X2 promises a clutch of elusive iTablets for Computex
We're gearing up for Computex, and so is X2, apparently. The iTablet (which has been announced and then failed to materialize in the past) will be making an appearance at the show with not one but five variants. Seems like they're throwing the kitchen sink at us to see what will stick, eh? According to JKK Mobile we can, look forward to no less than three Intel-sportin' devices (including the iTablet Lite, which features a 10.1-inch display and 1.6GHz Atom CPU and both the T23A and T23X tablets with Core 2 Duo 743 1.30GHz CPU and 12.1-inch display) as well as a pair of 10.1-inch bad boys including the iTablet Speed-Lite (Nvidia Tegra 2 1GHz, 1GB RAM, 512MB NAND Flash storage) and the iTablet Ex-Lite II, which is pretty much the same but for the Freescale 800MHz CPU. The latter two will rock either Windows CE 6 or Android 2.0, apparently. We'll hold out for prices and actual product before passing judgement, but until then you can hit the source link -- you know, if you've never seen rendered images of vaporware tablets.

I've lost faith in any of these iPad competitors and as janky as the WiFi is, I went ahead and bought another one. I don't love it yet, but it's slowly growing on me. I'm enjoying it as a comic book reader.
@malexandria1
Im almost there too lol. Im sick of hearing about all these amazing Tegra2 Android tablets with awesome specs that just never come out >.> or your stop hearing about them. So lame. Come on people give the iPad some competition.
@malexandria1
whats the rush? most people interested in a tablet probably have a laptop or other computer. so let them take their time and make something worthwhile, whoever that manages to be, eventually. The notion ink Adam looks like it might offer enough other features to work for me. there is nothing the iPad has in its current form to really make me interested in buying it, I have an iPod touch and don't care about 3G for now.
@malexandria1
im just glad there's no suicided today
where is sue?
@Twoleaf, on vacation.
Hopefully we can get some performance reviews out of the new Tegra 2 chip, thats the most promising part of this tech. If they do try to bring this out they'd better stick with Android or some other really lean OS because I just don't think the hardware is there yet to preserve user experience on Windows 7.
@Bhima
W7 and OS X are never coming to tablets because they use too many CPU cycles, just give it up already.
@Ed T Yup, never ever EVAR. All we can hope for in the future is less powerful and more restricted software because CPU's are apparently not going to get any faster or more efficient.
Srsly though, compact computer hardware that is fast enough to run full blown OS's while maintaining reasonable battery life will eventually be commonplace. When this will happen I don't know, I'd like to think in a few years, but however long it actually takes it WILL happen.
And the iPad still will not be able to play Flash.
@m00g00
And flash won't matter in 10 years.
@Vdek Of course, Flash paved the way for sites like YouTube for the last 5 years and before that it was used extensively throughout the internet.
In fact, Flash has been around since 1996 and since around 1999, has become a common place plug-in. I specifically remember in 2000 working on a Flash project and having no worry that Flash wasn't installed on enough browsers.
So for more than a decade, Flash has existed - constantly evolving. There is no reason to believe that Flash won't continue to evolve.
But, if you compare the HTML spec... HTML4 was "recommended" in 1999 then "published" in 2001. It has taken 9 years to get us to an almost-complete HTML5 spec, that still won't be published for a couple years.
I have no doubt that Flash will be around in 10 years. The only real replacement that I see is Silverlight. Considering that it will be built into WinPho7, it has a chance of winning developers (assuming Microsoft does well with their new phone OS).
But just like now, Flash provides features that fill a huge gap in the HTML spec for delivering rich-media to clients on the Internet. Unlike browsers, it provides pixel-perfect replication of content across multiple platforms and even across browsers. When you develop rich-media content, there is something to be said for knowing that your work is going to look correctly everywhere without having to "code" it for each browser/OS combination.
And for this clue... no charge.
Does X2 have any claim to fame in the past? I'm dying to get a tablet with full windows capabilities, but I'm holding out to see if;
a) this materializes at all
b) the quality/usability is good.
stupid names, but the tegra2-tablet looks promising.
steve jobs is just going to blow it to pieces
@dgtlber No kidding. The guy is so filled with hot air all he needs to do is ignite it around the competition and *kaboom*.
How does he remain safe from the massive explosion you wonder? His ego shield powered by the ignorant dreams of fanboys everywhere.
Oh, and the unicorn horn up his ass.
More Vaporware. No thanks.
Getting quite tired of these promises and at the last minute, they either cancel the whole project OR move it back another 6 months.
Screw it. Ill stick with my iPad for the time being. Til something REAL comes out...
finally, a tablet that doesn't look like a direct ipad knock-off. But still, i am just as doubtful as the rest of you on its performamce
at least it doesnt sound like something that goes in your underwear
I am not against the "me-too" hardware makers, but all these vapor-dreams are getting annoying. Put up or shut up. When Engadget has a unit in their hands to review, then maybe I'll check out your order page.
Some day the geeks will get their true tablet.
Maybe.
I think everyone waiting for a good tablet is starting to get pissed. I know I am. Month after month of announcements and *never any releases*... and no, the joojoo does not count (because its a piece of shit).
