Netflix for iPad hacked and running on iPhone (update: disabled)
How desperate are you to get Netflix running on your iPhone? Desperate enough to jailbreak, grab frameworks from your iPad, and do some plist hacking? If the answer to those questions is "yes," then the folks at ModMyi have something they'd like to show you. According to the site, a tipster has been able to get the video streaming service up and playing on an iPhone by making what appears to be fairly simple changes to his device; namely, boosting the iPad's MediaPlayer.framework and altering plist settings once the app was installed on his phone. It's not all wine and roses, as using Netflix where it's not supposed to be used causes a massive battery drain (go figure), and there are issues with crashing and 3G playback (two more unsurprising problems). Still, it can be done, and this is just the start -- so if you want to get in on the party (and maybe even help out a little bit), hit the read link and see what it's all about.
Update: Cody tells us the powers that be have already disabled this little gem of a workaround. We have to hand it to you, powers that be -- that was mighty quick for a Memorial Day weekend.
[Thanks, Cody]

Is it really "hacked" if the devices are running the same operating system?
@Leindurstit
lol... it's kind of like saying that some apps are being hacked to run on more than one Android device..
TEH HAXORZ!!!
@Kevin6432 Yeah that's how I get nexus ones widgets to run on my incredible :p
@Leindurstit
Or someone "hacked" a app to run on Win 7 ultimate that was running on home premium.
@admlshake It's more like hacking a Win 7 Ultimate feature to work on Win 7 Starter. The app is purposely restricted to a different market segment running different hardware.
+1 to everyone.
ENGADGET update the story, it stopped working.
@Leindurstit
The fact that Netflix made their app available for iPad under OS3.2 is likely due to a deal they cut with Apple in order to promote the iPad at launch. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple tweaked 3.2 to make apps like Netflix's run more efficiently.
I have no doubts that the Netflix app will be delivered to the iPhone when iPhone OS 4 hits the street. It's clear that there will be numerous advantages to the app running under OS4.
Actually, there are many apps running on iPhone are compatible with iPad, such as this iPad apps list "Top 10 Best Free iPad Apps", there are many running on iPhone. this is Netfix for iPhone.

@Leindurstit technically, it's a different version of the OS. :P
Or you could wait for WWDC when it's released..
@mateo124 then after wwdc it would be on the palm pre/pixi/+ in a matter of days. at least according to what palm said about their new pdk.
Will it be released for non-US too? A whole market out there untapped!
@Almo Not untapped by choice, there are just tons of legal/licensing restrictions.
@keeb
It's also coming for the pre?! Where did you see this at?
Does the difference in screen resolutions make a difference? Logic tells me yes, but it doesn't look it in the pictures.
Or a better question is, WHY doesn't the different screen resolution make a difference?
@BigJayDogg3
Try reading the article.....
Turns out the Netflix iPad app appears to have a native iPhone app bundled in with the iPad app, hence the ability to make it work on the iPhone and the different layout for the iPhone etc.
@jonp5065
I read the article and it didn't say (to me) that there is an iPhone app within the iPad app. Of course I'm not knowledgable on those things. There were a few references I didn't know. I'm just a simple user of the product and don't get involved with all the rest. So, I think, maybe you shouldn't be rude. I don't see where the article says that. I'm sure someone will enlighten me though. =]
im sorry but this is soo sad XD its the same freiking device the ipad doesnt even hit the 1Ghz output that they say it does the highest theyv been able to get it is 788Mhz just buy an ipod and wait for people to port (because it cant really be called hack if its running the same os) the ipad apps to the ipod youll save yourself over 300$ and have something more portable and more practical than a huge ipod.
let the flaming begin ipad fans.
I have an iPad. I like it and enjoying it. I'm sorry you have bitter jealousy.
@Almo
the hypepad sucks and you regret wasting the money on it...you can admit it, because we all know it
^_^
@Almo
Don't buy ipad. I'm waiting for iPhone OS 4.0.
With iPhone OS 4.0, iPhone owners will enjoy over 100 new features that make it easier to interact with apps, manage email, read books, and more. New features include the following:

Let us be real, the iPod touch and iPad are fantastic devices. But why are people so interested in watching videos on these devices? Call me old fashioned but I prefer to be comfortable when i watch something.
@Mike Vick
how comfortable do you have to be to kill dogs?
@Mike Vick You can be comfortable watching video on your iPod touch. I watch it lying down or sitting down. Same can be said with the iPad.
@Mike Vick
iWatch... seems to be everywhere now :)
@Mike Vick Proabably because they want to have the ability even though they will rarely use it. Kinda like Karate.
@Mike Vick
You're Old Fashioned
I used to think that Netflix was whoring its services out to too many devices but now I see the beauty of it.
I can access my Netflix account now across multiple devices. What if I'm bored and I don't have my laptop with me? I can watch a movie on my iPhone! Or if I'm home and I want to enjoy a movie on the big screen well then I have my Samsung TV or Bluray player that can do that as well. Or if I'm on the go and I want a medium sized screen I can pull out my iPad (assuming I buy one in the future which I'm leaning towards).
@MattsZ
very comfortable ;) i need front row seats haha
@Teslanaut
I know the iPad* is reasonable for watching things but lets be real. the ipad is supposed to be a fun/productivity thing on the go. if im at home, why would i be watching something that small? get yourself a large tv and use ipad when your at work. iPod touch should be for listening to music and apps on the go.
@TheLondonExchange
I used to think your mother was whored herself out to too many men...I was right.
Whore child.
@Mike Vick
There is no "should". People are entitled to purchase what they like and use them as they like. If a demographic wants to watch videos on an iPad say, in bed before sleep or do not own a TV or it's pre-occupied by others or live in a dorm or whatever reason at all, they're entitled to. No one needs to "get real" but yourself in understanding different people like different things. I'm actually enjoying watching tv shows in bed on mine. Nothing wrong with that.
I've been waiting on this for so long! Especially yesterday with rant on Twitter. The lord has been so good!
Whatever happened to Netflix making the app for the iPhone? They said in their blog that they would make one.
@ericpm Avatar FAIL
Ironic that I can't see the read link on my iPod? Or am I just blind...
@Avaron Calling the WHAMBULANCE!
Just goes to show how open the platform is.
See, this is why the best phone on the planet bar none is a Jailbroken iPhone! OH, THE SHENANIGANS and the glee with which it is done to the point of "Job-O the Hutt syndicate" and their walled garden be damed!
I just lost the game.
I'll stick with Android which "just works". iPhone OS is a piece of crap
@metric
agreed.
@XChrisX
lol @ your mom
Droid incredible comes with 5 proprietary "VZ" apps from Verizon, hardwired into the rom release out of the box. So much for freedom. I will stick with my non branded iPhone.
@Funkendoodles
I don't fully understand, I mean I am getting the Evo, which has some sprint apps like navigation and sprint tv and whatever else... why is that a problem? It just gives you options.. if you don't want to use those apps don't, it isn't bad that they are there.
@zsmorr I doesn't give me the same options. It is fragementation of an OS. Let's say I have a Verizon Droid and I really love the NFL Mobile app. I switch to a Sprint Droid cause I move across state and Sprint has better coverage. I loose the NFL app. I loose all my Verizon proprietary stuff on a supposed open source and customizable phone. So much for freedom.
@Funkendoodles I think you might not actually understand... anything.
@Octotron I can't take my Verizon Droid Incredible with me to Sprint can I? Gotta buy a new Sprint hardware. Sweet! Verizon has got to love this plus the $375.00 early termination fees!
@zsmorr That Sprint TV app only works on a Sprint Android phone. You can't take it with you when you switch carriers. I bet you can't even install it on another carrier's android. Some would say, "why would you want to?" That is what open source is all about. I guess Android isn't that open source. I guess there are limits to what Android can do?
@Funkendoodles
What is your deal? You're not even making an attempt at a valid argument. Carrier-specific apps have nothing to do with whether the OS is open. A carrier-specific app *can* run on Android just fine (no fragmentation or other issue prevents it from a technical standpoint), but the carrier makes a business decision to include an exclusive app just for their Android phones. What is the problem with that? It has nothing to do with Android.
Believe me that if AT&T had enough sway over Apple that they would be insisting on inclusion of AT&T apps in the iPhone too. They're just not in a position to tell Apple that Apple must preload apps for AT&T Navigator, Yahoo search, Yellowpages, etc...
@junktrunk Except that I have to download a carrier specific version of Android, which can vary greatly from model to model. Can I put Moto-blur on an HTC?
