Adobe/Microsoft/Nokia/Google/etc and it is somehow hinted in a positive note.
@Mr w00t Ok listen, I'm not exactly a fan of Apple, but I still don't get this "Engadget is biased in favour of Apple and services Jobs on a daily basis" theme. If you read the article, you'll see how they find "Hearing a VP from a major consumer electronics company so ruthlessly lampooning Apple was refreshing to say the least". And don't forget the line at the end: "Steve Jobs unleashes his RDF onto the world on June 7th".
If you want clear evidence of Apple fanboyism, just head to the Gawker empire, where they'll pay 5 grand for a stolen iPhone prototype...
@r3loaded agreed...its almost getting irritating to read engadget articles.
@r3loaded
Much more than that...
Man Thomas, u sure went a length to call Google a "major consumer electronics" company. I looked at my home devices, they looked back at me, and not a single one was branded by Google, am I missing something or that Nexus thing done by HTC is omnipresent and gave you the right to say so?.
Just as a reminder, 99% of Google's revenue comes from advertising.
Check your facts or please someone put me out of my corporate misery...
Its funny how you know what articles on Engadget will bring out fanboys on both sides
@AlienSix - yep, though I feel most are rooting for Google, while trying to flame up the other side constantly, don't they have anything else better to do than trying to find someone, anyone that disagrees and "wait for you to appear so he can down-rank you" LOL!
