ARM, Samsung, IBM, Freescale, TI and more join to form Linaro, speed rollout of Linux-based devices
My, my -- what have we here? No, seriously, what is this hodgepodge of (rival) companies, and why have they suddenly decided to high five each other here at Computex? Frankly, we're still trying to piece it all together, but after sitting through a Linaro launch event in Taipei, we're beginning to get a better handle on the relationship that Samsung, ARM, IBM, Freescale, ST-Ericsson, Texas Instruments and the Linux Foundation have just made official. The outfits mentioned above are coming together to form the UK-based Linaro (a not-for-profit entity), which currently has 25 engineers but will see that figure shoot up to nearly a hundred around the world in the coming days. In short, the new firm -- which will have an annual budget in the "tens of millions of dollars" but below "$100 million" -- is seeking to "speed the rollout of Linux-based devices," with one of the key points being this: Linaro will "provide a stable and optimized base for distributions and developers by creating new releases of optimized tools, kernel and middleware software validated for a wide range of SoCs, every six months."
Read on for more... The whole effort seems to be aimed at getting Linux software builds and new smartphones together, faster, via middleware. There's no doubt that phones are aging faster now than ever before, and helping the two ends of the spectrum meet more quickly is obviously in the best interest of those parties involved here. But based on statements made by the Linux Foundation's representative here at the press briefing, Linaro will soon reach much further than the mobile space. He predicted that cars, refrigerators, cameras, camcorders and pretty much everything else (yes, including your future children) will "be connected," and when you think about having that sort of scale, there's a more obvious need to get a handle on device-software validation in order to speed efficiencies in development (not to mention better performance of various Linux software on a wide range of hardware).
Along the way, we learned that Linaro is "not meant to compete with Android and MeeGo, but to foster distribution," and the builds that are released each six months will be validated by each partner firm before being shot out into the wild. Speaking of which, the first major release is planned for this November, with "performance optimizations for SoCs based on the ARM Cortex-Ax family." We also got the feeling that this group was being formed in order to ensure a smooth transition from Linux dominating in the enterprise (air traffic control systems, stock markets, etc.) to an attempt to dominate in the consumer market. As TI's delegate stated at the event, one of the overriding goals here is to reduce the amount of investment needed by each company in order to make their individual hardware products play nice with various Linux builds -- pooling resources to create a nice slice of middleware obviously benefits each of these rival firms when it comes time to put rubber to road. It's hard to say what exactly the impact here will be on the consumer in the short term, but anything that delivers more Linux devices to more people definitely gets our hands in the air (like we just don't care).

actually if people knew that there we free versions for almost every software written for windows available on Linux and you dont have to look far to find them since ubuntu has an software store thingy They would leave windows in droves since they would save alot of money.
OS= free software=free updates=free no licenses for a pre built computer = cheaper at retail
@c w j He nailed it precisely. This pairing has nothing to do with the PC market and Linux expansion but rather the Mobile chipsets and devices having some standardization that Linux can adhere to finally. The PC market is basically standardized into an i386 platform by this point in time.

Looks like they want to nub fragmentation issues across all these devices, platforms in the butt, and they are going to do it by pooling resources so that instead of each company doing the same work, they do it once for everyone, they do it right, then they roll it out - as they said - every 6 months or so with releases. I guess to either help or run along-side releases on smartphones like the way Android is rolling out.

Hmmmm. I'm trying to get it:
For phones based on Android, you need a stable Linux kernel running on your device first with all the drivers working perfectly for your hardware (chip, lcd, speaker, keypad, etc, etc, etc.). Companies like Samsung Motorola and the rest have to work really hard to do that. With every new chip release by TI, FreeScale, ST Micro, Qualcomm this work has to be done again and again by all the companies who want to make the devices.
So these guys want to centralize this activity. Sounds good, but will be really difficult to pull off taking into account all the private IPs and the company secrets involved in these activities.

I think you have the right idea. It's about the level down from Android. The base Linux. This isn't about creating another layer on top of Linux, like Android or MeeGo are.

this would seem to benefit linux based appliances, used to work on embedded systems..mostly digital video recorders based on ARM SoCs..there was a time that I had to build toolchain from the ground up..messy..Linaro is a good start..yey!

I had always wondered what made Linux work. Now I know from the title picture. They use that big key to wind up the clockwork spring.
Actually, I like Linux. I just could not resist. I really only truly bash CrApple and they use Unix, not Linux.
If they are going to sort out the mess of hardware manyfacturers linux drivers (especially for embedded systems) then great.
It's not totally clear that this is what they will be doing, or if it will be possible.
Here's my theory for why they're doing it. They want to help make Linux a much more popular consumer product as you stated in the article, because if Linux is more popular, they can start making computers running it, without having to pay the licensing fees to Microsoft, meaning more profit for them.
Whether that's their reasoning or if they just truly want to help, I'm glad and am looking forward to how this goes.
And the onetime joke statement of Linux world domination continues to edge closer to reality...
ARM seems to be where Linux is experiencing the biggest growth, on mainly embedded systems. These companies pooling resources to make this experience better can only be good. I'm just thinking of how nice it is using the majority of Intel products, as they supply decent drivers with regular updates on most of their products. If this is a situation we can have for ARM devices from multiple companies, that's great.
Plus, anything that benefits the Pandora is a winner for me :)
