Steve Jobs: iPhone OS 'started on a tablet'

Well, Steve Jobs just dropped a little nugget of history on us during his chat with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at the All Things D conference. When asked by Walt why they originally put their new OS on a phone and not a tablet, Steve said, "I'll tell you a secret. It began with the tablet." After working on the tablet OS which had a glass display and multitouch, another idea occurred to Jobs. "My God, I said, this would make a great phone ... so we shelved the tablet and built the iPhone." And there you have it.

That sucks. I would have rather had the iPad all these years. I am incredibly disappointed that its debut coincided with my last semester of college. It's bull-crap!!!

I would bet that students who have textbooks stored on their iPad will pull higher GPAs. Personally, I WANT to read my textbooks now because reading is all-of-a-sudden fun. Enthusiasm = higher grades.

Most have tried to copy the iPhone and so far most have failed. With the exception of a few devices here and there, none of them feel as snappy and responsive. The same goes for tablets. If you're going to make a tablet then please copy from them. The tablets that we've seen have good hardware but terrible software. That being said, iPad still lacks a few things but what they do have works and works well.
