Lexus breaks a champagne glass with a $375,000 hammer, so to speak
The older among you might vividly remember Lexus' old ad campaign from the company's early years whereby they'd run a car on a dyno with an unbreaking, unfaltering pyramid of champagne glasses perfectly balanced on the hood. To celebrate the launch of the $375,000 LFA supercar, Lexus put a new twist on the theme by setting out to break the glass -- with sound alone. Apparently, Lexus matched the champagne glass' resonant frequency to that of the LFA's exhaust note, bursting the flute to shards just as the car comes up on 200mph -- all with no CGI involved. The way we see it, if you can afford the car, you can certainly afford to replace your drinkware, right? Follow the break for the full video.

I think that's the car in NFS Shift.
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi
Seriously man, that game is just never going to be released... hugely disappointing
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi
It definitely should be, it'll also be an awesome mini game within Duke Nukkem Forever where you drive him around in this thing between stages
@troy - that was hilarious!
Also, I noticed the display info: 4.1 MPG! Impressive.
@ronno so much for eco-friendly xD
@ronno
"Also, I noticed the display info: 4.1 MPG! Impressive."
For a F-1 engine that IS impressive.
@F C
F-1-like.
.. and I JIIZZED IN MY PAANTS!
no but seriously, awesome commercial. Yeah I'd choose a Ferrari F430 and put a down payment on a house with the extra cash left over, but this is one classy commercial.
@Sa12utobi Why? I don't see what's so great about this commercial...its possible to do this with an unamplified human voice...for free. Sure looks pretty tho
@Sa12utobi definitely one of the best commercials in a while. This could almost be Superbowl commercial material
@satbir IMO i like this commercial because its done in a way that really separates the car form the rest. I get a difference sense of class which I'd expect from a Lexus. Of course I wouldn't buy the car for what its priced at (hell I'd pick a e92 M3 and keep all the extra cash) but the commercial makes the car look futuristic, aggressive, and elegant all at the same time. thats my opinion at least. If I could dyno my car in a place like that, I'd have to say i'd be one classy guy.
Computer graphics interactive?
@Shalabi
Was the article THAT difficult to understand?
Ha that's funny, I just saw this commercial on ESPN for the first time tonight and looked the car up on their website...375,000. wtf?!
I can't get over how ugly the rear end is, and how outrageously expensive it is.
Nice car no doubt but overpriced and Lexus is run by a bunch of pretentious pricks. You had to get on a list just to overpay for this car and you can't even own it; unless, of course, you like paying an additional $70,000 on top of that $375,000 at the end of its lease term for the title.
No thanks Lexus, there are much better options.
How does breaking a glass means perfection?
@enaybee
"How does breaking a glass means perfection?"
R U SRS?
Am I the only one who noticed the freaking instrument panel had a setting for a "lap timer" a phracking LAP TIMER. Oh man....i'm just...i'm..no more words...
@avinash240
The timer got to me too. I wonder if it works w/ GPS?
More on the panel...
I hate when silly graphics are used in overlays on phones in movie scenes or when sequences are messed up. In this case, the 'pursuit of perfection' should be reflected in an ad for a $400k hot rod. The odometer at :07, :15 and :19 reads 5887, 5891 and 5889 respectively. IMO, this is sloppy work (by the ad agency I guess).
So... they record the sound from the car on the dyno and pipe it thru a tweeter into a glass? What? Why do they need to put it into top gear for this anyway?
If only I had $200,000 for the up-front lease fee, I'd.... buy an F430.
@UnixSystemsEngineer
you mean you don't have that kind of money? ahh that's boring
That boot is ugly as shit.
did anyone notice the 4 miles per gallon...
@tylerw654 4.1 mpg.
My old V8 from 1976 had 8 mpg city, 22 hwy.
@tylerw654 $375,000 price tag means the people buying it dont care, its like the Veyron, a set of 4 tires for it costs $20,000 and can only go about 10 minutes at top speed before being completely worn out... do the owners care? nope its just money
@tylerw654 Beamer, Benz, and Lexus??
@tylerw654
Haha, ya. I was just about to say that. With MPG like that I'll just get the Lambo SUV
@tylerw654 Is it actually accurate? My father has a 2010 Prius and it reports that he averages 5 MPG whenever the gas engine is in use, otherwise it generally stays at 100.
Only Lexus I've ever liked, however I think I could shatter that glass with my car. And if the exhaust note couldn't do it, the wheels could :p
If you look closely, the glass did not shatter because of the sound, but from distorting enough to hit the speaker placed next to it.
Looks like an R8 ripoff.
@appsman it doesnt look anything like an R8, the R8 looks like a Veyron but considering they are cousins its acceptable
The commercial is meh, but that car is INCREDIBLE. It doesn't matter if this car is $100,000 or $1,000,000, it's only a dream for me.
I'd still get the R8. A third the price for almost the same beauty and performance.
So lame. Who does Lexus think they are. I love love love cars, so I know my fair share about them. But what really irritates me is the fact that Lexus created the fat IS F, and it couldn't compete with the M3, or C63 AMG. Then they decide that they lost that battle and try to go a different route. Almost 400k for this wanna be Audi? I don't think so. And they're so pretentious they're making it lease only. Try again, for that money I'll take the new 458 italia that has sex written all over it.
Dude, the R8 APPEARS to be amazing, like almost all other audis, just because of their LED lights. If you look closely (and/or listen to Jeremy Clarkson, you will see that the car is terribly misproportioned. And on the performance side, they use a DETUNED Lambo engine (not good enough to make their own) and all wheel drive, which sucks unless you plan on driving an R8 up a mountain any time soon. Audis suck, especially the Q7 which makes me throw up in my mouth every time I look at it.
@kareemy Since VW owns Audi and Lambo, well and Bentley and Bugatti and Porsche there is nothing wrong with them using a Lambo engine in their car, and as for detuning it, there has to be some differentiation between brands. One would argue that Lambo has been using Audi engines since VWAG bought them. As much as I enjoy Top Gear, Clarkson is a pompous idiot.. if anything effecting the handling of the car it was the lump behind the wheel :)
i find it ugly
If the Nissan GT-R (V-Spec) is Godzilla, then this thing is a Gundam Suit on steroids.
The debate about whether this car is worth it or is ridiculous, so is the comment about it being overpriced because it isn't. The entire car is a 10 year work made of the most complex carbon fiber weave ever seen by the public. It's engine is an ultra light tech marvel. The price is justified, you sure wouldn't disagree had it been shown to you with a prancing horse on the hood or a raging bull on the trunk lid. You are paying for the exclusivity and technology, and those are both expensive. Ever heard of the Veyron?
@Socr209905 The Veyron is still more advanced then this car and it is years old now. If this car was made by a different manufacture it would still have odd angles and not be my choice if I was buying a supercar, besides if I was spending that kind of dough for a car, I would like to actually own it.
veddy nice! saw it on tv yesterday.
The digital dashboard has to be the coolest looking thing in a car I have ever seen. That dashboard screen combined with the glass shattering abilities sell me on this car, if I could afford it.
@buzski Any car with the correct tuning could shatter a glass, I think the force of air out the exhaust of the veyron would take it out without the use of a resonator behind it. :)
