NVIDIA brings a dual GTX 470 prototype to Computex, causes power shortages in Taipei
We'll hit the pause button on all the power-sipping tablet talk for a moment to show you NVIDIA's maddest and baddest beast yet. This is a dual GeForce GTX 470 card, meaning that two Fermi dies reside on the same board, along with the necessary circuitry and an apparently beefed up apportionment of GDDR5 RAM as well. Measuring in at 12 inches long, this prototype is being shown off at Computex by add-in board partner Galaxy -- probably just to prove that the mammoth undertaking is even possible. You'll be forgiven for mistaking it for one of 3dfx's final ill-fated productions, and with a requirement for two 8-pin power connectors and a doubling of the standard 470's 215W TDP, this dualie card sure looks set for a similar future of pretty pictures and no retail viability. All the same, if you happen to have a nuclear reactor and a wind farm in your backyard, this could be just the GPU for you.

Come on, 215 watts isn't all that much. Let's say you run this thing full throttle 24/7 and pay 20 cents per kilowatt hour .. that's still under $1 a day (excluding cost of running computer).
@JS Double 215 watts is 430 watts, in 3 way SLI.. that would make a nice heater.
@10nisman94 more like 430W*24h=10320Wh a day --> ~ 2 bucks a day
-->753 bucks a year at 24/7/365
@10nisman94
Somebody call 911, shawty fire burning on the dance floor
@Broderbund
Is this shawty?

@SolidSnake well phonetically it's shawty (or shotty) but I think technically it's shorty.
@10nisman94
Thats half the power my power bar on my laptop gives me! :O
@SolidSnake
Oh my bad I read that wrong, I thought you were saying "Is it shawty?", questioning if the word was actually shawty.
Anyway, yeah..
@JS Well, if they're shipped like they are in the picture, they will last for a whole thirty seconds.
Dear Nvidia - I would like 2 DVI ports, 1 Standard DisplayPort and 1 Standard HDMI port on the backplate thank you very much. We don't want Mini HDMI. Please stick to standard connectors most of us would have cables for. If ATI can do this on their top end cards, there is no excuse why you can't.
@JS Whoa, I'm having 3dfx Voodoo5 flashbacks...does nVidia plan on making an external power supply available for their Fermi cards too?
@raidor
LOL, If it lasted that long without your motherboard melting down.
awwww I miss 3dfx for some reason
@dardub
got my diamond 3d SLI setup back up a year ago... and still haven't sold my voodoo 5500... Miss them too...
Its gonna louder than my parents fighting XD
@rescawen I think you a word.
@bdfortin He accidentally the whole thing.
other than "because we can" i have to ask for a reason why this exists.
@kojo87
Because the ati 5950 is 2x 5770's in one. This only assures nvidias next high card will rank supreme.
@kojo87
If you have to ask, then this isn't for you.
@kojo87: This will come out.
Just like the 5970 exists and the GTX 295 exists, etc.
But considering how power in-efficient and heat-happy these are, i don't think this will come out till a die shrink.
@kojo87
Because then Quad SLI with 2 cards would be possible.
And we know where that leads...
8-way SLI with 4 cards!
Makes complete sense...
@kojo87 I honestly think it's all about showboating. I wouldn't doubt it if the first prototype dual core processors were the same way, but i may be wrong...
@4ndr3W
Plain wrong. The 5970 is two lower-clocked 5870s.
@kojo87 i fully understand the theory behind it but in practice it makes no sense at all. wahoo 8 GPUs over 4 boards but you need a 2TW PSU to make it work.
@kojo87 There are more uses for these than just gaming. With CUDA, they could be very useful for things like mass video transcoding.
Frankly, I thought that the 9800 GX2 was the best GPU I've ever purchased and it only cost £125, second hand, from ebay.
Maybe one day I'll get the above card.

Oh, I found the heatsink
@archkron
I dunno, maybe you need 2... seeing as there's 2 GPUs
@archkron Unless you try to overclock it, cause then this will happen...

Thought it was a motherboard at first look.
You know what else is 12 inches long?
My -
@SolidSnake
Nose?
@dennisheadley
No, my -
@SolidSnake
foot
@SolidSnake Ego
Oh wait that's 12 kilometer long
@SolidSnake Subwoofer?
@SolidSnake
actually you "-" is about a tenth of an inch long by my measurement
@SolidSnake Vagina?
@SolidSnake Ethernet cable?
Sorry, though nobody likes a short Ethernet cable.
@SolidSnake:
Solid Snake
@HikaKao
You win.
My subwoofer is 12 inches long.
The rest of you, shoo.
I hear the omelet du fromage edition comes with a frying pan shaped heatsink and free eggs.
That thing is obscene.
/me drools.
Fermi is overrated and this thing will be 100C on load. No thanks.
@vpr0
Maybe overpraised and overpriced, but definitely not overrated. And what if this chip is ok at 100? I bet 5 years ago someone said "psh that thing would need a 600 watt power supply".
Now everyones got a 750.
@vpr0
Let me introduce you to WATER COOLING
@DefPoet
I do have watercooling(a mistake IMO) but don't want to spend extra $120+ whenever new cards come out then your stuck with a waterblock.
@Failbait
I'm sure the card can handle that temperature but it will also warmed up everything else. Now you'll say have better airflow. I do, but still, to hot for my liking.
@Failbait
I have a 420w psu. All of us out here aren't on the high power band wagon. Personally I'm loving the low power components out there these days.
