Steve Jobs: iPhone OS 'started on a tablet'
Well, Steve Jobs just dropped a little nugget of history on us during his chat with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the All Things D conference. When asked by Walt why they originally put their new OS on a phone and not a tablet, Steve said, "I'll tell you a secret. It began with the tablet." After working on the tablet OS which had a glass display and multitouch, another idea occurred to Jobs. "My God, I said, this would make a great phone ... so we shelved the tablet and built the iPhone." And there you have it.

@marik1234 the first? loser? yes that you :p
Engadget, please combine all of these "nuggets" into one article like you do with every other company/event liveblog. Apple is not that special...
@dcoaster. I second this. Engadget everyone that has intreset in apple would be following the live blog. And I think it would be better to male on post about all the things said and keep that post on top. That people will see it and there wont be. A page dolled with apple posts
@DefPoet
Apple articles attract readers, more Apple articles --> more page views --> more ads --> more money for engadget
i enjoy the structure of how they deliver apple news to us, i like apple a lot
@dcoaster
APPLE HATERS
Suck it and enjoy it!
@dcoaster
Do you guys EVER stop whining? I mean, you would think that you ran the site. For Christ's sake, shut up!
@TheRogueFFAngel
God you're annoying. Like one of those sports fans that paints themselves and goes absolutely crazy when their team gets even an inch ahead of the competition.
Hopefully, unlike the crazy sports fans, you'll wake up and realize that billion dollar corporations are designed to milk money out of YOU. Either that or you'll go crazy in the middle of a busy intersection, like the sports fans.
@dcoaster
Who's whining, they just asked for all the posts about the little tidbits of info from D8 be combined into one post. Anybody who is really interested is already following the live blog and there isnt really a need for them.
@Peter Church Whining? Get your head out of your iPad's charging port and then you'll think clearly.
@Peter Church
What you just said sounds an awful lot like whining...

@DefPoet
I agree that all the posts are annoying, but it is nice how all the comments don't get lost and are more relevant to the current topic. They need some sort of hybrid for these long blog posts.
@dcoaster
Hey, I'm no Apple Guy. In fact I dislike most of their products, but let's be fair. Engadget did the same thing with the Google I/O. A main liveblog and articles for the relevant tidbits.
@DefPoet The thing is, each one of these nuggets would, if revealed any other day, be worthy of a dedicated post. That's how many little bombs this interview dropped. I think it was one of the most revealing Apple/Jobs interviews in recent history. Bravo, D8.
@dcoaster

@dcoaster
can i just point out that even The Unofficial Apple Weblog put it in a single article?
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/06/01/steve-jobs-live-on-stage-tonight-at-d8-conference/
@ProfKOS From what I remember of the conference coverage, it consisted of a single article for each person getting up and presenting, but not several mini-articles for one presenter in a row.
@skyblaze
(oh, and by the way... someone over there's talking trash about us Engadget commenters... we should put him in his place)
@dcoaster
They do it because they know it 5x's their hit count on their stories.
@skyblaze
Maybe that's why no one reads TUAW?
@marik1234
Rea 'tard.
bullshit
@justmoe1
No shit!
Jobs is an idiot! He just proves that the ipad is just a large ipod touch.
@a falling stone So what if it's a big iPod touch. Why be such a stupid douche? Evidently there's a market for a "giant iPod touch" so Jobs still wins, agree?
@a falling stone Actually, he's more saying that the iPhone & iPod Touch are smaller iterations of the iPad. It's an important distinction.
@01
You honestly think that the ipod touch came from the ipad.
This is were marketing comes in to play and dumb people follow.
This is were i agree with justmoe1 BULLSHIT!
iPad has been in dev for 5 years. In the current read-and-react tech world that's an eternity.
So I guess the iPhone is a mini iPad, not the other way around?
Jk
@marik1234
Over/under on how many different Engadget articles will be used to cover a freaking interview with Jobs. I mean we already got the three pre-interview posts. We have the live blog. And I think this is post #4 - breaking out his comments seperately. Seriously this is such overkill.
what a waste of space on the front page
I wonder if Apple has ever made up history, stuff that couldn't be confirmed on way or another. Would you question Jobs if he said
So the iPad is really just a big iPhone. This is about the closest thing we'll ever get to having this confirmed officially.
@DustbinK
have you not seen the thing's internals?
The silicon never lies :)
@DustbinK Ehm, no, he pretty much officially says that the iPhone is just a small iPad.
Goggle or Microsoft have a conference and they get one story on engadget, Steve Jobs opens his mouth and Engadget almost collapses pumping out stories regarding minor comments he makes.
@balazamon0
I guess you stupid self wasn't here for the Google conference.
@Doc Kwame Nkrumah
The difference was that Google was making announcements on actual products and services. This is just the comments of a CEO with details that really don't matter. Also, Google IO was a full on keynote, while this is an INTERVIEW.
@RobMikh
It sure matters to the readers of engadget who are posting all these comments in here.
@Doc Kwame Nkrumah
Have you read the rest of the comments? Especially the ones about the farting? People care that their RSS feeds are flooded with a sound-byte from an interview that was expanded to a full article entry.
@Doc Kwame Nkrumah
What, did you get banned AGAIN??? What is this, your 4th account? Just stop posting Kwame.
All those millions of dollars how about changing your shirt and pants for once Steve?
The Taiwanese said it best Steve Jobs 'OEM profit bloodsucker'
@Xing How many articles are you going to post this same comment on? I said it best, "You're an annoying troll without anything of interest to say."
New nugget of history? I thought this was common knowledge back in Jan 2007. It was well publicised that the Mac tablet evolved into the iPhone. Several blogs, including Engadget I'm sure, ran that story. If anything, this just verifies those past rumours.
@jinushaun
The engadget employees have to earn their kickbacks..I suspect we will have more articles until the interview finishes, and then a "retrospect" article summarizing all the other ones.
for fucks sake stop all these articles. why not keep them all in the liveblog? no need to repost everything he says.
Next article: Steve jobs farted...there will be at least two paragraphs about the fart, what it smelled like and how it sounded, and the audience's reaction.
