Hey Google, shall we
try the other box? Maybe it has hardware acceleration built in for your new
WebM video format? Intel's Wilfred Martis has told
IDG News that his company is keeping a close eye on Google's new VP8-based format, and should it prove popular enough, hardware acceleration for it will be built into the
CE4100 and other Atom chips headed to TVs and overpowered cable boxes in the future:
Just like we did with other codecs like MPEG2, H.264 & VC1, if VP8 establishes itself in the Smart TV space, we will add it to our [hardware] decoders.
Not exactly astonishing news, as
Google TV is still likely to proceed on those chips with WebM getting decoded by software in the mean time, but at least Intel's absenteeism from the WebM
hardware partner list can now be explained as simple precaution, rather than some deeper division between the companies.
stupid intel, just include support already, as if it isn't going to take off! Cheapskates!
@hajj3 Hey, that logo looks famili- oh.... wait a minute
@hajj3 yeah who knew 64bit processors took off
@Coke
hasnt apple only added 64 bit processors to their products recently?
my friend was bragging about how amazing it is when i shocked him with the fact that windows devices have had it for ages
@HoldenMccrotch
Are you serious? If you're talking about the hardware (processors), Apple uses the same processors that any computer (PC) uses.
In fact, inside the aluminium body, it's exactly the same as any other computer.
@hajj3
Google has MANY friends, I think Apple will learn the lesson the HARD WAY.
@hajj3
Exactly. First thing I thought when I read this was: "oh, so Intel is going to be late to the game, again, to add hw acceleration that's probably sub-standard and overdue, compared to the competition".
I mean, how long did it take Intel to release a freaking GPU that decodes high-bitrate H264 in hardware... It's only since the very last GMA chips that you can actually play H264 video on an Atom-based system. Which is particularly ridiculous if you imagine that a puny Nvidia Gefore 2 MX could already do it through purevideo 2 years ago, and still had processing power to spare to enhance the image though all kinds of filters. I'm not making this up.
Intel: If everyone else does it then so will we.
Awesome way to push technology to new heights, Intel! If everybody was like you...oh...wait...they are.
I thought intel was soppised 2 b an innovative leader in silicon? I guess Google has taken the job! I bet Steve Jobs WILL Learn the HARD WAY...
just wait till steve and company decide to make their own x86 chip
..what a bad joke. Instead of putting a decent graphic chip able to decode h.264 inside pinetrail, they badly neutered the 3150.
And they even forbid nVidia to build a more decent chipset for the N4x0 and the new Dxxx. Real assholes to now come bragging with 2x1080p hardware decode capabilties.
