Huawei S7 runs 1GHz Snapdragon and Android 2.1 like a champ (video)
Another small mystery, solved. We caught a glimpse of Huawei's relatively undercover S7 tablet back in March, but little was known about what would actually power the device and what operating system would be pre-installed. Here at Computex, we learned the facts on both of those points. Sitting pretty at Qualcomm's booth, the S7 was shown boasting a 1GHz MSM8250 Snapdragon processor, and our hunting around in the settings confirmed that Android 2.1 was loaded onboard. The Qualcomm reps didn't have any other hard specifications available on the 7-incher (beyond those that we already knew), but we were able to spot a volume rocker, internal speaker, 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD card slot, USB connector and a fancy kickstand around back for sitting a spell and watching multimedia. During our time with the device, we instantly fell in love with the depressible side buttons, and the capacitive resistive touchscreen was as responsive as they come. The whole thing felt speedy and light enough for our liking, and frankly, it was easily one of our favorite tablets at the entire show. We're still no closer to nailing down a price or release date, but at least you now know it's worth your while to keep an eye out for both. Vid's after the break.

Huawei cell phones now operate on Mount Everest.
That's awesome.
do we really need another sasquatch phone ?

Service coverage*
@Bruce Willis You can just get a screen protector. I have one on my iPad. No big deal. Sure its an extra $20, but it'll keep the grubby fingerprints off the screen too.
@Bruce Willis
My iPhone 3GS and N1 look outdated day by day…
@GadgetFunkie But at least you have root, and you can enjoy it now. ;-)
@Student Driver
But look at the evolving form factors … the rate of innovation is making me tempted to throw my savings at 'em. The only problem is I don't have any, damn you student loan and yuck [sic] you recession
@Bruce Willis
Huawei?.... 1GHz Snapdragon??.... Android 2.1???.....
I did not know the entire world got pulled into the black-holes created by the arrival of the EVO 4Gs...
I know what I'm going to do if I get this. At least one time, just for the expression on people's faces.

@MbZbuGSy
if you're 7ft tall you might need a phone this size
@Bruce Willis Sleek style as well for the form factor. Could use a little matte though. http://j.mp/huaweis7-proto
@CaryHiroyuki Tagawa
And iPhone OS still can't play flash..
A USB connector! =O
Is google ever going to address the android \ tablet issue?
They really need to get things going -- it's going to suck having all these new tablets come out and each one has its own appstore and can't run normal resolution android apps...
@DoctarPeppar This one seems like it probably qualifies for the app store, since Darren mentioned in the video it had a GSM slot and could make calls. Obvious problem being that nobody wants this to be a phone, so you're wasting U/I space and maybe circuitry on something you don't need just to get the marketplace. Odd that Darren didn't mention it though.
@DoctarPeppar Indeed. I love Android, and would like my apps to carry over to my slate (whenever I get one). I would be OK with Chrome OS if it could also run Android apps (I doubt that would happen). I already run Linux and Windows, and with Android that's 3 different operating systems that I'm maintaining and buying apps for. I just don't want a fourth at this time.
@Fanfoot Actually, I'm more likely to get it because it has the sim slot. I could take the sim card out of my phone temporarily when I wanted to get easy internet access, or use it with a separate headset for a while. I wouldn't use it as my primary phone, but I could see wanting to do that sometimes (while at the airport, for instance).
Yawn... The 1GHz snapdragon is old news, every phone now has it. When is the Qualcomm 1.5Ghz dual-core coming out?
@Yankee
Agreed, but i'd rather see the Omap4 :)
A9 is gonna be SICK.
@Yankee I would also like to see the new CPU in a slate just like this. However, my Nexus One ran 2.1 just great and FroYo is even better. I have to wonder how the battery life would be with the newer, and faster, CPU. I would like to see a faster GPU if this thing has a higher resolution than my N1, as that could be a problem with games I play like Heavy Gunner 3D.
@Yankee
This is different from the ones found in phones.
I'm in love
BLANK...BLANK...BLANK....HTC EVO!!!!!!!
Since when is using a bluetooth headset "avoiding humiliation"? lol
@CAVEMAN61
uhh...do you really want to be that douche on the bus/train with this thing to your ear?
@CAVEMAN61 For a few years now; It is 2010 not 2000. I use my bluetooth headphones to make all my calls.
@Bruce Willis I dunno... some people look like real douches wearing BT headsets with bright flashing LEDs looking like Borg Drones. 'Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated.'
As usual, I really can't wait to have this device in my collection of gadgets. Hopeful someone will have a custom rom for it and that rom will be available on http://www.androidtechnical.info/romlib.html
@kluesman man, you spam that site on every post you make...
Come on. All these comments are electronic garbage anyways. Let the fella have some fun.
This bad boy looks very interesting. I like home screen and over theme they put on it. I wonder if the calling capabilities are there so it can be android market place compliant?
On another note whose Streak was that where is a video of it in action?
Another phone running 'Android Vista'. Where the hell is 2.2?!
Iv bein waiting for this beast since I heard iv found out it will be around 200 and will come out this summer!!!! Belive me iv bein following this thing since it came out I was thinking of getting the archos 7 cuz I was nt gonna wait for it but since cumputex I said fuck it I want this beast
I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Normal shmucks won't buy this. Why try? Ipad has gone too mainstream for this to get any spit light. Gonna take a miracle...maybe some magic? Boom!
Yea this thing can has the full android market from google and can run all the apps in the market not including any 2.2 apps if there is any but even if I wouldn't doubt if they upgraded it to 3.0(2.3) but after that they probably won't but still this is full blown android with it's own ui
@cocopuffs How do you know it's possible to access the marketplace with this? Does anybody maintain a list (ie google) of devices that are allowed access?
@dorbolo Actualy yes ex.archos 7 can't access the google market cuz. Cuz it doesn't have the fetures that they ask companies to be able to use the market (cam, buttons and accelomater ( sry for the spelling)) and google said to all companies not just archos that they need to have those thing cuz of the apps in the market and they don't want ppl to download an app and then they blame the company
Yet Another Android Phablet.
Although, I do like the kickstand.
Hey Darren, a comment on how much it weighed maybe? Given that's the main bitch (aside from Flash of course) with the iPad y'know?
@Fanfoot Its 500 grams or a lil more than a pound 1.10 to be precise lol
Anyone know the differences between the MSM and QSD varieties of Snapdragon processors? The android phones with snapdragon seem to all use the QSD version, but this uses the MSM.
@Flowah Good question, and I have no idea. I hope someone here does...
@FlowahQualcomm’s Snapdragon family of chipset solutions includes:
• First-generation products: QSD8x50™ with 1GHz enhanced core
• Second-generation products: MSM8x55™ and QSD8x50A™ with 1GHz enhanced core, including multimedia optimizations and 1.3GHz enhanced core, respectively
• Third-generation products: MSM8260, MSM8660 and QSD8672 with dual-CPU architecture featuring enhanced cores running at up to 1.2GHz and 1.5GHz, respectively
@cocopuffs
Huh. I don't see the MSM8250 on there, but I do see MSM8260.
Either way, it seems like the MSM versions, have more power than the versions found within smartphones.
I think anyone reflexively yawning at the Snapdragon here should keep that mind. The 1GHz clockspeed isn't everything. I think it's likely that it is a more powerful processor than in the N1 or the Incredible.
If only this had windows compact embedded seven.....
I still don't know how to pronounce this company
phonetics anyone??
@tylersmyler http://inogolo.com/pronunciation/Huawei HTH :)
@tylersmyler
HWA-WAY, not wah-way.
