Autonomous quadrocopter flies through windows, straight into our hearts (video)
We don't know whether we should be terrified or overjoyed. We've just come across a video demo from the University of Pennsylvania's GRASP Lab that shows an autonomous quadrotor helicopter performing "precise aggressive maneuvers." And trust us when we say, nothing in the foregoing sentence is an overstatement -- the thing moves with the speed and grace of an angry bee, while accompanied by the perfectly menacing whine of its little engine. See this work of scientific art in motion after the break.

@Dylbot
it works fine till it tries to dock upside-down
Reminds me of HL2.
@anarfox Indeed, the way they move is uncannily similar to those flying HL2 drones.
Very creepy
This takes a shit all over the Parrot AR Drone.
@Colin S For sure. These guys would make the Parrot AR its bitch in milliseconds.
@Colin S Costs about 1000 times more than the ar.drone will too.
This is either the number one toy this Christmas.
Or the future of government micro-surveillance.
C.
Since when are the two mutually exclusive? Yeah that's right, I just implied the government might use our own electronic gizmos to spy on us!
Ho my.... that's one agressive thing
I wonder how many copters broke during that project. But man, the result pays for all that ...
@jomo Did you see how many were on the floor when it showed that it could pass through 2 copters... Would love to see them fly in formation together... And then do sick tricks and put the Blue Angels out of work... Well everything but that last part...
i'll take 5!
...frelling AWESOME!
all well and good but now the thing is velcro stuck to the wall and useless.
GG
Why don't the university just construct 500 of these, put some kind of weapon on them, and then take over the city?
What's to stop 'the terrorists' from doing this? Screw all this 'blow yourself up' nonsense!
Sweet! I don't want play with my remote controlled helicopter no more, after watching this :)
Deliver 1 million to Strategic Air Command - North American Air Defense, SAC-NORAD complex. _end_
I want one so that I can
DO A BARREL ROLL!
How complex will the remote control for this thing be?
Other than that it's uber cool!
What a FANTASTIC way to deliver explosive munitions.
thats frightening really. reminds me of the drones that take your picture in half-life 2. really impressive for sure though.
Some Developers in Germany already works on this und sell their Quadro-/Hexa-/Octacopters in the whole world. For example some forest fires are already filmed with them,.... And the Army is also interested in them and buy some. And afaik the german developers have some patents on this things. Sry for my bad english. ^^
And an here is a URL to their site (also in english ;-) ):
http://www.asctec.de/
Wow thats amazing :D
I wonder how long before someone attaches a gun to one of those and we get a new wave of warfare :D
Hell yea. That is the coolest thing I've seen in years. Stick a 1080p60 camera on there and I'll take two!
Cheers! Brilliant!
This would make spy UAVs zip accross enemy territories and come unscathed. Team, go for it!
@Venkataraja
No it can't. It is dependent on a camera based position feedback system, without it, it cant do nothing outside the VICON room :P
What I want to know is Can it kill anything can i use it to cut my bread in the morning, can i buzz my neighours house with it,chase em when they try to get in there car etc ? if yes i think would like order 5 or so (same number as what normally attacks people in halflife 2 or skynet ,blah, and blah ,But serious for one moment....you can image the military of thw world looking at this and thinking hello,we need like a million of these ,you could put bombs on em,guns on some, rockets and etc,you could have army of a 5 thousand men and the rest a huge army of autonomus quad man hack things ,with names like r2d2,t800,V.I.N.CENT and Maximilian (last 3 ,which of course would be a huge quad with gatling guns spining blades etc)
Note from Soldiers to Terrorists: "Please get a VICON system installed inside your cave, we want to send a MAV down to check you guys out". :P
I can't help but feel that somewhere, I have gone very wrong with my life.
How do I get a job like this?!
The motion of this quadrocopter reminds me of a skateboard in motion when performing tricks.
HAHA, lol.
Some of my classmates had to build a quadcopter for school and barely managed to get it to stay in balance^^
Well, they've officially got owned.
It is a start though
Now build a skull around it and make it follow me around/deliver paperwork for me and I'll buy one.
Servo-skull here I come!
These remind me of some of the bots from the old Descent games. Creepy, but very cool.
@Zuato Which one(s)? I don't remember them being this agile, or having a particularly "quadrocopter-like" design.
It's like I've died and gone to city 17.
Nice knowing you humans. Our species is now dead.
"off-switch for children", anybody? :-)
"So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish: Blart Versenwald III was a top genetic engineer, and a man who could never keep his mind on the job at hand. When his homeworld was under threat from an invading army, he was tasked with creating an army of super-soldiers to fight them. Instead, he created (among other things) a remarkable new breed of superfly that could distinguish between solid glass and an open window, and also an off-switch for children. Fortunately, because the invaders were only invading because they couldn't cope with things back home, they too were impressed with Blart's creations, and a flurry of economic treaties rapidly secured peace."
damn imagine this thing chasing you with a gun..... NWO NWO NWO NWO
reminds me of the crazy little death helicopters on HL2. Makes me curious as to where they are going with these helicopters.
Can anyone say, Hunter-Killer?
intelligent manhack anyone?
It reminds me of 'batteries not included'!
