These phones are a complete fail, just check out the average user reviews of them on Verizon.com. I can't help but think WHAT THE HELL was Microsoft thinking?
For this price, i prefer a Paml Pre plus
Kin 1 and Kin 2...
Is that anything like Thing 1 and Thing 2?

Why would anybody ever get one of these? Seriously, I am a Microsoft lover but these phones suck! They do not even have im clients. I am in my VERY VERY early 20's and i go to one of the most diverse colleges in NYC and people love facebook here (plenty of hipsters) and NO ONE would even be caught with this turd! They should have created a windows mobile 'lite' operating system with social apps etc.. This just sucks I would not even touch one. The hardware looks horrible.. Sidekick is way better. And to add injury to insult this sh8t is so expensive haha.. Why wouldnt someone get a palm or droid or something else? This is why microsoft is getting schooled. :/ its a sad day please bring back Gates!
@Mike Vick: it's funny, because for the longest time, people were bitching about not being able to buy a Zune phone. The KIN's ability to instantly search and stream any song, artist, album instantly is a crazy awesome feature. One they don't do near enough to promote and no one else offers anything like it.
I didn't think I'd be all that excited about the KIN 1, but my wife has one and it's surprisingly very nice, well built, and has excellent battery life (3 days, hard use). Being able to stream music via bluetooth in the car is very cool. Everytime she uses it, the small form factor always get a lot of questions from people around us.
We currently have one as a media testing unit, so it has a few months of pre-paid use. As much as I like the device however, the cost of that data plan (plus a Zune Pass) is pretty steep. It should be a $25 data+unlimited music ZunePass plan. If they did that, they wouldn't be able to make enough of them.
the ads are driving me crazy. they are almost intentionally bad at this point. has anyone else seen the stalker boyfriend at the atm kin ad yet.
Wow, that didn't take long - discounted already!
Why haven't MS posted any first month sales figures we wonder...
Free Kins at Walmart in the bargain bins by Christmas - what? Free already!
Jeeze, Ballmer should be stoned at the stake...
@SExpress I work at Walmart; the Kin's are below our standards
i think i kin, i think i kin..
Sean, you are trying too hard to hate on these phones. There was a time I didn't care about smart phones.
Not sure why you'd want to get one of these, but if you're interested, here's my unboxing: http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2010/05/31/unboxing-the-kin-one-and-kin-two/
Walking around with that thing in your hand would be a good way to get laughed at. Seriously Microsoft. It's cool to be different, but not EMBARRASSINGLY different. Morons.
They're getting desperate to move their backlog of inventory.
I find those phones great... To replace my soap: the shape, the design... Just like the soap.
What do You think? Should I pay 30$ for a soap?
DON'T THINK SO, Billy G.
i was at Verizon checking out Kin 2 and i couldn't get out of the social menu, i couldn't find the browser
@anotherworld: The single button brings you to the 'home/social' screen. Flick right for your favorite contacts. Flick left for a list of all of the phone's functions / built-in apps, including the browser. It's pretty simple.
the ONE and ONLY reason i would consider buying these phones is for the Zune integration... i would LOVE to use my Zune Pass everywhere i go!... but unfortunately love ain't cheap, and i am ^_^
So what takes up more bandwidth? An occasional download of some stupida$$ fart app or continuous syncing of photos and videos with the cloud? It doesn't matter if your beloved smartphone allows you to download an app that gives you on-demand orgasms. If these Kin phones use up more bandwidth than your phone, the $30 data plan is warranted. Data packets are data packets. It doesn't matter if you think the data packets that you transmit from your phone are more precious than those transmitted by these Kin phones.
this is a teenagers phone and is not worthy of a $30 data plan. they'd have a hard time even with [literally] giving these phone away...
a Verizon fanboi defense!!
I don't care who the carrier or phone manufacturer is, with all the smartphones out with their unlimited capabilities for the same monthly price, who would indebt themselves to these ugly limited devices.
Verizon has how many Droids and even the Palm Pre. Microsoft should give out awards to the people that by these. Or at least Verizon should give away free messaging as part of the deal. I'm really interested in seeing these sales #'s.
It's shocking to see that Microsoft has horrible taste for designers.
What were they thinking when they design this phone and which idiot approved it? They should higher me to do the design. LOL I'll make a way better one!!!
This one is just FUGLY!!!
I would not buy one of these but it is because I am not in the target market. I know it is cool on Engadget to hate MS but when I went to the Kin site on Facebook there are almost 200,000 fans and most either say they want a Kin or love their Kin. I don't think MS hit it out of the park or anything but they seem to at least be on to something. I think the price is the problem. The apps don't seem to be that big of a deal to teens and tweens.
