HTC EVO 4G gets hacked Froyo port, Sense UI be damned
You know what happens when you give EVO 4Gs to a room full of some of the brightest developers the world has to offer? Well, [expletive] is going to go down, that's what -- so it comes as little surprise that the phone's already been blessed with a seemingly functional Froyo port, even though neither the phone nor the operation system have even seen a public release yet. The largest distribution of the EVO so far has come at the hands of Google itself, which provided the Android 2.1- and Sense-equipped handsets to attendees of its recent IO conference; a timely upgrade to Android 2.2 has unquestionably been a big sticking point for would-be buyers, though, so it's good to see that early owners are already hard at work making this happen. Root is naturally required for the 2.2 port to work -- and there will undoubtedly be some hurdles to overcome to make this totally usable -- but we have full faith in these lovely wunderkinds. Follow the break for video evidence of a Froyo'd EVO in the wild.

So true.
@dalex7777 So true.
@rhomaion I didn't even mean to reply to this comment.
How about that 2 h battery life?
@rhomaion
It's right here http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/85497-tip-trick-61-hours-24-battery-remaining.html
@magadget
Quoted from Chris Ziegler's review of the Evo4G found here:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/19/htc-evo-4g-review/
"Amazingly, we got some three hours and 13 minutes of run time while using the EVO continuously as a 4G hotspot -- and when we say "continuously," we mean we were streaming high-quality audio the entire time. What's more, the phone wasn't even fresh off the charger when we started; it had been on and in heavy use for two hours and four minutes prior. Bottom line, this thing seems to be a champion on a 1500mAh battery"
So to recap: 2 hours of regular usage + 3 hours of hotspot functionality (and if you had listened to last weeks podcast, they stated that they were also using the phone while it was acting as a hotspot)...
If my math is right, and I'm fairly sure it is, 5 > 2
@magadget
The ability to have multiple charged batteries is priceless. You can simply switch out the batteries and go. Can you do that with the iphone?
Plus, 2h life sounds good if you are watching videos the whole time.
@Yourdogsdead um thats incredible, thanks for linking to that
@marcram Not an iPhone use (Droid Incredible owner), but if you were to carry a spare battery around, then it's just the same as an iPhone user carrying around their external backup battery. The only difference is that you can attach it to your phone to quickly charge the battery up vs removing the back cover and having to turn the phone off while you swap the battery. I don't see a big difference between the 2 methods, so I don't get when people complain that certain products don't have a removable battery. Btw, the incredible has a good enough battery to last a full day, so I never even thought about a spare...of course it does not have 4G.
@magadget
In the hood we would PIMP slap you for that remark!
@dwalker19
You scamming H0m0 I'm reporting you!
y are there still no commercials for the evo4g? I just saw a add for the incredible on tv. Dammit sprint
@justosac They will have commercials after the phone drops on June 4th, don't worry about that. It's selling just fine w/o commercials right now, just wait .....
@justosac Heh those Incredible ads just anger me because there are a lot of us (including myself) who want to buy one/have already paid for one and are being put on hold for weeks on end due to supply shortages (also I'm sure Verizon isn't happy about all the people deciding to pick up other phones rather than wait it out... the Incredible sales have no doubt been highly effected by the delays).
@DBG You hit the nail right on the head there. My friend's LG Chocolate just fritzed out on him a week ago and I told him to go pick up a Droid Incredible. He came back with some Samsung phone. When I asked him why, he said he tried to get an Incredible but they told him they wouldn't have any for a few more weeks.
This AMOLED shortage is going to end up being a real downer for Verizon (and HTC I'd assume).
Now, it's officially badass. Froyo >>>> Sense UI, in my book.
If only it were a world phone.
O man the thought of having a 4g without having to use that fugly sense UI... Do WANT!
Sense UI is the whole reason i am ordering a nexus one next week. The theming and carrier/phone based apps are ridiculous and its such a shame google let this crap happen.
@magic6435 Just turn it off on the phone
The only thing that would make the phone perfect is AMOLED.
@cdf74dc9 Actually that might not be true at this moment in time considering the shortage of such screens. Also there are a few features via Android apps that don't work with them (like IR barcode scanning off of the screen). There is a really cool app if you are like me and have tons of "price club" keyrings (it lets you take a picture of the code on the various keyrings so when you go to checkout you don't have to scramble through them, you just pop it up on your Android-powered phone and they can use their IR readers to scan that). It works for LED readers, but very few places have those because they are more expensive (in fact, CVS is the only place I can think of atm where I see them often).
They're rooting and froyo-ing a phone that's not even out yet, but companies like Motorola and Samsung with all their capital can't update past 1.5? Really?
@JaylanPHNX
I am not a fan of Samsung! My samsung impression sucks!
Yup . . . I thought it would be done soonest -- albeit, not quite This quick. and why not? If you switch off Sense on the EVO, what you end up with is a large Nexus One and it's rather easy to put Android 2.2 on the Nexus One. Now, I'm not saying that I would do that on a new phone, were I to have the EVO. But, I have to admit that I would be thinking about it -- and would surely get around to it sooner or later if HTC didn't provide. . . . lol
Froyo!! Seriously being one version back on sense ui is not worth it imo. Sense is ok but I always come back to stock on my nexus one.
My favorite feature of sense ui was the smoothness of the homescreen. Luckily there is now a launcher on the market called "Launcherpro" that mimics the smoothness perfectly. If only they improved how to copy text...
@k e n The "SenseUI" also contains some features that go beyond the UI itself (at least on the Incredible). That being said, either HTC or preferably even Google should really come up with some standards that separate UI and the Android OS basecode. Sadly I don't see this happening because Google has always had the attitude that they want the phone makers to run wild and do what they want, but it sure annoys us MotoBlur/Sense/etc users (esp. when not given a choice about it) when we have to wait longer for OS updates (some critical or at the very least, add much more functionality) because our manufacturer wanted to try and make their UI stand out. I want the 2.2 update for the new JS and JIT runtimes.
@DBG
Agreed. I really wish Google (or the manufacturers) would allow us to ACTUALLY turn the UIs on and off (meaning everything to do with it, not just a homescreen replacement) and run stock android separately when we choose to. It would make updates so much easier, and it may even help fix some of the issues with fragmentation. I really wanted Froyo on the EVO. It's gonna suck having such a huge screen without Flash running smoothly on it.
I hope they get all of froyo working. When they get the hot-spot functionality running, goodbye $30/mo. It wont replace my cable internet quite yet, once 4g hits my area....goodbye comcast too!
I admit I got it wrong — I saw the headline saying “Android 2.2's Froyo goodness hitting the Nexus One already” and coupled with the article “Android 2.2 Froyo manual update found, now available for select Nexus One devices” assumed it was available for some Nexus One devices.
That said I stand by my comments I think the Android upgrade process is ridiculous and I don't see why all me comments should be downranked for pointing this out. And being called an “ass monkey” and a “troll” and all this other stuff, well that's just entertaining…
You can offer all the excuses you like, skins, hardware carriers, it's Google's mess to fix.
did you really censor the word SHIT... seriously??? whoever things it needs to be censored needs to be kicked in the nuts more then a few times, stupid fucking people giving words more power then they should have... (but its still ok to say ASS)
@FireStorm We don't use expletives in news, no; in this case, I just thought it was funny to censor myself rather than use a different line.
@FireStorm You must also remember that some schools (not just K-12), libraries, offices, etc would block stories if "inappropriate language" was use. I'm sure we all could fill in the blank if needed, and really most of the time swearing is used when the person isn't intelligent enough to find a better way to express their ideas.
@Chris Ziegler I bet you curse like a sailor after a few *insert your drink of choice here* though =p.
This is really matter of common sense to me. The power of a word is not found in the word itself, but in the manner in which it is used.
Sadly I see you have to obey laws since this isn't a personal board. But defending it personally is out of the question.
Words have power that people give them, as well as the tone in which people use those words, I wish more people would realize that.
Watch V for Vendetta if you want an excellent play on words and the power they "can" possess.
only when Android 2.2 (Froyo) becomes fully supported (minus HTC Sense UI) on the EVO will i even remotely consider joining Sprint and buying a unit. i still prefer the idea of owning an unlocked Nexus One in conjunction with a cheap prepaid SIM from T-Mobile. these two-year contracts for subsidized phones nonsense has to stop. i would gladly pay more for an unleashed handset. only Google seems to understand.
This device is a game-changer, as polarizing as it is. you think apple would care about a front facing camera if google and htc didnt do it? you think winmo devices would care about running flash content and rendering excellent video a-la internet if this phone wasn't coming out? I'm prolly not gonna be one of the first 1,000 people to get this device, but the 4g/wifi hotspot/excellent hardware specs/videochat capability is gonna keep it around for a long time, on sprint at least. These are the kinds of articles that Palm wished they had with the Pre device, which I almost got when it was released. God I can't wait to hold one of these in my hands!
so when is the how-to tutorial coming out? I'd like to get a test drive on froyo for my EVO 4G
Great, and here I am still waiting for the Froyo port for the HTC Desire...
@djind Froyo already been port to HTC desire.... check xda developer website and Defrost thread =)
@TaIz Nice, I was still kind of iffy about rooting. But I now read the bricking issues has been fixed somewhat. I will just wait for a couple of days and see what happens with the rooting (probably Paul from Modaco) and a fully functional Froyo (XDA-Devs). Thanks for the heads up.
yess! hopefully the wifi tethering works for 4G
Buglessbeast 1.1 ...is all you need. Runs very fast and cool. BTW.. it is Bugless!
I currently use an iPhone, but I used to use Android. I think both OS's are awesome! Actually, I just like tech in general, but I just don't get why people cant just like what they like sans flaming. The flame wars were funny at first, now they're getting old. anyone with me?
@holmboi
yea its dumb, ive had both nexus one and 3gs, now i sold both because i want to give this BEAST a try
Kudos to xda developers as always. But this also makes one wonder what the HTC firmware engineers are getting paid to do? HTC in terms of customer support is probably the worst handset maker ever.
Some parts of Downtown DC has 4G, but the rest of the DC area will not get 4G till September.
hey peeps, I'm getting this bad ass phone,but don't know what is froyo?
what's froyo?
