iPad Camera Connection Kit a commodity item, now fetches $100+ on eBay
Now that the USB-wielding cat's out of the bag, it's looking like supplies of the iPad Camera Connection Kit aren't keeping up with demand -- one Engadget reader tipped us off to the fact that the $30 attachments are worth up to $180 on eBay. A quick bit of sleuthing showed that Apple's actually still selling the things -- they're simply backordered, with a three to four week shipping delay -- but sure enough, niche e-tailers currently list the dongles for as much as $150, and eBay auctioneers are finding the kits sell for two to five times the original MSRP. If your external HDD experiments didn't work out the way you'd liked, at least you can be sure you'll get your money back.

lolwut
It's like these guys are trolling themselves.
@impulse462 LMAO! This is great! You can get a USB Splitter for a PC for half the price! Roughly the same tech right?
@impulse462 Is it really that surprising that people would overpay for accessories for an overpriced device?
@Ducman69
Probably not, but that's just stupid
@Ducman69
I don't understand what the problem is -- why is a plastic piece with wires in it hard to manufacture and backordered for 3-4 weeks? You would think the iPad itself would be more rare -- but no, a small plastic USB dongle is...?? Doesn't make sense..
I wonder if you can make your own with an existing iPad USB cable?
@DoctarPeppar
I believe that in the grand scheme of things, Apple would rather use the factory to make more iPads, and not a $30 accessory.
@BMills
Yep.. Retooling to make multiple devices is such a pain.. If they only had more than one assembly line things would be so much easier..
@DoctarPeppar The shortage in USB dongles just shows how lacking the iPad is and that the 2 million plus owners want more connectivity for their iPad. They should've just waited for a tablet with more connectivity options (USB, SD slot, HDMI, etc, etc.)
@bladerunner0427 If the ipad had ports then this problem would never happen
pff 200 dollars for an sd port and a USB..
Sickening
@Ducman69 Are you speaking about my wife?
Not to be a troll, but in the PC world, when you pay 200$ for a USB connector, it usually comes with accessories, such as a digital camera... or a netbook.
lol, who is paying that price?
They should be punched in the face for stupidity
@Sled Quick eBay search shows you can get these for $80 Buy It Now.
@Oghowie And a quick apple search and I can get one of these for $30
@Sled
iPad camera connection kit fanboys, that's who.
@Sled Same thing for all the iPads floating around. Don't shop around online. Only buy from Apple Online Store, or Bestbuy.com Those are the only two retailers who are not price gouging the iPad.
@Firehazel Yeah, Apple already did...
omg how brain washed can people get? For that price might as well get a freaking netbook!
@Snarf101
Plus the seller spelled authentic wrong....autentic? Fail.
@Snarf101
That's how you know its a Chinese reproduction, with autHentic Apple boxing.
@Snarf101
Typo in an ebay listing? it's shocking and surprising, isn't it?
As always, a rip-off.
@Juggernaut408 That is one great avatar! My Nexus is way better than my old 3GS
@rstoplabe14
stop contradicting yourself .. of course your nexus is better than your "OLD" 3GS... the nexus is a generation ahead ... stop comparing the two phones ...
@juggernaut .. nice avatar :)
@AnAnt
Why am I contradicting? I bought a 3GS when it came out, it replaced my really old AT&T Tilt, and it was great, but after a while, I noticed that the phone was not really the big deal that it was hyped up to be, and I ended up selling it, and getting a Nexus. Therefore unlike most trolls in this place, I gave the device with the all mighty fruit a try before i made the judgement. Also, while I looked at the forums on the device, I noticed that the people who purchase these devices feel like they are purchasing a lifestyle, not the device that they are paying too much for. And one last thing, the reason for my madness is not the device it self, its the way that apple does business, with people having to go way out of their way to jailbreak the dam thing. I mean google even posts on the android forums how to root and unlock the device. The feeling that the way and the features and ultimately the potencial of a device that you ultimately own is on the hands of one company, and the ecosystem supporting this device must go by the arbitrary rules that this one company makes. And yes i do know that im going to get downranked.
@rstoplabe14
Thank you for your testimonial.
What, why would anyone pay........
Nevermind, these are the same people who marvel at an oversized iTouch.
@rstoplabe14
And a swinming pool is a bigger bathtub.
What's your point?
@SolidSnake if you take baths in your swimming pool then im NEVER going swimming at your house
@angelwolf
No, I take baths in my cardboard box....

@SolidSnake My point is that they make a big deal every year when they add something that should have been there before and call it a revolution, all hail the god who sits on the top of the mountain at infinity loop, we got copy and paste on a mobile communications device!
@rstoplabe14
Come on man this is engadget. The site that did 6 news articles for one steve jobs interview yesterday.
They are just trying to get you rilled up!
uh.... you guys have fun with that
i'll enjoy the usb built into my netbook... as it SHOULD'VE been on the iPad
@skyblaze
The ipad is not a compuer.
Your netbook is.
@skyblaze
You enjoy that on your netbook.
I'll enjoy the USB built into my quad core, 8GB, 40" 1080p.
@skyblaze not only is the ipad not a general purpose computer, a USB port is actually THICKER than the iPad bezel. But then again you'd know that if you had actually seen an iPad in the flesh.
@grouver Yeah, but I still think they should have at least 1 usb port on the iPad. It's not like couldn't have designed around it. It would just make things so much easier.
@skyblaze
Apple decided it didn't need USB.
I wonder who got this one right; you, some random commenter, with notable credentials or successes. Or Steve Jobs?
Call me controversial, but I'm going with Jobs on this one
@grouver
They should really invent a smaller usb port standard then. But what to call it? Micro-usb, mini-usb?
@Dustin True, it's not a computer or full replacement but that's no reaso why it shouldn't have a USB-port. Modern phones come with USB-ports (some with USB host, looking at the nokia N8), TV's come with USB-ports these days,...
@grouver The thickest part of the iPad is thicker than a full size USB-port. The fact that the iPad becomes thinner at the edges has only to do with esthetic's. And even now they could provide mini or micro USB.
@pukerocket Yes, according to apple you don't need USB. That's why they have an overpriced USB adapter isn't it?
@pukerocket
Well.. Given the they are selling out of USB dongles, Looks like people do want USB on the Jesus pad.
So
1) His turtleneckness was wrong, and people really want at least one USB socket.
2) Apple knew all along that people want a USB socket, but also knew that anybody gullible enough to buy the product is gullible enough to buy an over priced dongle to allow a feature that should have been built in from day one.
Not sure either shows Apple in a positive light.
@MaTdg
To many people on Engadget, everything is overpriced.
The most popular response when Engadget asks how to make something better is always "make it cheaper".
2 million ipads sold, how many bought these dongles? Let's be honest, you have absolutely no idea!
@pukerocket No, I have no idea how many dongles are sold and I don't care if apple sold 1 or a gazillion iPads.
When I'm going to spend money on a product it's all about what MY expectations are and what I want to do with a device, not why 2 million other people bought it or why the 7 billion people on earth - 2 million didn't bought it.
Can you imagine the kind of laughter in the industry if Dell made something like this?
@JeremyBenthem
not if the device it works with sold 2 million units in 2 months.
@SolidSnake Dell would never sell 2m of those, Dell buyers don't buy thing just becouse of a fruit simbol.
@SolidSnake the Pet Rock also sold at that rate.
@unicorned
Touché.
@SolidSnake
I'm not exactly talking about the iPad, I mean an adapter that's a joke to not be included, let alone sold for $30
