Samsung i897: the answer to your AT&T Android dreams?
Tired of your woeful selection of Android devices on AT&T? We hear you. Now buck up Mr. Sad Britches 'cause Samsung's riding to your rescue. AndroidGuys has a purportedly leaked Samsung handset it's calling the i897 that looks very similar to the Galaxy S specwise: 4-inch AMOLED display, Android 2.1 (for the moment anyway), and 5 megapixel camera. It's built around a Snapdragon processor apparently, and even goes well with chicken. Now hit up the source for a few more pics.

So can someone PLEASE tell me the difference between LCD, LED, AMOLED, OLED, WVGA, and Super WVGA screens? Maybe a tier list or something, the pros and cons of each one, or the main ones. I really honestly have no idea.
@TheHypnotist
How about you stop being lazy and get your butt over to Wikipedia.
@TheHypnotist
LCD - Liquid Crystal Display
LED - Light Emitting Diode
OLED - Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED is a variation of OLED using a thin film transistor active matrix)
WVGA and super WVGA are wide screen resolutions above VGA (video graphics array) such as 800x480 or 854x480.
Search wikipedia if you want to know more.
@TheHypnotist
There is google search for you, but let me extremity simplify
TFT- LCD film with backlight
OLED - No backlight source.(LCD rapes back light...oh wait. Backlight rapes LCD)
AMOLED - one of OLED technology type
Super AMOLED - No extra touch sensor layer require (AMOLED rapes touch sensor)
@raiden8383 Thanks for that explanation, I never would've understood display technology without the context of violent sexual crime.
Just release it and then I can use the Plastic wrap as a case and not buy the iPhone again.
The likelihood of this getting 2.2 with tethering, probably close to zero.
Really, if you care about OS updates, there's no point in buying anything else other than the Nexus One.
@ddddd
that depends on where u live
It's a Samsung phone, and it's on AT&T. Although it might look appealing on the surface, you know inside it's made of pure evil. It's the phone Cthulhu would use to order a pizza.
This could be the Galaxy S, but if it is, don't get the idea of saying this phone will have exclusivity with just AT&T. The Galaxy S is going to be deployed on all carriers.
@JRunSW20
Not according to the Samsung rep I talked to a few days ago
@liljon619 This pic on a AMOLED phone looks beautiful

After what happened with the Behold + AT&T's network, I'd avoid this one like the Plague.
The only problem is , when it comes to cell phones, samsung could ruin a wet dream
I'm just waiting for the shadow then i'm heading over to verizon. AT&T has the WORST selection of phones ever.
after hearing about the Behold 2 and those issues, I ain't going anywhere near another Samsung phone for a long ass time!
While I'm on AT&T (with another year and don't want to pay ETF) and have been SO hoping for a decent Android to show up (which is in part why I don't understand aaronbustillos comment above: every other android phone on att? They only HAVE 1), I'm still holding out for Dell's phones to show up. I have a samsung phone now (the lowly impression that cost an arm and a leg) and hate that samsung hasn't done ANY upgrades. I know understand the frustration with Samsung and won't be getting another. The phone is ok, but zero support and no downloadable widgets kind of sucks. If AT&T can let this one go out their doors w/o screwing it up, I'll have hope for Dell's phones.
@evilbonsai AT&T has announced two: the Motorola Backflip and the Dell Aero, but the Aero is not available yet.
@MrHashbrown which is why I said they only have 1, and yes, it is crippled as previously stated. The other isn't available yet and so far, it's listed as being NOT crippled. I was also referring to the to-be-released-some-time-in-the-future Dell phones Lightning and Thunder. Still waiting to see how the Windows 7 phones do in general, though. But then again, I just might break down and get a Streak.
This is my next phone provided AT&T doesn't cripple it to please lord Jobs.
I am 90% sure that the galaxy s isn't coming to att. We will be getting this variant which is ok news.
But the good news is that we can buy the galaxy s unlocked overseas and enjoy unrestricted goodness of the phone on the att 15 dollar data plan.
@damian
just like when the Nexus One came out. Then they started catching it and the cheap fun was over. If you want steak then don't expect to pay for a hamburger.
@Waltah im still using my nexus one with att on the 15 dollar plan. They apparently were mainly getting the tmobile version. As for the att version the only people seem to get caught were the ones who were on a 30 dollar data plan or so.
Besides i hardly call att steak ... they are more like street meat you buy on a cart on the side of the road.
@damian
I dont know anything about the variants, but the guy (marketing) I know who has one was calling it a galaxy. Yea he could be an idiot or whatever, but he gets all the new toys to make sure all our bloatware works on it...lol
I want a full fledged HTC phone with latest Android Froyo(for now) on AT&T with no crippling at all ! Will that ever happen?
@redeyeskranti um....yea, it's called the nexus one...
@zephxiii I want it for 200 $ on contract. Will I get it?
@ddddd AT&T works perfect for me in Raleigh, NC. Now o know they suck when yiu leave the city, but in Raleigh I get better signal than any other carrier, and I don't go far so it's not a big deal to me.
Ok first of all I like to apologize to you guys for my last two comments on the lady with the iPad no CASH article, and for my comment on the Dell Streak. Sometimes I overreact on certain products and don't care for them so I'll calm down next time. Second I doubt if we ever get a high powered device for AT&T. I'm still giving them till the end of June to come out with the DESIRE OR LEGEND OR X10. Cause it looks like AT&T is being completely idiots for not delivering us any MORE HIGH POWERED DEVICE, JUST sickens me to my stomach and their still kissing up to APPLE AND STEVE JOBS ASS for not doing their job for us the consumers. I've been with them for so long 9yrs. Now looks like I'll be leaving to move to Sprint after the Mobile Conference next week if I don't see X10, or the HTC Desire for AT&T.
@Inspector Gadget80 Exactly! That's why I am switching to the Evo from my iPhone. The service has been good, but the phone selection went down the tubes after 2007...
when? can't wait any longer for a good phone.
A four inch slab running stock android? I'll take that. Don't screw this one up AT&T.
is the plastic wrap included i could sure use some!
@businessman25....I don't know what Samsung Rep you talked to or that you talked to one at all but T-Mobile will be getting the Galaxy S first. Release date is poised to be within the first week of July.
They better not make this phone like a piece of crap the Backflip is.
at&t might be calling this phone the Samsung Captivate.
Meh I try to believe that AT&T isn’t that bad but they do have a questionable track record. If your not sure about how AT&T restricts Android handsets you should check out the article on it at http://getyourgadgetsgoing.com/2010/06/20/why-wont-att-set-android-free/
