Toshiba redesigns Satellite ultrathin laptops, we go hands-on
It's no secret that the Toshiba Mini NB305 is one of our favorite netbooks on the market, mostly because of its chiclet keyboard and wide touchpad. Thankfully for us, it looks like Toshiba is planning to spread the same design to its ultrathin Satellite lineup sometime soon. Shown above is what appears to be a minty fresh update to the Satellite M135 on the Computex show floor. The 13-inch laptop looked mighty attractive -- it's about an inch thick, and as mentioned has the same sturdy keyboard as the Mini NB305. We're not the biggest fans of the pattern etched into the metal palmrest, but on the plus side its touchpad has dedicated right and left buttons. We can't tell you much in the way of specs, but it was on display at the Intel booth with a Core i5-U520 processor and also hanging out at the AMD booth with one of those new Athlon II Neo CPUs. This thing is bound to be official sometime soon, but in the meantime check out the hands-on shots below and start saving up for what could be one of the best ultrathins headed to the market.

Looks ugly.
@DoctarPeppar
Can't beat Sony Vaio Z even by a long shot!
@DoctarPeppar I agree. It's really not appealing. I don't understand why manufacturers have to 'glam' up their products with all that etching/pattern rubbish. Keep it nice and simple. :)
@DoctarPeppar
If only there was a job where you could stand behind these designers, and every time they reach for the glossy paints, you could backhand them. Also, fake metal/carbon fibre/anything-else-remotely-shiny, would result in a similar response.
"But sir, I know nothing else!"
"No piano black, put it down!" *SMACK*
@jamehhhh What matters more than the thickness is the weight of the laptop! What is its weight? I hope it doesn't do a Dell Adamo with a 0.68" laptop that weighs 3.5 pounds. I heard the other day that Toshiba was releasing an i5 sub-1 Kilo system. If it does so by the end of the year, I may think of selling my Vaio Z i540 for that one! Weight does matter, even when it can't cut a piece of cake.
@Glitch
Yeah agreed, but real metal and real carbon fibre is pretty sick...brushed aluminum of course is also sweet like macs use. Glossy is so out -- it's just lame. No one wants a device full of fingerprints.
@krishansy
thats what i've been saying!
still havent seen a 13 inch laptop weighting 2lbs
@Glitch ha, win.
@Glitch I fell off my chair laughing. That was amazing.
Toshiba makes great laptops, but they`re just down right fugly. The lid and the keyboard being two colors is hideous, and what were they thinking with that shiny crap? Were the designers getting anally probed when they drew this?
@Glitch
Haha, nice- I can totally see one of my Art Center professors bitch slapping the fool who coordinates these ridiculous designs. I think Toshiba lost focus on their aesthetics somewhere back in 2005, and needs to drop their entire kitsch-obsessed design department.
looks way too busy for me. but some may like it.
@buoy
That's what she said.
It's Athlon Neo, not Althon Neo Engadget.
Sorry, but that's not ultra thin, see canoe lake.

@One Love
yeah. i almost puked knowing engadget thinks 1 inch is thin.
Ha I see the Tosh is still using glossy lids. Gloss is old hat, Matte Finishes are the new cool. Have fun with your fingerprints.
Oootherwise Mobile i5 is good to me
@216
Brushed aluminium all the way. Mine: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/04/asus-ul30vt-a1-pops-up-on-amazon-for-pre-order-silver-5600mah/
@216 My fingerprints add character. At least, that's what I keep telling myself. Augh who am I kidding? Toshiba, gloss is a lose. Please remember that before continuing in life. :)
Ugh. Chiclet.
Looks like a pre-school toy.
Looks very HP.
There's something about that particular shade of grey used for the keyboard that I find off-putting and unappealing.
STOP with the shiny plastic, it looks like crap bring back MATT
@fourthletter who is MATT and why do we want to bring him back?? .....oh you meant "matte"... yes I definitely agree with that.
Am I the only one who HATES chiclet keyboards?
@zoltan
Nope, I absolutely despise them. Long live ThinkPad keyboards!
@zoltan chiclet keyboards are great. i can't type on my non-cliclet desktop anymore after using my ASUS UL30A
I wonder where I could get a non-glossy plastic, 1in thick, 13in ultraportable that gets 5+ hours of battery life....... and has a backlit keyboard and multi-touch trackpad. Does anyone know if there's a company that makes said device? *tongue-in-cheek*
my ASUS UL30A-X5 looks way better than this.. not really feeling the design by Toshiba.
I don't like the buttons that they still have. I prefer the trackpads that Macs have. Is there a PC with that functionality?
