Dell Streak's Gorilla Glass screen: torture tested for your amusement (video)
So we've been hearing rumors about the Dell Streak being some kind of a rugged bad boy. Word is, the Gorilla Glass display on this 5-inch slate is good enough to withstand pretty much anything a human would care to throw its way. Them's fighting words where we come from, so we did the only thing a responsible tech blog can do -- we put them to the test. Should you be brave enough to follow us after the break, you'll come upon our best efforts to destroy our own Streak prototype, albeit with little success. Then again, the end result might be less important than the journey there, which is not to be missed.

damn that things looks good...
@SteveyAyo
That's what she said
@Ic3Cold i saw that coming
@SteveyAyo
Good looks from dell are rare if you ask me... I really think they could have done a better job with the alienware m11x
@lars1110
Thats what she said.
@furquanatique just saw this on my nexus one with froyo! :)
@SteveyAyo
...talk about a dell-gasm!
@SteveyAyo
dude, you're getting a Dell
do this test to the nexus one
@SteveyAyo
I have to reserve my opinion until I see the comparison video :b
@SteveyAyo
Two observations:
Firstly, I'd have liked to have seen a screwdriver used rather than a pen, although seriously I think I could have put that pen through the glass, I think his stabbing was half-hearted.
Secondly, I'd also liked to have seen then same tests done to the other handsets on the table.
:-)
Although no doubt some droid fans would have set up some sort of Anti Droid Cruelty Society in a flash!
@SteveyAyo Why is there like sugar on the table?
@MoonWalkerCTE
Hehe, thats where he spends all day stabbing the desk until he realised it would be more fun to stick it to a dell instead.....something the rest of us figured out a long time ago, hehehe
@inertone haha nice me too. I love that i can now watch Engadget videos in the browser on the Nexus One because of Flash
@Oldarney Dell is quickly becoming one of my favorite tech companies... the onslaught of amazing phones they leaked and the slate devices and tablets (SPARTA!!!) are all extremely well designed and simple
That being said my next phone is still a mondrian, but if that dell lightning comes out with better specs than the leak its on
@SteveyAyo
Dude stabs like a pussy -- he should have put some muscle into it ffs.
@inertone
i couldnt see the video on my stupid ipod touch. had to jump on the laptop just to see this vid.
heres hoping android froyo gets ported over to ipod touch 3g soon!
@SteveyAyo
I have to admit I got a sick feeling in my stomach as I watched them do that. God its amazing how durable that thing is? And that is quite a large screen.
I'd love to see how it will fit into a pocket though...honestly.
And is this for AT&T? Or Sprint?
@doug
nice try
@SteveyAyo
Can you guys do some tests by dropping it on hardwood floors/concrete?
OWWWW!!!! OWWW!!! OUCH!!!! OWWWW!!! OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!
Have mercy...
@SteveyAyo
Regardless of whether the glass is damaged it is obvious that the LCD behind the glass is being damaged by each blow. I honestly hope that you don't mind the dead pixels that appear after this test.
@MoonWalkerCTE Why is there an Apple product on the table, and why isn't he stabbing that instead?
@TheRogueFFAngel
I thought it was intended for AT&T but ended up getting on O2 because they didnt feel enough american buyers want a phone that big...
I could be wrong tho.
Wish verizon was getting it...
@SteveyAyo i wish they did some more brutal tests. something like razors and kitchen knives. theres a vid on youtube of it on gorilla glass with meat cleavers and no scratches.
@SteveyAyo Now if only they would get their customer service up to speed. I do warranty work for them and the #1 thing I hear from customers when I get onsite to repair a system is the amount of time they are on the hone with Dell and the insane crap they are asking them to do to trouble shoot an issue. Techs that are 100% reliant on scripts are useless.
@New Reformation I don't see the LCD being damaged... The blue circles looke like a way to trace a finger/object. If the object is not even scratching the glass, there is no way the LCD can even be touched...
@dark star not a chance untill Google releases the source. knowledge is power
@SteveyAyo
I just tried that on my phone and I didn't cause damage either. It doesn't have gorilla glass. I think the pen stabbing test is lame.
do a test that would actually break a normal phone's glass.
@MoonWalkerCTE that aint sugar...
@John Doe
I think that depends on the country. My experience with the Dell support in Germany and Finland is excellent (in Singapore not so much it seems, though I didn't call them). Yes, they go by a check list, but I see their point in doing so, and when they are through they are extremely fast and helpful. (I do have the plan where they come to your home to repair the laptop.)
Anyway, painful video, but extremely impressive. I do not think an iPhone would have survived that. Perhaps my next phone is a Dell, if they can get a good community for ROMs and don't try to stop people from installing custom ROMs.
@prodigypv Hard to say - if the device has a capacitive screen, a standard pen won't be detected by the display at all (hence why a standard stylus won't work with the iPhone).
@prodigypv the glass might flex enough to hit the screen below it.
@ninjaskllz Yep a re-test would be great to see if this one is really concrete or not, but this one is really making me want this tablet already http://bit.ly/amazing-tablet-streak
@drh - why so depressed??
@JS
i dont know what phone you have at all but guaranteed most phones would be at least damaged if stabbed with a pen, my friend knocked his itouch from his desk onto a radiator and the entire screen is smashed (though, it still works, just cant see things very well...)
this is rather good, plus i saw no damaged pixels (something apple has problems with even without being stabbed...)
Please, do it for iPhone!
@Blayze04 How do you get it to play on Android? All it does on my N1 is hang on "Loading video information". :-(
@TheRogueFFAngel umm cargo pants or shorts soory angel if it wont fit in your tight jordash jeans hehehe
@Ignoramus Lol totally. He stabs the Dell and then he says "Now lets try this with the iphone" oops
@Ignoramus HAHA!
@Oldarney
Dell doesn't design the Alienware series. They merely bought the company. It's still designed by the original Alienware crew.
@schultz
It is coming to AT&T by the end of the summer. It was released on O2 first. Michael Dell said so himself. Now it's just a matter of waiting for AT&T to announce it. Just wish it had at least 2.1 and not 1.6.
@MoonWalkerCTE
That's cocaine, Engadget editors can afford better than a sugar high.
@drh So I am guessing you walk around with a screw driver in your pocket. Easily fixed, first move your phone to your other pocket. Second lose to screw driver. Third quit going mike myers on your phone.
I just like that I can have a phone at work without the possibility of scratching it. I don't need it to stop random screw drivers being shot at me.
@MoonWalkerCTE That's not sugar, it's blow. It makes more sense. After all, he's frantically stabbing a phone with a pen.
@drlisbon Theres better tests than this already done on the nexus one.
EXCESSIVE SCREEN TEST ON NEXUS ONE. This guy uses keys, and the sharp end of Scissors. and still no scratch on the Nexus One's Industrial Glass.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfqwKa4bT74
@maedox You need Froyo 2.2 and Flash 10.1
Instead of just one point stabbing, how about testing it by scrubbing a key? I mean this is what people want to know, when they put the thing inside a pocket together with a bunch of keys.
@pika2000
you have 2 pockets right?
why would you put your phone with your keys?
