ASUS Eee Pad official: Intel CULV processors, Windows 7, and a 10-hour battery life
Update: ASUS has given us a $399 to $499 price range for the Eee Pads, but don't start salivating just yet. We were also told that the Eee Pad won't be out until the first quarter of 2011.
Update 2: As promised, we've now got a preview of both devices, which you'll find right here.
Stay Connected and Multitask with the Eee Pad
Engineering excellence meets stunning design in the ASUS Eee Pad, an ultra-slim and light yet high-performance slate device designed to provide users with a real time cloud computing experience. The Eee Pad will be available in two configurations.
The 12" Eee Pad EP121 is a full-featured slate computer that serves as a multimedia player, e-reader, and compact computing device. Powered by a CULV Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor and the Windows® 7 Home Premium operating system, it effortlessly handles multitasking tasks whether enabling users to check their email and calendars, have video conferences, or process Microsoft Word and Excel documents simultaneously. The ASUS Eee Pad EP121 offers two convenient modes of character input-an embedded virtual keyboard or an innovative hybrid keyboard/docking station design. All of this power is available in a personal computing device that delivers up to 10 hours of usage.
For users seeking additional mobility, ASUS is proud to present the 10'' Eee Pad EP101TC that runs Windows Embedded Compact 7, which provides an engaging user experience and delivers instant connectivity to the Windows world. It also provides a familiar full-featured user experience across various connected devices and cloud computing services.

@Arkannis
you found this back in 2006? Man, Engadget is soooo slow...
@peacecrafts
OK, so maybe not the multi-touch, but I certainly owned a slate form-factor tablet PC in 2006. And multi-touch was certainly possible by 2007.
ASUS are the Ass Kickers in the portable computing world. Thank you ASUS for a real FULL FAT Operating System without restrictions. My Asus 1201n is feeling threatened right now. All other tablets, take note, you are OWNED!
now I only wish it was smaller and it could do phone calls..which leads me back to the Dell Streak. nevertheless, a great device it will be!
asus ftw
Guys, you do realize this is just a concept, right? Like the Courier. It's just a graphic rendering of a non existing device and some specs tossed around to whet your appetite. And more importantly; to stop you from buying an iPad untill ASUS is good and ready to come up with an actual tablet. In the business this is also known as vaporware.
@Garion
I'm a bit disappointed that the device is still far from shipment.
Bat we're taking about ASUS showing off a prototype at a tech fair, not about a leaked video from microsoft research.
There's quite a difference.
@0110110101100100
ooops, taLking, not taking :)
2011 Q1 and core 2 duo ULV ?? Even core i7 ULV is gonna be released within a couple month. Come o ASUS !
@sabby yea and they can definitely upgrade it by then. this is not a production model yet, its just a demo.
"More like Eee Tampon! Ha ha ha ha!"
Or have we grown out of that crap now?
Gha! I think I'll just have to buy an ExoPC in September, then think about selling it if this does come out first 1/4 next year.
Looks like it has some promise, but you can't spot Apple a 2+ million unit lead before you bring something to market. I'm surprise these models are so far out. They should be ready now.
Cute....but 2011. This is more of a concept than a reality. We all know how fast this tech game changes.
Looks pretty sharp. If they were coming out soon they would do great sales. 2011 release date means these will be old tech when they come out. Sad cause I was rooting for Asus here.
They should really try to release it this year, this blows the ipad out of the water
I feel stupid for not thinking of using a CULV rather then an Atom. Why has no one else done this? Props to ASUS. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
I don't get why people want an underpowered, keyboard less laptop. I have a net book, and using Photoshop or able ton on that thing is doable, but painful, I couldn't imagine doing that on a tablet if the app wasn't optimized for slate usage. That's the flaw of just throwing windows 7 on these slates, iPhone os And android both have viable apps to deal with content consumption and creation in tablet form (think brushes, sketchbooknpro, korg, etc).
Doesn't matter, the anti apple crowd are just as bad as apple fanboys and would rather buy shoddy technoology rather than just getting an iPad and jail breaking. Or maybe they would rather have access to mini clip rather than being able to play fully functional games like x plane and nova
@Hyakku underpowered? are you kidding me? Have you even used a Core 2 Duo ULV laptop? I have the ASUS UL30A-X5 with that processor, and my laptop is lightning fast.
This looks really sweet. However they really should tear down Windows 7 and completely re-design a version called Windows 7 Touch so that devices like this can switch between and take advantage. better than iPad by far regardless..
@Thor e yea man this rips the iPad a new one, it has all the ports and connections you need like HDMI and USB, along with a powerful core 2 duo processor and full fledged OS in Windows 7. I just wonder, why won't Apple implement MacOSX into the iPad along with iPhone OS? Don't they realize what that can do? They can have an incredible product. I hope somebody figures out a way to do that with some hack or something. If not, Tablets like these will continue to surpass the iPad in functionality.
It's pretty looking
The 12-inch Eee Pad looks gorgeous as does the docking station. That dock+pad design looks nicer than my MacBook Pro. 2011 is a long way away though. Especially when the Exopc slate is only 3 months away. 12-inches seems a bit too big for me as well, but I think Wintel has requirements on what screen size you have to have for a CULV or Atom processor.
Definitely wins the award for the sexiest looking slate computer thus far.
Bah, humbug! Firtst quarter of 2011? Do I have to call 'late'? or is it too late? >_>
GJMS
WOW.
I'd pay twice the iPad cost for one of these.
@RomeB but you don't have to:
http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/asus_eee_pad_coming_july
it says over there that the estimated pricing is 480-500 bucks, less than the cheapest iPad.
mmmmmm!
Looks nice, though it's not what I need
game changer
Ahh, Yeah! That's what I'M talkin bout!
Oh, 2011? Really? Then who the fuck cares.
@r00tcause
Just noticed the 1st Qtr 2011 *planned* release date.
WTF!?? That means End of 2011 (if we're lucky).
Enuff already with these Tease-Ware Tablets.
Damn you Engadget, I avoid the big b00b pr0n to avoid needin to changing pants, now you telling me of a dual core Win7 tablet that runs on 10 hou-mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!
*changes again*
another iPad killer? Yeah Right.
This is the tablet I have been waiting for!!!
Finally I can get rid of the pile of paper notes on my desk and have something that I am not struggling to see a virtual keyboard on.
I hope this comes with a kickstand and BT keyboard support. Then I'm sold.
My pre-order Evo4g could be getting some tethering use with this badboy. Perfect for classes especially if battery life is true. Also IPS please!!
IPAD KILLER
Well this and the exopc tablet I don't think we are going to run out of reasons to keep pointing and laughing at iPad owners...
i still think ipad is a big win for apple. 2m sold already, people.
It might come out by the time Windows 8 is ready, or Meego v.2.0
Oh well, hold our breath.
I was just at frys and wow I never knew so many pad makers were in the market! Humm should I buy the IPad or Eee Pad?
I have been waiting for a large format slate. I would buy this as a use-specific device. I carry a lot of typed-up music (I am an itinerant folk guitar player) and this looks a lot easier than flipping through binders of sheet music. At 12.1" this gives me a screen at 10.5" x 5.9" (approximately) in portrait mode to view my page of lyrics and chords.
I saw a mock-up that shows it coming with a stylus (much like a smartphone) coming out of a canal/slot/tube/tunnel? near one of the corners.
At $500-600, it seems priced right.
I understand it may optionally come with 3G and HDSPA??? (whatever for? it's not a phone too, is it?) and GPS (now THAT would be a great mapping device to travel with!) I am waiting for ASUS to release the actual specs before I salivate any more.
Finally I must admit that I am an anti-iAnything (because of the forced ties to Apple's store, saying what I can put on my iDevice.)
