Dell Streak's Gorilla Glass screen: torture tested for your amusement (video)
So we've been hearing rumors about the Dell Streak being some kind of a rugged bad boy. Word is, the Gorilla Glass display on this 5-inch slate is good enough to withstand pretty much anything a human would care to throw its way. Them's fighting words where we come from, so we did the only thing a responsible tech blog can do -- we put them to the test. Should you be brave enough to follow us after the break, you'll come upon our best efforts to destroy our own Streak prototype, albeit with little success. Then again, the end result might be less important than the journey there, which is not to be missed.

@Vlad Savov just the photo had nexus one and desire next to it... and I am not going to give my desire for destruction.
@Vlad Savov just the photo has desire and nexus next to it, so I was lead by that and no I won't give my desire for destruction...
@Dking7 I am pretty sure those phones are there from the engadget app test.
Well that made for some painful viewing.
OMG That is amazing glass!
Everything must have this glass on it!
@Drybones5 Many things already do.
damn! I'm still in love with the evo though
he took that thing to town!
Just curious did you do the same on the nexus one and desire? If so, were the results too horrific to be out on camera?
Did the scrolling get a little laggy from all the damage (or lack thereof)?
@Vuke Everything's working fine as usual. :)
Same test with an iPhone please
@ddddd
It will break in a flash, but it won't run it
@ddddd
it would if it HAD flash.....
@ddddd, that's precisely the reason to do it *whistle*
now hammer and the nail
that thing is tough. wow.
Disturbing content
Maybe you should add a "do not try this at home" disclaimer. I could see a little kid watching this video then going to town on his parent's phone...
@SteveyAyo
Am I only one who expect that they will do same test on N1?
They are coward :)
Yea right, gimme that pen, I'll show you how its done.
@ZuurKen
My thoughts exactly, half-hearted, I'd have made ink meet processor, straight through the heart.
Then throw all 3 devices into a blender and see which one stays recognisable for the longest :-)
*shudders*
It's pretty durable.
gimme gimme
finally...
as a pre owner i'm really sick,and tired of cheap parts. We now scratch resistant body, and screen. Hopefully my next phone won't need a pouch.
@Nimer55 The Pre is the only smartphone I've had out of iPhone, Tour, Hero and Droid that was so delicate, flimsy, weak and cheap.
Most other phones out there are built a lot better and have glass, not plastic, screens that don't scratch easily at all. Unlike the Pre.
@JONNNathannn
I know, that's why i said as a pre owner, but still this is much better than most. I doubt you can do that with an iPhone. I just don't think a consumer should have to panic when he drops his phone. IT should be like "oops, aw well'.
Tony Stark's LG glass smart phone is probably made from Gorilla Glass
Am I the only one that thought he was going to do the same thing to the Nexus One and HTC Desire for comparison.
@Bud92 No but I wish they did. I mean didn't HTC say don't put your phone in your pocket? So I guess that speaks for itself.
Great device. Want one of those. Hope some of these great Android phones that have been popping up lately start showing up. Customers in the USA get a very poor selection of any phones compared to our friends across the pond in the UK. They have almost every great android phone available right now for their choice.
That must be the most resistive touchscreen ever.
@ShadowMaker SdR
I see what you did there!
I bet sand will scratch it.
I have a Droid (the original one) that supposedly has this "Gorilla Glass" as well. The thing that did me in, scratch-wise, was this: I play golf, and I use my Droid with FreeCaddie to give me GPS yardage. I have a thin "sleeve" type phone cover. It's open at the top, and the phone just slides in and out. It adds very little bulk, it's stiff enough to offer screen cracking protection, and it was cheap. Problem is, when you fix divots on the greens, you inevitably pick up some sand with your divot tool, which transfers into your pocket. A grain of that sand apparently got into my sleeve-type case. The case pushed it into the screen while it was in my pocket, and it made a scratch on the screen. It's small, and I don't notice it when the screen is on, but it still irritates me. If you play golf and carry your phone, keep it far away from any sand. It's one of the few things that can scratch this glass.
@NerveBag
I think sand will pretty much scratch anything outside of diamonds.
Was I the only one waiting for him to do it the Nexus One sitting next to the Dell next?...
I'm far more interested in seeing something like sandpaper taken to this thing. No phone I've had has ever taken a pen jab or something remotely similar, but they've all been roughed up by keys in the pocket or concrete floor.
@meauounji Careful. I asked the same question about keys, and all the nerds are getting butthurt. I concur though, multiple-point abrasive action is more representative of a real-life "torture" than just a single point stabbing.
IM just going to try that on my neighbours new ipad ... I will let you all know how I get on ....
DavidDB later died.
Fuck yeah Gorilla Glass!
COWON uses that as the material for s9's screen. I've taken a god damn kitchen knife to it and not so much a scratch appears.
But Will It Blend?
I'd love to see this in Dell's upcoming Windows phone 7. I've busted two screens by putting phones in my pocket with keys. Covers increase the size and wreck the form-factor, while belt clips make you look ridiculous.
obviously there's an apple keyboard in the back. silly engadget.
Yes but will it blend?
Put this on the next HPalm device please
Does this damage the components inside, though?
THat wasn't red ink....that was blood...Ur killing the poor thing.
I wish engadget hires an intern to encode their videos to html5 for nonflash mobile users...
