Labor practice protest goes down at Computex, Steve Jobs called an 'OEM profit bloodsucker'
It's hard to say if today's protest outside of the Computex show floor has anything in particular to do with Taiwan's president showing up to tour the expo, but there's zero doubt that it has a lot to do with the recent attention given to questionable labor practices in Foxconn's Chinese facilities. A good two dozen protesters were out in force today, with loads of police and TV cameras giving the world a look at how these folks feel about Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Wintek's CEO in particular. As for Jobs, he was being labeled an "OEM profit bloodsucker" and "the man behind irresponsible contractors," while a slew of others were deemed "production line killers, number one union butchers, representatives of mass layoffs and kings of chemical killing." We also spotted instances of "tired to death" and "suicide overtime work," neither of which are particularly rosy. Hit the gallery below for more of the mayhem.

At least Steve keeps us free from the evils of porn
you see protesting, I see a few good looking gals.
I support there protest to some degree, but, truth be told, the group does not look very large...... tricky camera angles seem like they're trying to make this look larger than it may be...
Major differences between these protesters and true grass-roots protesters (such as the tea baggers). Everything is spelled correctly and the graphics are unified.
I I feel bad for then, I do. But its not Apple's fault;their blame is misplaced and their message is muddled by inflammatory communist union BS, the same kind of crappy we hear over and over from big unions here in the U.S- "ooooh steal their profits, down with the company, rah rah rah." They fail to realize that the free market and profit motive is the reason they all have jobs in the first place. Foxconn is supposedly the highest paying and best plant in that area, so it seems pretty ridiculous they would be targeting the best plant there. I mean, why not protest and lash out at the other plants that are more abusive? Because they can get away with knocking Foxconn. Now realize that "better" is all relative and relative to the U.D the conditions and pay are bad, but it still seems like they are taking advantage. Again, they are abused, so they are actual victims (unlike the GD communist union thugs we have here in the U.S who just want to steal from companies), but they should make their message less inflammatory and less like it came from the communist manifesto and more clear with clear demands for reform. Just my two cents.
@yoko1324 YES IT IS APPLE'S FAULT. APPLE CLAIMS TO DO EXTENSIVE CHECKS ON THEIR MANUFACTURING CONTRACTS. APPLE SUCKS!
Fanboys being over defensive, they are not just charging at Apple, you can see Foxconn's CEO on the left and Wintek's on the right. Both of them are Taiwanese.
@techtroll Those are simplified Chinese characters, so that make them unlikely to be Taiwanese
@darkmax Those are traditional chinese characters actually. You know nothing about chinese character, do you?
Engadget,
Is there a way to get an RSS feed that doesn't include posts about Foxconn's labor practices or frankly any labor practices for that matter?
I wanna hear about hot gadgets not this.
Sincerely
Free Market Lovers
Looks like these evil corporations should move their operations to the next country that wants to develop its economy and let these poor people go back to their agrarian stone age utopia.
It's a bunch of people protesting. Most of them have no idea what's going on, but want to be part of a protest, and I'm certain that some of them have political motivations for their participation.
It's like protests in most countries really. Mix one part good intentions and one part need for community with one part self-righteousness and two parts ignorance. Serve with milk tea or picket signs. Great for parties or computer expos.
We are all, one way or the other, responsible for these suicides for allowing us to be hyped into buying all these gadgets. We have to call these multinationals to their responsibilities while buying their products.
Considering how much Apple products cost, it's terrible how their workers are treated and paid... where does all the money go after the cost of underpowered hardware?
@henshinagogo
Shh.... don't say it out loud or you may get bulldozed over by a bunch of Apple fanbois.
You guys are fun to listen to...some of you know what you are talking about...some of you...not so much. Trolls are easy to spot...not too hidden. And we even have the anti-capitalists and communist haters. This is the best discussion I've seen! Someone notify me when the hippies and earth children start spewing...I don't want to miss that!
If we didn't pay China to manufacture our tech, we would pay the next lowest bidder.
He sucks...everyone knows it.
What is up with the woman on the right. "I want to protest, but don't want to be seen doing it."
I do not think Apple or Steve Jobs is directly to blame. The western economy is brutal and competitive. Without low prices people just won't buy anything. Here in Vancouver the minimum wage is $8/Hour...What I hear is people make $150 a month in China. Do the math, and thats 8 times less. Thus hypothetically everything made in North America would cost at least 8 times more. I know I wouldn't want to pay $4000 for an iPad.
This is an extremely complicated issue, with too many factors at play. If you want to sum it up in a couple words, then all you can say is "Everyone is to blame".
@summerboy18 Look who's talking.
Scream wasn't that scary a movie...
yes... this is correct... Steve is Evil..... Apple is evil.... They basically are supportive of terrible conditions in the workforce to peddle their gimmick crap on society for cheap...
Guys what does it matter if its steve jobs or Mark hurd the truth is the foxconn workers are suffering and rather than pinpointing and debating over who's responsible we should do something about it like those Taiwanese people . I salute them for their brave action .
@dj99 Yeah. Move the production factories to Taiwan where people get paid real wages and have real labour laws. It's a win-win scenario.
