Android 2.2 wastes no time getting hacked onto HTC Dream and Magic
Though we're not even a wee bit shocked to see a "usable" version of Froyo already available to owners of the G1 / Dream and Magic, we're definitely heartened to see that phones running 2008 specs can handily run a mid-2010 version of the platform. There's plenty of stuff that doesn't work yet -- WiFi and GPS, just to name a couple of biggies -- but we suspect that this is one dev community that won't give up until everything is working to their satisfaction. Motivation to hang on to otherwise outdated hardware for a few more months, perhaps?

big surprise haha. i think the dream will be around for a while.
@izmar in the way that people will continue to develop it. then again i bet a lot of those 2 year contracts are about to run out.
@izmar
you're damn right its a surprise when counter-arguments point to hardware being obsolete to run new updates.
@annoynimous The problem is that there isn't much better than the G1 coming on T-Mobile, especially with a hardware keyboard, unless you have an individual plan and can get the Nexus One for cheap.
Those of us on family plans are pretty much stuck to a MyTouch Slide or hoping something better comes along. (Hopefully the rumored HTC Sidekick Twist.)
@izmar Shoot. That last comment was supposed to be for izmar.
@izmar Woo! Can't wait for this to drop on the G1... so unfortunate that the initial android users who helped build the platform have gotten shafted by both Google and T-mobile. Bravo XDA for keeping the dream alive.
@Sizzmo
Wrong. You didn't help build anything. You bought something that suited you. The fact you haven't upgraded yet shows you hardly care much about 'supporting' the platform.
Why should they care more about someone who hasn't bought a phone in 3 years? They should look after their premium users first
@suicidebob you sound like Fake Steve Jobs.
@suicidebob Um... I bought my MyTouch 2 months ago. If you're on T-Mobile, you have the MyTouch, G1, Behold II, Cliq, Cliq XT, or Nexus One. I hate Motoblur. I couldn't afford and didn't want a Nexus One because I already get spotty 3G reception in Chicago and supposedly the N1 would be worse. Behold II still runs 1.5. So, I'm stuck with either a MyTouch or a G1.
With this 2.2 update, my G1 will be faster than any iPad or iPhone 3GS device period!
I love android!
@Vanilla Sperm Whoah wait a minute, don't get too excited. I have run a ported 2.2 rom on my eris and there is no speed improvement. The final versions of these roms will most likely offer some speed improvements but u still have a 528mhz processor, and the iPad has a 1ghz processor and equally efficient software. Not trying to downplay the significance of this port, I just think your expectations are a litle too high ;)
@Vanilla Sperm
If 2.2 comes to the G1, moving apps to the SD card and the extra performance will totally make it a viable option again. I needn't have upgraded !
@jasonic apps2dsd is old news buddy i find that most of these post are of people posting to post or have the phone and is still using stock rom or knows some 1 that knows some 1 that has the phone
Just can't wait for it to come to the Droid.
@jaycemiskel already saw a test build running on it...it'll be out soon
Really? Good to know
This is Sweet
Its good to know that Froyo can operate on older devices cause with the Dell Streak already semi-outdated specs its going to need all the help it can get. They should of released it a year ago so we could be on iteration 2 by now.
Dell Streak Internals:
-----------------------------
Platform
Android v1.6 (multi-touch UI)
CPU
1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250
Storage
ROM
512 MB
RAM
256 MB
Expansion slot
1 user accessible MicroSD™ cardslot
Internal memory
2GB (for system & applications files only - not user accessible)
@kamenwati how is that outdated? what phone is faster than a 1ghz snapdragon? Maybe a tegra device... but those are elusive to the US
@tu eres estupido Thats why I said semi-outdated I was referring to the ram only being 256MB sorry I wasn't clear. The Streak seems to be a top of the line 2009 phone which makes me sad cause I wanted so bad hell I still do but I'm really worried about that memory and wish it had a better camera but thats less important.
@kamenwati hopefully the Tegra 2 10" looking glass tablet from dell will leak down into the 5" streak... cause that device has potential...
@tu eres estupido yeah that would definitely be awesome. It would be great if the delay in its arrival to the american market was to upgrade it but I doubt that will be the case. The 2nd gen one is probably going to be a Tegra 2 or Snapdragon 2 beast. But those dell tablets are promising.
@kamenwati just shut it already... your posting on a specific phones post and dont even know the specs..... that thing is like twice the speed of the g1 or mt3g and those phones are getting froyo... i dont know much about that phone but device manfacturers can make it so hard to customize your phones.... some android phones are still to this day unrootable... but htc phones are alot easier to work with thats why it has a bigger fan base.... you should try getting a phone that alot of people have then ask for roms
@big nazty Dude what are you even talking about first why are you such an asshole and second I said its good to know that it can run it and processor speed is only one part of the equation memory matters try to run a pc with a core i7 but but less then a GB of ram...and Froyo was created with the latest devices in mind and that includes ram count the G1 and magic had folks put it on it it was not necessarily intended for that generation of devices
next make an intelligent comment and shut yourself up before you speak foolishness
never had to get this type of tone with any other commenter's before thanks for bring things down a knoch
@kamenwati you just getting mad n emotional cause im right... you didnt say not 1 time in that reply that i was wrong
The boys & girls at XDA do it again! That's why I LOVE HTC phones!!!
@AndyJ
I'm glad that there are people porting the OS to all sorts of devices but a bit disappointed too. It really shouldn't have been so difficult. I'd like to see Android get to a stage where anyone can install it on their phones/tablets without having to wait for someone to 'hack' it.
Is it really a hack if its an opensource handset getting an opersource OS? No one is stopping people from updating but the software just isn't updated for that specific device...
@tu eres estupido well technically for now it is a hack because the source has not been released from google yet. They are using a hybrid rom composed from a nexus one dump and the sdk
@tu eres estupido ok well the word hack sounds like something is where its not supposed to be... or something illegal... this would be more of a mod or port i would think...
That's awesome that launch G1 owners will be up to date until their contracts are up.
@Spaceshipped No kidding. I'm counting the days till mid September.
@Spaceshipped Agreed, they deserve this!
I can't wait till next friday when I get my EVO.
Its good by feature deprived iPhone and then call AT&T to tell them to cancel my horrible service!!!
I HATE YOU AT&T with your horrible service and dropped calls.
I HATE YOU APPLE! for always holding back features just so you sell me a new phone the following year.
You have some real competition coming your way.
@Juggernaut408
Why did you buy an Iphone anyway? Sound like you jumped on the bandwagon cos they were 'cool, nothing to do with the functionality you needed. Now the EVO is 'cool' you're jumping there.
@Juggernaut408 i agree you sound like a bandwagon junky... good news is the evo is already rooted... so if i was getting the evo and i have a week? i would make a rooting tutorial so str8 out the box i would root that bad boy
Hero please! I'll give up sense for 2.2 I think...it finally looks like a real OS, without sense that is.
@chtown I really feel sorry for Hero owners. HTC totally sense fucked the sub-par hardware device...
Keeping the Dream alive.
@n8equalsd Well played! haha.
How u get that dock thing on the bottom of the screen?i just got a motorola droid and saw a few pics of this b4 and never new how to get it...
@LukeRocksALot
It's on 2.2.
@LukeRocksALot
You can get something really similar by downloading ADW.Launcher from the market.
@LukeRocksALot
Comes with Android 2.2 which isn't out yet for the Droid. Search for HelixLauncher or Launcher Pro in the android market if you want a dock and some extra features.
@Steve B Exactly what i was looking for,Thanks! 1+
@LukeRocksALot
HelixLauncher is the smoothest launcher, I've found. ADW runs pretty sluggishly even on Nx1/Froyo. Unfortunately Helix FCs on 2.2.
@LukeRocksALot i have that on my cm 5.0.7 test 7 rom its pretty nice
http://www.androidtechnical.info/romlib will have the ROM soon on their links for use with "A4D Mobile Utility" (via market) or direct download.
I just updated it using the "A4D Mobile Utility" on MyTouch. It works!!! Minus the defects. Thanks http://www.androidtechnical.info/romlib.html
Dream and mytouch devices will always be up to date as long as there is a dev community commited to android
I expect G1 to be running Gingerbread and raisin bread builds when google drops them in the near future
