Steve Jobs' D8 interview: the video highlights (updated)
Sure, you read our liveblog of Steve Jobs' D8 conference -- and believe us, it's heavily quotable -- but don't you want to see and hear the Apple CEO claim HyperCard was huge in its day? Or perhaps you're more interested in his thoughts on Flash, market cap, and the iPad origins -- either way, videos are after the break, with presumably more to come from All Things D.

@ptimespub
I have. For 10 months a 3G was my primary phone. I got so pissed off with it I sold it for an htc desire.
Isn't it funny how Apple religiously supports an open standard and still gets flack for it anyway?
@jamiepgs
If you knew how the technologies work you would realize that HTML5 does not even have the potential to beat Flash in performance, stability or power efficiency. It's using older technology which lacks a lot of features which improves both performance and stability.
I explain it in more detail a few post up.
@Psilion yeah...riiiggggght. now STFU!
Can I just point out the irony of that entire interview being presented in Flash?
wow that's NOT like that idiot jobs at all is it?
Breaking news!
Steve jobs to talk about Steve jobs and Steve jobs company apple or something
at the Steve jobs convention in front of a giant picture of Steve jobs.
I really cant stand that guy at all, he has convinced the market he is selling something good, but it isn't, it reminds me of people who pay thousands of pounds for a piece of art, OK it maybe looks slightly pretty but its still a worthless useless piece of crap
@jaffreywali Welcome to the internet, did you just call me a loser for not liking apple.... and not even give a reason? :S
You really need to work on your replies
I comment because i have something to say
I really don't care if no one listens or it changes no ones mind
and i really don't care if people decide to waste there money on apple products, its there life
a life you are living apparently and it must be damn empty to go through 5 pages of comments to find something you disagree on then accuse me of being a loser
There is a place for people like you. Gizmodo
@painfull2006 Brilliant, everyone is wrong but you are right. You clearly can't understand that what is important to you isn't important to others. This suggestion that people are basically stupid and drop $600 on a device that doesn't do what they want insults my intelligence.
Get a grip.
@wilvo i never said anything about everyone else being wrong
important to me?
No one is forcing you to accept my opinion mate, this is the internet as i have said before.
You can "Drop" £600 on much better things, i AM saying that at least, the ipad is just a big smart phone that can't make phone calls, there are much better and more useful things to spend money on, like if you where to buy a piece of artwork for £600, that £600 could go to much much better use
Christ what is it with you fanboys, someone says something slightly bad about apple and you jump all over them, you need to chill
Peace & Love

I don't see any "peace or love"...and I'm sure "that guy" doesn't give a flying fuck what YOU think.
@Joao Cagao Christ, its painful listening to your freaks take offence to my opinion
One interview and ten different news on engadget... ROFL
Where is the full video?
@bvalentine I second this
@bvalentine I also want to see the full video. Engadget is probably saving it for another post :P. Would have been nice to watch on the train.
Can't see the videos on my iPad :(
gah anyone with the know how to rip these?
Yet another employee dies at Foxconn...
http://gizmodo.com/5553223/another-foxconn-employee-dies-after-working-34+hours-straight
So they get a 30% pay increase this chap works 34 hours straight, something very rotten going on here.
Steve Jobs outsources another death today over at Foxconn. - Another Foxconn Employee Dies, After Working 34-Hours Straight
@Xing OMFG, you realize Foxconn makes products for other tech companies than Apple. And BTW when I was 24, I worked for SNL at 30 Rock and ya know, I would go in on a Thursday morning and not leave the building until Sat night around 7:30 after the first rehearsal was finished. That would be 57.5 hours straight, and if I didn't like it, I had the option to quit. Get it?
Funny guy he is when he want's to
@jamiepgs
Who knows when it'll be ready for primetime. OLED screens are brighter and more efficient, but you don't see them in tvs yet. Tech never takes a step back to go forward. It sounds like you're reaching here.
Thanks for the vids. Interesting stuff, but yeah. He never really answers any questions (although the iAd Q/A is interesting enough - but Apple naive?). It was lot of circling around the question and 'magical' answers.
But I've done interviews and Q/A sessions with peeps, and let me tell you what I noticed.
1) He fidgets. Alot. Moves the chair, his head, arms. He could be nervous with the interviewers and the crowd. You don't see this nervousness when he's doing the dog and pony shows. He doesn't like answering these questions or being questioned at all.
2) His eye contact. He spends the majority of the time answering a question either staring at the floor or staring up at the ceiling. He does this at the start of answering. He's basically setting up the lie, line of bs, or some magical answer when he's doing this. Once he's secure in his line he'll feed you, is when he looks you in the eye. But its noticeable when his 'line' is interrupted or questioned, he stares back at the floor or ceiling.
3) Not answering questions very directly or dancing around them. All with the guises of 'core values' or 'not being rude'. It could be a PR flak thing, but Im not seeing it. He's trying to paint a different picture of himself and Apple. Like the part with the editorial cartoonist? He could've answered that question very directly, apologized for Apple's behavior, and said we're going to publish clear cut app store publishing rules. Then he places the blame on the cartoonist for the whole flap and claims that Apple doesn't play the liar blame game.
He's nothing but a snake oil salesman and consumers buy into it hand over fist.
I'm impressed with this man. I'm glad we got to see that his decisions are based on pure reasoning, this guy knows exactly what he's doing. I just don't agree that Apple is a company missing resources. That might have been true earlier but no in these days. That being said, it probably is still a good strategy to "choose horses." Myself, I'm all for kicking flash out the door.
I don't know why, but I'm not getting any sound from the videos. That's Flash for you.
@bluelobe I get the sound, but for some of the clips the sound is not in sync with the video. I don't know if the problem is Flash, or if the videos are just bad themselves.
@reallynotnick
On OS X flash video is definitely more processor intensive.. but in windows, I can play 720p flash videos with ease, but HTML5 video plays very laggy. Flash works flawlessly within windows (in my experience anyways).
when is the next apple press release? when do we find out when the new iphone is out?
It's pretty amazing that people see this interview and conclude things completely different from each other. For me, I see a guy who's frustrated with the bad press, believes it's unjustified and states his cases clearly, explaining decisions they've made, explaining them intelligently, calmly, and validly. I see a guy who isn't arrogant and understands that if Apple makes the wrong decision, people will not buy their products. I also see a guy who's proud of how he turned Apple around from the brink of bankruptcy. I came away from these clips feeling a lot better about Apple. I'm really looking forward to WWDC and OS 4.0.
Although I disagree with Jobs decision on axing flash from mobile products. I give him kudos for not removing Google search.. not because its Google but because it is the best search product out there and it would not be right for Apple users to be forced to use alternatives that they might not be to fond of.
@ddddd Try this and get back to me!
http://jilion.com/sublime/video
Oh the irony. I would love to watch and hear what Steve says, but my iPod touch won't let me. I think it has something to do with flash? (sarcasm)
With Flash, because anyone can develop on it, it's all about the quality of the developers. The idiot who made this video player without enabling smoothing/bilinear filtering doesn't help our cause.
Damm he seems mad.
@ddddd
Try Vimeo, it looks beautiful on an ipad and all videos are HTML5
so STFU
@ddddd And what did you watch it on? A vaporware tablet that you can't wait to hopefully buy one day? Or a smartphone? Which one is playing flash nicely for you? Say what you will about Apple, they only talk about ACTUAL products that you can purchase now, ones that are laying the foundation for their future development. Are they perfect, no? Is anything? Will flash be the dominant video format in 2 years? No.
So much ridiculous Apple hatred. Newsflash, if you hate them don't buy, read about, or comment on their products. Either way, you'll continue to enjoy the trickle down effect their technology has on the industry.
wow...this guy jobs might as well say his customers will buy anything he puts out..even if its crap..
@Engadget
What's with the anti-Apple comments being deleted?
@paulus
If they're being deleted, ... how would you even know about them...
Unless you posted them yourself.
I love that he has bashed flash so many times, yet we are all sitting here watching him in our flash players.
The music was so god damn loud and the speech was really quiet. How about using some volume equalization next time? Ok thank you, bye.
he's an engaging speaker, for sure, and knows when to kid around, but don't be fooled - watch how he ponders most of his statements before he looks up at the questioner to respond. Jobs is sharp as ever and for every interesting thing he is saying up there, he's thinking a million more that we won't be privy to until the finished products launch or go live. love Apple or hate them, this industry is at its best when Apple is at its best, pushing and debating and enraging and innovating.
@joeross Agreed. Their proprietary nature contributes to the overall market. Sears wouldn't get it's designs if it weren't for Prada and Gucci, and those clothes tend to be just the vision of the designer. The iPhone and iPad lead in touch technology today, even with a capacitive screen that uses 2 times the processing resources as Apple's 'they' can't come close to simulating the sensitivity, the accuracy or the responsiveness of Cupertino. So yes...when Apple's sharp, the rest of the industry follows suit, and honest-to-goodness we NEED someone like Apple - secretive, proprietary and setting the standard - to keep the bar as high as possible.
As much as Adobe might appreciate being the center of attention in the battle for tablet supremacy, the fact is that Flash is largely irrelevant. As a platform for multimedia content on the Web, Flash has definitely served a purpose and it's hard to argue with how ubiquitous Flash is on the Web. Just try to browse the Web without installing a Flash plugin and you will see just how much Web sites rely on the Adobe technology.
"Apple doesnt have the most resources in the world"
I know market capitalization doesnt represent their bank account but apples operating margins is astonishing for the type of business they operate!
he looks like a rat haha
but he is richer than us. thats the funny part.
“We try to look for these technical vectors that have a future and are headed up.”
Just like Firewire, DisplayPort, Micro/Mini DVI, Mini VGA, iPod Dock, Micro SIM, and most of the other bullshit, inferior, incompatible technologies you’ve supported over the years. The fact of the matter is all you want is to kill competition and have proprietary solutions that you can profit off even more, rather than doing what’s best for the consumer and better supporting USB 2.0, HDMI, Mini/Micro USB, and classic SIM.
Comparing HyperCard to Flash to dodge the question of why you’re not supporting Flash? Blaming Adobe and the iPad launch for the extremely vocal, negative consumer response toward your lack of Flash since the iPhone launched on day one? Wow. You’re really full of shit sometimes Steve, I swear.
The rest of the highlights were interesting though, minus him crying about the lost 4th Gen iPhone, lol.
