Mario Kart RC game brings the Mushroom Cup to your living room

Sure this ain't the first time we've seen Mario Kart step outside the game console, but we'll be damned if Tomy's Japanese line of RC cars don't inspire a serious case of gadget lust. In addition to the usual remote controlled shenanigans, these guys have the ability to "shoot" virtual shells and bananas at other cars; power-ups are indicated on the controller via LEDs; and cars contain infrared sensors so you know when you've been hit with a weapon (which causes you to rumble and slow down) Cars are available from Amazon Japan to the tune of ¥2,730 (around $30) each.

They've been around, on occasion, since Mario Kart DS was released... possibly even earlier. I have a much bigger version with Donkey Kong, with a Wavebird-style remote control.

I'm only buying it if Yoshi has crazy acceleration with no top end speed and Bowser has the reverse.

they are not the same. they dont have the entire "item" functionality. they are just mario shaped rc cars.
For everybody who wants to buy them: they are on ebay. shipping from hongkong internationally just 10 USD. just looked it up, seemed like there are only 2 left.
Does this mean when your car gets hit - the car automatically detects it and the hydraulics will cause the car to act as if it has genuinely been hit by tumbling forward and maybe even do a front flip??

Too bad they are not 'RC'. In my experience IR and LED controled devices are terrible and poorly done all around.
If my kid sees this he will crap his diaper (again).

I've had thee kinda things for years. Based on Mario Kart 64. They came with loads of little Bananas, Shrooms and sheels and stuff, too :D

someone gave me a mario kart RC a few years ago but had a short range (like 2meters) and didn't have the kind of features these ones have. This is pretty awesome and I wish I were 10 again to truly enjoy it :(

HA! Surely your average Ninty gamer would be utterly confused when using this RC toy, being so used to the crappy physics dynamics on the console titles, they'd hate it!
Kinda like how a friend of mine tried to tell me that the Ridge Racer titles have extremely realistic physics car modelling! ;-)
But does it feature the rainbow road? :)
