Motorola Droid 2 found in Verizon system, keyboard makes an online cameo? (update: specs)
While we've got no way to confirm at the moment, here's some proverbial food for thought. A friendly reader last night published in our comment thread for the two rumored Verizon-bound Motorola devices with the above picture (subtitles added by us), claiming the bottom image is the Droid 2's upgraded QWERTY keyboard. The story goes that his friend had one but no other information is currently available -- the font on the keys is identical, and the mic icon on the bottom left is distinctively Android. If it's legit, we gotta say we're hopeful; the keys look to have a more protruding center à la the CLIQ, which should make typing on the little guy much easier than before. And if it's not the Droid successor, well, it's still something we haven't seen. Could this be the updated QWERTY-fied Android solution we've been waiting for? Time will tell.
Update: Droid Life has what it claims to be a screencap from the Verizon inventory system showing the M1955, a.k.a. Droid 2, hanging out in Ontario, California. Easily fakeable? You betcha, but it's not like the Droid name is going to any other carrier. Interesting food for thought.
Update 2: The original source of the image just got back to us with some purported specs -- and yet again, let's remind you that we can't confirm any of this yet. What we've heard: it's out in the field for testing purposes, it has a 3.7-inch screen, is nearly identical to the original Droid in size and shape, and is chrome instead of black (though that might just be the prototype). And in case you weren't convinced yet, this is definitely not the same as the Shadow.

definitely looks better
@WillSmith
It also has a dedicated voice recognition button, so that means we are guaranteed 2.X
Damn, can I rip the keyboard out of my Droid and install this one? Just 18 more contract months to go...
@WillSmith
Finally they got rid of the stupid dpad and made a normal keyboard.
Woohoo!
@commenter7 Well the droid itself came with 2.0, it'd be a step backward for the sequel to have anything less. You can probably expect 2.2 on this.
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2
Indeed. The phone looks *so* nice apart from that one glaring problem.
@DoctarPeppar
I use my dpad all the time. Editing text is a nightmare with just a touch screen. The dpad is great for gaming too.
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2
Goddamn it, is that you "because it's not google"?
And by the way, i find nothing wrong with the Droid keyboard, i like the short travel of the keys
@DoctarPeppar Until they add a discrete row for the numbers I wouldn't call it a normal keyboard. The G1 was superior in that department!
@WillSmith Hopefully the Droid 2 will be better than Men in Black 2, eh Will?
@WillSmith
Based on the blue secondary keys I'm guessing the phone going to have blue accents
@WillSmith
This actually looks somewhat like the keyboard on my Droid. I have one of the few Droid's shipped with raised keys instead of a flat keypad. The layout on this new one is kinda nice looking, though.
@WillSmith
Heres hoping for a Milestone 2 too... :-/
@Becauseitsnotgoogle2
Is that all you do is troll the non MS phone articles and post nonsense?
Uberfail at life brozef.
@WillSmith
uh oh, not game gripper friendly :(
@sacguy actually if you are the primary line you can upgrade every year on a two year! Call verizon and ask about the "annual upgrade" you sign for ab aditional year and get the two year discount :)
@WillSmith Dam I'm in Ontario can we meet up??
@WillSmith this isn't a droid 2 keyboard...i'm looking at my sisters old at&t HTC phone right now...and it's the same EXACT keyboard. This is a hoax.
@Terrorist DrugDealer Bad Guy Jesus...we need to know where this guy/gal is at quick! I too am in Ontario, and I gotta see this myself...
@masta vaan You of the very few that find it usable. No offense as I love Android but Motorola f***** that keyboard up on the 1st Droid.
@WillSmith I looks like the Shadow in its prototype rumored to be the Nexus Two, something. http://j.mp/nexus-2-phone
Not bad at all, but looks to be inferior to the Touch Pro 2.
@Leindurstit
I've yet to use a mobile device with a keyboard as good as my Touch Pro 2.
@tklr08
My Touch Pro2 would be a dream, If I wasn't running DDvorak on all my other comps... Switching between keyboards affects my speed in both layouts. If it weren't for the low res screen, the MyTouch Slide would be my new hacked phone... I need a good res for remote desktop.
@Leindurstit
I prefer the Palm keyboards and their raised, rounded edges over most 'flat' keyboards.
@Oldarney The obvious solution would be to stop using Dvorak.
@Leindurstit
Agrees.
this < TP2
@Khav
I'd rather quit phones then switch back to Querty. The real solution is to get a big touchscreen android, ie Evo or Mini 5.
@Leindurstit
Your forgetting the size of the Touch Pro 2... its quite big compared to the droid.
@Kamalot I too love the keyboard on Palm's current phones. My Pre has an excellent keyboard.
Now, about the rest of the phone.... *eyeroll*
@Leindurstit
Agreed:
The keyboards need to be set up so yo ucan use them without looking.
Raised keys that have space between the keys to separate them so you can "feel" your way through typing instead of being forced to look.
If Sharp could do this in the 1990's with their "Wizard" handhelds, these companies should be able to do it 10 years later.
Look like the samsung glide almost
@Cam I find it pretty good, if not solid. But then again, I have a Pre Plus, and not a launch one at that . . .
Looks a lot like the Touch Pro 2 keyboard.
@ViperVin
you mean touch pro 1, right?
it doesn't look nice as the Droid's keyboard.
(I never thought that I'd call the droid's keyboard nice)
it has an extra chunk of plastic at the end (the "chin") which means it probably is the droid 2
@nerd
Thought the same exact thing
RAISED BUTTONS! PRAISE THE MOTOROLA LORDS!
@Nitesh
Eh... My Droid's keys aren't flat, along with many others. Not sure why they produced two different types of keyboards, but I'm definitely not complaining about mine!
@SFR
Same here, but my friend's keyboard is flat.
@Maj
My keys look an awful a lot like the ones in the bottom image.
Word, my droid's keyboard doesn't bother me. It just took some getting used to.
@Nitesh
6 months of near constant use has caused the keys on my droid to look very similar to the "droid 2" keyboard. I don't think they made 2 different keyboards. Constant use of the physical keyboard wears down the corners of the keys and causes them to be domed over time.
@ceejw
Mine were raised since I bought it. Could never figure out why people were calling it flat / hard to use until people started posting pictures.
@ceejw There actually is two types of keyboards, I have the one with the raised keys. All of my friends have the flat keys. The flat ones take less effort to press, but its easier to find your way around the bumpy one. I just use Swype now though :/
@ceejw agreed, I love my broken-in droid keyboard. I've become very proficient at it.
@kdotlo you have one too?! I've yet to run across someone with raised keys like my own
Give it Snapdragon or better and vanilla froyo (no pun intended) and I'm sold
@KeegdnaB Defiantly will have all that, but probably not Snapdragon.
Probably an OMAP3630 processor, like the Shadow/Xtreme. Its just as good, if not better. :)
@EggoEspada I would disagree with that, OMAP3630 has a 720 MHz Cortex-A8 chip while Snapdragons are generally 1 GHz. They are roughly have equal performance clock-for-clock, so the Snapdragon chip wins. The PowerVR SGX 530 GPU can push out 14 million triangles per second while the Snapdragon can put out 22 million triangles per second, which is again a Snapdragon victory.
